So the other day I watched the french documentary. I had seen it before i knew anything about the industry & then forgot about it or the name of the programme it was looking at.
What really surprised me was that the guys who run WWASP are all profoundly undynamic and uncharismatic. I had initially imagined guys like Tony Robbins or Dr Phil or Bill Clinton. Lying smooth operators with a can do attitude and a charm that convinces people to do or believe anything. i figured that this was the only way people would believe that they were saving lives etc.
Instead Litchfield who is afterall the kingpin of this came across as beligerent and antisocial, Randal Hilton piggish and alarmingly stupid and Ken kay a kind of earnest but none too bright chap with a love of bad shirts.
Even allowing for the fact that the production company was French and there is no love lost between the French and America, these guys didnt exactly make it tough for them to protray them badly. only ken Kay came across as the kind of bloke that you would even wish to spend more than 3 minutes with and that is because he came across as harmless and dim.
So my question is What is the appeal? The whole point of being a cult leader is charisma. None of these guys seemed to have this. They all looked like rank amateurs. This seems to be in contrast to other programmes which have the appearance (even if it is appearance alone) of being quite professional. What do people think?

It's so weird that you brought this up, since I just watched the TB documentary last night for the first time. I totally agree with you about the lack of charisma. Lichfield seems totally bored and/or boring. I don't see how that guy could sell a life preserver to a drowning man, much less sell his programs to unsuspecting parents.
Ken Kay was a laugh. Until I saw the film, I had no idea he went from being a night watchman/security guard to president of WWASPS -- literally one job after the other.
One of the saddest moments had to be the girl -- already over 18 -- whose aunt tried to rescue her, to talk her into leaving with her. Then the programmies put daddy on the phone and he told her "my love is conditional. If you don't finish the program, I'll never speak to you again." It was also stunning that she didn't even know her so-called high school diploma would not be recognized in the U.S. (or even in Jamaica, for that matter).

Randall Hinton is a complete idiot, I would love to have a swing at that guy. I have actually spoken to Ken Kay. One night I got a little tipsy and gave his cell phone a ring to ask him if he liked torturing little kids? I caught him a little off guard, he was working on his car........he loves cars from the 50's. As far as Bob Lichfield goes, that's not the "real him" you see there in the movie. He was very overweight and under massive stress during that interview. He enjoys his money, and enjoys his power. He's having a good time in life.

I haven't seen the documentary-but I hope the girl has the fortitude to tell him to go screw himself-if a parent's love is conditional on a program, you don't need them anyway, especially if you have another family member to help you start your life after 18. Know what? At her wedding-or at the birth of his first grandchild, the SOB will come running around to tell her how much he wants to reconcile and be a family again. Screw him then, too-I did!

"I knew you could do it" and "you did it becuase of what I did".
Selfish ass self-interested parents need to go to hell and not take it out on their kids or use their kids for gratification. Ugh.
Funny how the very things programs accuse every child of, are the very things wrong with the programmies and the parents, isn't it?
-
What is the appeal? Seriously, I think it's just this simple. TOUGHLOVE is a hate group. All of these people are child abusers and they hang together on the tacit agreement to overlook any and all of each other's flaws and failings, just so long as all members in good standing get justification and support for their need to abuse their children.

The charisma in WWASP was all used for the seminar facilitators. Those guys, Randell and Ken Kay are just businessmen. They balance budgets and make sure their profits keep rolling in. The ones you have to watch out for are David Gilcrease and his goonies. They are an independent company from WWASP, but they do the brainwashing. The local staff just back up what Gilcrease says.

Does anyone know what did become of Amanda. That part of the film made me cry. Is she ok now?

They?re megalomaniacs, they think they?re doing something for the greater good, and they believe that they are right. It?s a mental illness.
They?re crazy!!! (http://http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Megalomania)

Your MOM should get over it.

That father's "love" isn't conditional. It's absent. It's a grotesque parody of parental love that makes me sick.
When you adopt a puppy, for god's sake, you are responsible for loving it until it dies---even if it turns out to be a dangerous biter and you have to put it down, you hold it at the vet's and pet it until the lights go out. If you can't give that dog unconditional love, you have no business being entrusted with a dog.
How much more are parents responsible for unconditionally loving our children? I don't ever want to even meet, much less socialize with, someone who's capable of ceasing to love their child--young or grown.
You love your child even if your child becomes a criminal, an axe murderer. You visit your kid in jail. You may not bail her out or make excuses for her, but you continue to love her because she's your kid---just like you continue to love the dog that turned out dangerous. You might not be able to protect her from the natural consequences of her actions, but she's yours and you keep loving--and visiting her--no matter what.
Does the 18 year old daughter have problems? Well, if she does, being raised by a man who's not fit to be entrusted with a dog just might have something to do with it.
What was her poor mother thinking when she hooked up with that souless bastard?

The sad fact is many adults love their dog more unconditionally than their own child. If the dog has 'problem' behaviors or becomes dangerous, it's not his fault -- he's just a dog. A child, on the other hand, will be blamed for not choosing to be a 'better person.' As if it's always a choice...

The3 guys who run wwasp are behind the scenes. They put Teen Help marketers in front selling their program. Unsuspecting.brainwashed parents are promoting the program.Seminar facilitators and program parents who staff seminars are perpetuating the "success" of the program.
A person nevers see/meets Licthfield. Kay comes in when PR is taking place. Slick marketing all the way through.
