Title: stealing your kids door.
Post by: Anonymous on June 06, 2009, 01:57:41 AM
So I went to a parenting seminar (no probs with the kiddo just figured id get some pointers) & this woman talked about removing the bedroom door of your kid when they lie to you or sneak out etc. Apparently the idea is that privacy is a priviledge not a right. This seemed a little over the top & heavy handed to me. Has anyone heard of this odd practice? or indulged in it? or had it happen to them as a kid?

saw it on an episode of "world's strictest parents".

apparently because the boy did not do his chores correctly or lied about smoking a cigarette.

I think these kinds of punishments are common in the household where being controlling and overbaring is considered parenting.

Pretend the door is still there and masturbate.

It is fairly standard.  You remove the door and then slowly remove everything from the room including the bed until the kid starts to comply with the family rules.  It is really effective in most cases and benign in that it doesnt harm the kid.

I've heard of Amish boys removing the doors to their sisters' bedrooms so they could rape them more easily. Sounds real standard.

I dont think there was any intention of sexually assaulting the kid.  The parents are trying to gain control of their household.  Why would you view the situation as rape motivated?  I can see why you may view your program negatively.  You see motives which are not really there and misread why rules are put in place.  Interesting reply, though.

Im not saying that this is abuse but it is pretty hardcore dont you think? Sure kids need discipline but how can you possibly build trust or give kids a chance to earn back trust when they screw up if you take away everything they have?

A parent cant just have their kids running around doing what they want without regard to the rules.  This is usually a last step measure.  Agreed, It would be a little strange if this was the parents first reaction to everything, like forgetting to put out the trash or mow the grass.  But I believe this is done after a long stuggle.

Nah, just a piece of wood.  If they had taken away the kids phone it would be borderline abusive.

so if the aim is to get better behavior & the kid keeps fucking up so that you have to eventually take all their stuff it is obviously a method that is not very effective

It is a question of trust - if you have reason to believe that bad things are going on behind those closed doors - drug use, etc. - OR if the kid routinely locks the door and won't respond to a parent or come out, then it seems an obvious way to address the situation. Sort of like putting a kid's computer in the living room or other "public" spot if you are worried about their internet surfing...
