Where is the ORS, GOA, LUMPKIN COUNTY CHILD PROTECTIVE SERVICES,DAHLONEGA POLICE DEPARTMENT OR LUMPKIN COUNTY SHERIFF'S DEPARTMENT(WHICHEVER TOOK THE 911 CALL IN THE FALL),
LOCAL NEWS,DAHLONEGA NUGGET, ER PROVIDERS, STAFF..??Do all these entities not have a duty under the law to report a crime against a child?
Not to mention, a moral obligation....Apparently, a young female student
was raped by another female student garnishing a 14 inch tree limb..The young girl was sodomized and her injuries were so extensive to her pelvis, that a pelvic exam could not be performed. 911 was called, she was transported by abulance,and the ER had a duty to inform the proper authorities of the incident..The police arrived at HLA and were not allowed in??Come on...No report was filed...no local news, no articles in the paper.. The injured young girl was removed from HLA, while the alleged perpetrator stayed another month at HLA...as violent as she was..no criminal charges..everything hidden under the carpet..An assembly was called, and Headmaster Charles Cates,informed everyone that the injured girl,
did it to herself...Nice guy...I imagine the parents were paid handsomely for that... Attempted murder- one student toward another,hazing, etc. was called a "pushing incident..Apparently, it was determined that the perpetrator in the attempted murder incident, did actually try to kill another boy, so the order was signed to ship him off to a psychiatric hospital.. The violent child had a
troubling history of violence and labeled dangerous...He was admitted to HLA, knowing his background..It is reported that the ED. CON. was
none other than BUCCEALLATO himself..."WE DO NOT
TAKE VIOLENT OR SEVERELY DISTURBED CHILDREN"...

The incidents you describe above are the reason behind some high-ranking management staff's recent resignations.
You basically covered, point by point, exactly the documents I read that were widely distributed to Ed Cons by HLA's former admissions director. He has documented very serious criminal offenses in those emails, which, if proven true, could land some people in jail and/or the poor house.
Some specific allegations in your statement above are nearly verbatim repeated from those emails.

Some have been bought/gifted into silence, some have been threatened, but most are protecting their revenue streams.
To admit that this is going on is a tacit admission that they knew about a lot of things yet continued to dutifully refer children there.
Keep in mind that, by far, the worst offender who has placed the most egregiously inappropriate kids there (like the kid who threatened openly to murder another kid and then acted upon the threat when he wasn't removed from the population) is none other than the owner.

The Ed. Cons., those that have sold their souls, will not say a word..It is easier to say that the people who bring this to attention are crazy.
These Ed. Cons. will protect their business, thus their so-called reputations...It is criminal to be aware of these activities and not report them...especially knowingly referring children to places such as HLA that are not licensed nor capapble to deal with violent children..There are a few that are agast, but they are not on the payroll, so to speak...

just recommended one of these schools that has been under investigation...I gavemy friend the
synopsis of the place recommended, she printed out horrific things about the school, not licensed, and took it in, to call her on it..THe
counselor did't say a word...no apology..She did say,"none of these places are very good"...The counselor never even checked the stats on the place...The counselor asked to keep the papers..
just amazing...totally negligent...Just as those Ed.Cons that unknowingly refer to HLA...Those that are aware of HLA's 'secrets' are worse..

Unfortunately, this is an all-too-familiar scenario.
I'll give you the short answer. The Ed Cons bear no legal responsibility for referring to abusive programs. The parents sign the contracts and the rule is "caveat emptor."
Bad advice is just that - bad advice. It happens all the time and it's up to us, as consumers, to make the final judgement about which goods or services we will purchase.
The problem is the uneducated, gullible consumer - the ones often referred to here as "sheep." The sheep combined with slick marketing schemes function to keep the demand curve of of these facilities perfectly inelastic.
That is, their price never changes relative to consumer demand. They need not lower price to induce consumption of their product because sheep are easily fleeced and there's plenty of them (i.e. demand consistently outstrips supply - which is why these places are springing up all over the place).

I am not one to typically defend what is written on this site, but this story is not fully true. This incident was reported to the police and there was a full police investigation. Reports that they were not let in are not accurate.
In this incident there were two very disturbed young ladies involved. The victim did not do all of it to herself, but did ask the other girl to do it to her so that she could claim that she was raped and get pulled from the school. The perpertrator was kept at the school for another month, but was not allowed to be around the other students. HLA went to great lengths to find an appropriate placement for her instead of just dumping her back onto her family, who was in no way able to care for her at the time. The family was actually very appreciative of this.
Should these girls have even been at HLA in the first place? No. Were they removed when that fact was made evident? Yes.

Not only was there not a full investigation, no police report was ever filed. If you contend there was, by all means post it. People who are intimately involved in this case have confirmed that there was never a police report, and niether girl was interviewed by investigators.
There is no public record of it (no case number), and I challenge you to show that there is.
I'm not sure who you are, but you are obviously not at the level at which you'd have a clear perspective of this incident or you are intentionally misleading about the facts.

That's precisely what I'm saying. There is no public record and no police report.
There have been inquiries into this matter by attorneys and private investigators and there is no police report, nor was any investigation undertaken.
You're local. Take a quick drive down to the PD on your lunch break and request the reports. You won't find any.
Get back to me with your findings or post them.
Clarke Poole resigned over this and other issues surrounding HLA's unethical behavior. He's just one example.

Clarke is who I assumed was the staff in question. Clarke was not a top management person, but I agree that he resigned for the reasons mentioned. I cannot explain why there is no police report, other than the fact that no charges were filed to my knowledge. I do konw for a fact that there were detectives at HLA investigating this incident. Actually, they were the first ones to suggest that this was staged by the girls.

Director of Admissions is not exactly a clerical position, so let's be fair - he was at the top of his department.
Anyway, like I said, there is no police report (which would be in evidence even if no charges were filed) and there would also be (even if no charges were filed) a document stating that the incident was "closed by investigation."
There's none of that.

I won't argue with that, but I feel very strongly that the need for real understanding of how things like this happen, by far and away, outweighs the need to place blame and get retribution.
I know just exactly how a whole group of people, from top staff right down to the lowliest misbehaving newcomer, can come to accept the most outrageous, shocking, inhuman kinds of behavior w/o question. I know this because I've done it, helped induce this sort of hypnotic state in others and seen it done to so many others. It's SOP where I spent my 16th and 17th years on this planet. Never saw anyone raped w/ a branch, but I took part in driving a boy into a catatonic state. And when I realized it, close on the heels of that horrifying reality was the complimentary and ever present truth that, given my position, there was not a god damned thing that I could have done to help. Staffers could have, should have. And I honestly can't condone or forgive their inaction. But the rest of us, we could have bought ourselves a little dose of the same, but it wouldn't have helped. If anything, it would have further cemented the perception that we had all better fucking damned well keep mum and go along OR ELSE!
Lunacy en mass, is what we're dealing with. And, believe me when I tell you that the people making and enforcing juvenile justice, education, law enforcement, legislative and economic policy in this country today fully condone and approve of it.
They are dangerously unbalanced people, maniacal sadists of the TOUGHLOVE stripe. And now that you know, I'm not sorry for you. Misery loves company, that's true enough. But not nearly so much as relief from misery! So now that you have an inkling, a clue as to what's going on, the onus is on you, all of you, to speak up. Take a little risk, damn it! What have you got to lose, really? Is it that valuable? Weighed against the well being of your very soul and the future we bequeath to the next generation?
Now, all that said, this should go without saying but I dare not leave it at that. I tend to believe the story because, unbelievable as it may seem to outlanders, I understand the circumstances under which such things can and do happen. And I have enough info to stongly suspect that those circumstances exist at HLA. That's not the same as saying I KNOW it happened, though. Factually, I do not. And I wouldn't put it past these fuckers to plant and spread a false, sensational and easily refuted story just such as this in order to protect their real secrets.
Time will tell, or maybe not. If I were that girl or her mother, I'd have to think long and hard about whether or not to expose her to the rigors and stresses of the criminal justice system after all she's been through.

I cannot see what is so crazy that Eudora wrote.
Reality is often stranger than fiction. One of the threads here had a bit about how evil is much more innocuous in reality than on television, that's for sure.
These places like HLA are wrecking lives in many cases. yes, some kids may do better, but many do not.
Semblers and Bush and Co. all believe in simple answers with good poater names to put behind themselves when they "speak". Like "helping america's youth" "saving youth from drugs" etc. etc. It is correctly called propaganda.
Simple answers often do not work. There are very real problems with the youth of today as there have been in the past. I think it is pretty bad today, but locking up kids, denying them voice to their families, holding them on the ground by standing on their backs, sniffing goose crap, constantly waving threats of "restrictions" and on and on, does not work. Counselors need to counsel, not act as spies for the goons. That means they should consider the child's needs before anyone else's, including who they work for. That's tough, but it is moral.

"Tax Deductions
Monthly tuition payments may be tax deductible. As a parent of a disabled child, you are entitled to deduct as medical expenses the cost of tuition and room costs for a residential school."
So, now kids that attend an "academics only boarding school" are considered "disabled" and parents can deduct medical expenses?
This is fraud, plain and simple. It's either fraudulent advertising/licensing ("academics only") or tax fraud ("disabled child").
Pick one.
I just cannot fathom why the great State of Georgia allows this kind of duplicity. How does HLA get it "both ways" from the state, ORS and SACS-CASI...?

They tell so many lies that they can't even keep them straight.

To the editor:
Since I cannot afford $600 advertisements, as a citizen I have only three options: do my homework, speak my mind at public meetings and write letters to my local paper. Reading The Nugget this week reminded me of a few more questions, and I would like to challenge a few assertions I have heard.
The children at Mountain Brook will be just like Lumpkin County Kids.
No one discounts the need for young people in trouble to get help. However, the implication that attendees at Hidden Lake and Ridge Creek are just like Lumpkin County kids is at odds with fact. True enough, we have some kids who are in need of help, but they would never be able to afford Hidden Lake. The average Lumpkin County parents (a taxpayer) would have to sell everything they own to send their child there. This is not a school for the middle class or economically deprived.
I was happy to hear that there will be no guard towers or barbed wire. But why are the dorm "windows" fake? Why is this new group subject to being physically detained unlike current students? Without a court order, what is the legal basis of doing so with a juvenile beyond the age of 16? Simply read the current application form and you will quickly discover the major differences with our local student population.
This will bring in millions of dollars to the county and spur growth.
I agree that this will bring large sums of money to the county ... at least temporarily. Consider a few figures. The attendance at Hidden Lake is approximately 150 juveniles. The monthly tuition is about $5,400 ... about $810,000 a month.
Ridge Creek looks something like this. The program is 26 days long with about eight students in 24 groups a year. Tuition is $11,310. The minimum gross intake each year would appear to be $2,171,520. Add that to Hidden Lake and the annual gross appears to be almost $10 million!
The Mountain Brook facility will be even more expensive if my hearing was right ... $15,000 per month for a year. Please correct me if I am wrong. If I'm not, the annual cost to attend Mountain Brook is $180,000!! Will people who come visit their kids in these programs really spend time and money in Dahlonega shops?
By the way, do you really think growth is going to stop at the Dawson County line? All that speed bump does is give us a chance to plan this community better so that it looks more like a Peachtree City than an Alpharetta.
Conclusion.
If I could afford one of those $600 ads it would go something like this. A year at Harvard University ... $41,675. Four years at the University of Georgia ... $41,112. A year at Hidden Lake Academy ... $64,800. Perspective on a $71,000 tax break for Hidden Lake ... priceless.

Some have been bought/gifted into silence, some have been threatened, but most are protecting their revenue streams.
To admit that this is going on is a tacit admission that they knew about a lot of things yet continued to dutifully refer children there.
Keep in mind that, by far, the worst offender who has placed the most egregiously inappropriate kids there (like the kid who threatened openly to murder another kid and then acted upon the threat when he wasn't removed from the population) is none other than the owner.
A sage observation in light of the new evidence in the lawsuit.
