I have to do it. I'll probably be ridiculed, but if you can get your hands on any Greatful Dead bootlegs, then do it. Their studio recordings pretty much suck, but their live shows were something else entirely. Sounds stupid, but the shows I saw changed my life. Changed my life. And I think you can hear it better in bootlegs of their old shows. And go as far back as the mid 60's if you can find it.
I'm not a dirty hippy, I promise, I work in real estate so how much of a hippie can I be (unless you meet my dogs and see my house). Anyway, find that shit. It will probably make you happy. Row Jimmy was always a favorite.
I'll also suggest Beth Orton, amazing singer and writer. Old school though, always go old school.

You and me both, then. One day, I went out to find that a case full of cassette tapes appeared on my front lawn which included their set recorded at Madison, WI 2/15/73 and a few others. Oh sure, I had already heard plenty of Dead boots before during the time when I was being exposed to them by my (at the time) deadhead girlfriend and her older sister (whose collection of Dead boots was as extensive as i've ever layed eyes on). The Grateful Dead were a good band... but while we're talking about 60's psychedelic music, do check out Roky Erikson! (http://http://www.rokyerickson.net) The songs he wrote with the 13th Floor Elevators were just as (if not more) interesting as any song the Dead (or the Jefferson Airplane, for that matter) ever came up with....
But ANYWAY...I thought we were recommending music from THIS decade??

I'd suggest The White Stripes and The Hives, they are pretty accessable and first got big in the time frame we're talking about. I'd also include Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, The Mermen, Cracker, and Tool. That's just some stuff that comes to mind that is somewhat mainstream. Cake was pretty popular around that time, and The Eels did some cool stuff. That's pretty much from a rock genre perspective, I'm sure thyere's other folks on here that could point you toward some great music of other genres. Oh yeah......can't forget Macy Gray, her R&B stuff is awesome, particularly her first one, and Joss Stone is awesome , too, a twenty one year old white chick from England (what is it with them these days, singing American-style soul and R & B?) who sounds like Aretha Franklin.
Hell, there's plenty of good music of all genres and from all times, bt finding it can be really tough sometimes.
And I'll weigh in on the Dead thing while I'm here, they were phenomenal on some nights, lackadaisical on others, and downright awful on some. But the whole scene and experience of going to shows, or touring the country with them, was a really wonderful adventure. Recordings of the phenomenal nights can capture some of the magic, and are worth looking into. A show from Cornell University in Ithaca, NY, in early May 1977 is considered by many to be the "best" show The Grateful Derad ever performed.
I'd also throw in Lucinda Williams to the list, she's pretty fucking awesome, too, and I'm sure there's a ton of other stuff. It's basically a matter of what you like and what genres you are talking about.

Listening to the Dead sometimes requires the 3 D glasses. I used to keep mine in the fridge but I have not seen them for years.

You're absolutely right. I've been remiss. Death Cab for Cutie for one, Pinback, Spoon, to name a few, I could go on and on but I'm late for my dysfunctional family xmas eve. Everyone say a little prayer for me. Ta.

. The 90s was also all about britpop. Blur (oasis were waay overrated) Pulp for their hilarious lyrics if nothing else. Suede and Elastica.
From your part of the world i would put the breeders on the list. Also Nine inch nails and Tori Amos. In R&B definitely both The Fugees and Lauren Hill solo
