I hope it was the teacher doing the pushups. It reminds me of how Tom McCaffery, at a loss as to how to teach us algebra, engaged us in a seminar on the difference between 1 and 0 that lasted half the year. God, how I cursed Hyde during my first semester at college.

At Hyde, occasional abuse I received at the hands of classmates filled me with suffocated anger. The shame, agony, and fear of corporal punishment, which I regarded as unfair and cruel; the inculcation of a sense of failure and squalor that formed part of the method of instruction; and the awareness of being enveloped by a sense of malignant joy when physical or mental castigation fell upon another was my character education and preparation for life.

What was tragedy for one was a joke for another.

Yes and we proved that 0 /= 1 !!!! I actually learned some proof techniques in that class. When the students taught the class, which was often, it was far more disciplined and organized than the class in the video.

This is too funny! All dressed up and no where to go!!! Do students have to get suited up like this every day now? Somehow I remember it being more informal during my time... huh.
Filmmaker has a myspace page. Tried to check it out, but it has been deleted!? Considering that the video was added just 10 hours ago, makes me wonder...

Can i ask a few questions about the clips?
Why were the kids in green. Was it a sports day with their house colours? or some other hyde tradition?
In the Algebra clip who was the teacher? Was it the young woman?
Why was the kid doing pushups?
Why were kids wandering around? Sitting near the blackboard without a desk? Was it just kids goofing off because the teacher was not in the room?

PushUps: disciplinary measures... No teacher present... Perhaps someone more recent can explain the green...

It depends on what you are given prior to starting the proof. Give certain properties of both numbers and theorems it is actually possible to work up a convincing proof, good enough to convince a football coach and long enough to make Michelle Corea's eyes glaze over. I am sure it would never pass muster in an institute of higher learning. The thing I learned from the process was creativity in problem solving.
You should check out the clip taken in the girl dorm room, where the person on camera point out a "cum" stain on the curtain. Ah to be young!

Can't blame Michelle. The unit interval is pretty heavy-duty stuff for high school algebra. Did Tom study topology theory between games?

I am sure he did, but not in the mathematical sense. He was busy studying the inside of his eyelids quite a bit. He used to sleep in and our math class was first period. Tom would have taken a year to figure this out: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seven_Brid ... B6nigsberg (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seven_Bridges_of_K%C3%B6nigsberg)

Cell phones? Uh. When I was at Hyde (just a few years ago) cell phones weren't allowed, if I recall correctly. :-? ??
Ah well, perhaps on a family weekend, a cell could be borrowed for this purpose?? Heh, that'd be great.

No shit! What unbelievable gall! Never mind my astonishment, now that I think of it, it doesn't surprise me. What fucks.
Then how, pray tell, did Allyson Lupovich get away with filming the algebra class, or the scene in the sunken garden, or the girl's lacrosse game, etc.? I take it, from perusing a bit, that she attended Hyde-Bath, and perhaps only for a year, perhaps as "make-up" for some failed class or some similar situation at her regular high school (see clip at the bus stop where she is filming her former {not Hyde} classmates on route to school.)?
Some people obviously don't see fit to follow the "Hyde rules." Well... I could comment on Hyde itself not following its dictates, but I think everyone here pretty much knows my position on that topic, ha!

She definitely went to Bath. I went to Bath, too, though it seems before her. But I reckognize that classroom and even some of those kids. Crazy to watch.
Haha, yes, most if not all of Hyde's rules are (obviously) not followed. I know that as well as anyone. I just don't recall anyone at all actually having a cell phone, hence the payphones in the dorms and elsewhere on campus. Cameras, however, were fine, so I'm guessing Allyson probably filmed those with a camera or maybe even an actual camcorder. In a 2-4 or Disco Group/Seminar setting, however, a camera probably wouldn't be possible, so yeah, a hidden cell would be the only way... I really think some footage of 2-4 or a Discovery Group would genuinely be great though, so people could take an actual look at Hyde-life at its Hydiest, so to speak. I remember some pretty horrible Discovery Groups; they're kind of hard to forget. It's like group therapy, except, you know, with no liscensed therapist! And don't even get me started on 2-4... Seriously, the world should see.

I think Discovery Groups would be best. In my day they called them Seminars. But there might be some issues re. confidentiality, etc. Wouldn't want to traumatize anyone even more by having that shit exposed to the public, unless they were able to review the final product and be able to say yes or no to having it disclosed.
Another thought might be Dean's Area, with someone that wanted their story and Hyde's treatment of them aired. You're dealing with but few individuals in that case (per filming), and with the most vulnerable of said individuals being the one who wants it made public.

Print would be Gary Eskow. But I doubt this person is Gary, as Gary has his own history with Hyde and Joe Gauld, and posts under his own moniker (Gary Eskow).
This is someone else, I think TV, and I sure wish he/she would just register and take on an avatar as I am sure that info could be exchanged via PMs that people might be too reticent to put into postings...

Another installment from Allyson Lupovich, added a few days ago.
p.a show '07 Performing Arts Show @ Hyde
numerous clips from possibly same performance strung together, note the ever present banner with those five key words suspended above the stage, finale with the old fart leading the ensemble in "Boom boom boom boom..."

I was just litening to this http://wordforword.publicradio.org/ (http://wordforword.publicradio.org/)
Doug Seidman said "character is your destiny." He went on to say that in this age everyone has a camera and with youtube everyone is a movie maker. Everyone is a public figure. You can not hide from the truth of your character.

I haven't finished listening to this (53'), but I did get to the point you mention. There is no doubt in my mind that there has been some philosophical overlap. Whether Dov Seidman got it from the same place that Joe Gauld did, or whether he got it from Joe Gauld himself is as yet unclear.

A gentler, kinder, more principled mouse trap.

I have started a new thread to focus discussion on the handful of posts immediately preceding (starting with Guest bringing up the Dov Seidman interview).

******** UPDATE 6/28/2007: Filmmaker is updating video with some more "cult guru" shots in the opening scenes (currently just has David Gilcrease); there may also be some "guru quotes" in there. Consequently, version noted in links above is no longer available. I'll update the links when it's done. Y'all may well be surprised! Ha ha!
UPDATE 7/17/2007: New version. Links have been updated!!

Well, Hell's Bells!
Are you sure you want to equate "hurt feelings" with life-changing mind-fuckery? Anyway, I doubt very much that his feelings are terribly hurt. I rather think he is sucking it up and having his ego stroked and stoked... any publicity at all is good publicity, right? Haha!

XC Race, not including Hyde, but held at Hyde. Some nice shots of the long front lawn stretch; I can remember doing warmup stretches along the edges...
Brunswick creams the competition, as usual. This clip is by a kid at Brunswick who appears to film all their XC meets, both male and female. They are lucky to have such a great fan.
Brunswick 17 MTA 45 Morse 83 girls race with a special appearance at the end by Christian and Mikey.

I swear, they must have the same lame-ass furniture still kicking around that they had 30 years ago. Probably 40 years ago, ha haa! See this clip (http://http://wwf.fornits.com/viewtopic.php?p=282841#282841) for a starker view...
Hope these gals didn't get into trouble for this.

I knew now-senior Rachel Deadman, seen dancing, this video would probably have been taped after study hall and would not constitute an offense for a senior in good standing.

Glad to hear that (re. "would not constitute an offense").
But what, pray tell, constitutes "good standing," and who decides that? If you piss some people off just 'cuz you don't fit in particularly well with the social milieu there, do you run the risk of being judged in "bad standing" and having a "bad attitude," and hence restricted freedoms of expression?

Yeah, you do. If you're not fitting in, then you're not trying to fit in, and hence you can be held accountable. Sometimes the kid can't change who they are, and they stay on the shit list indefinitely, until they do change. Hell, Procida went on 2/4 just for refusing to be in Dean's Area, losing sleep and time to take on additional work for the Dean for no personal benefit, only the school's. They wanted him, and eventually he was forced to relent.

Mmm. And who assesses, and how is said assessment made, vis a vis the "trying" quotient? I can remember trying like hell to "fit in," failing miserably, and hence being on the shat-upon list with no way out. I just don't do well in a one-size-fits-all kind of world, and Hyde School is just not a place that has room in its dogma to consider the existence of such a beast. I can't imagine that I was alone in that predicament. Apparently not.
Interesting facet to Billy Procida's Hyde career: some kids are unfortunate enough to be "chosen;" it happened in my time too. Of course, I am just cynical enough to have the thought flit across my mind that perhaps Hyde's future designs on New York real estate might have had something to do with that in Billy's case, ha ha!
