Not a bad idea, DF.  I think maybe a candlelight vigil with the names of many of the deceased victims read and a moment of silence for each.  If it is done with dignity and composure, this could be a good opportunity to help in our own healing and to memorialize those victims who no longer number among the living.

I tend to agree, save the party for afterwards, a memorial service ain't the place for drunken revelry (unless it's Miller Newton's funeral).

If you're serious keep us posted on what date you're looking at this fall.  I've often thought about driving down south again simply to drive by that place.

More "appropriate" for there not to be hooch at a funeral-like event?? ::cheers::

Hey DF I would be intrested even though I was held captive in the "Atlanta" concentration camp. My old druggie girlfriend was sent there as well and when she got out she was killed in a car wreck. She got out and used drugs harder than she did before she went in...(Was making up for lost time or tried to mask the pain). She was in for about 9 months and her parents wised up and withdrew her. I was there much longer.

It was a sad thing that both of us being like we were before straight and during the time we were there we were not allowed to look at each other not to mention even talk to each other. After our time in straight we did not talk or associate. I was told about a month after her funeral she had died by one of our mutual friends.

So yes I would make the time and arrangements to go to a candlelight vigil for the fallen as well as the ones who may never heal emotionally from the hell we endured.

Count me in...if not in body then in spirit!

Maybe we can have multiple ceremonies simultainously (sp). This way the travel distance/time is reduced...perhaps more people would be inclined to attend. Also, it would be umm program specific...that is it would be more (I think) powerfull experience to attend a ceremony at the Morgan Yacht building or any of the 3 buildings I was in...as oppossed to going to Atlanta or other locations. If they were all held at the same time, there maybe an increased chance of media exposure because of the enormity  and georgraphical spread of the abuse.

Unfortunately, my direct experience with these gatherings has shown that few people actually show up. Perhaps with adequate planning and a clear sense of purpose...not to mention a minimalization of back biting and shit slinging...a very powerfull event could be held and most probably would be good for us all. As well I think it would give us all a good reason to tip back a few, maybe burn a few...ease a few of the tensions...heal a few of the wounds.

I was thinking of some sort of collective eulogy (sp) that somehow embraces all of our experience, in relation to Straight Inc. Have that sent to media and have it read at each event simultaniously, then each location read the list of people who did not survive from that location...make any sense?

Anyways, just brainstorming along to what I think is a great idea ya had there D-Fly!

Get over this, LIFE being called Str8 LITE, your persecution complex and your paranoia.  Or at least take it to your own fucking site.  Oh, that's right.  You don't have one.  You just like to bitch about this one and try and control what people say.  Try deprogramming yourself as you're obviously still stuck there.

I might cruise in for the afterparty. Can I bring a big friendly dog?

Whenever we read the obscene stories, the voluptuous debaucheries, the cruel and tortuous executions, the unrelenting vindictiveness with which more than half the Bible is filled, it would be more consistent that we call it the word of a demon than the word of God. It is a history of wickedness that has served to corrupt and brutalize mankind.

Hey - haven't been on here in a long time.  I guess the spam and bull shit kind of turned me off.  Working for an ISP - I HATE spam.  Besides, it doesn't really seem like too many people on here are real serious about anything.  So I don't really check this place out too much.

Anyway - the reunion in Nov.  I'm all in - told you that before & I was serious.

However, if you know of anyone that says that they will not go because former staff will be there, let me know & I won't go.   I'm not trying to cause pain or hardship for anyone.

Hope all is going well for you - hope your staying dry!!

Yeah. I think survivor's guilt is about half of what keeps me piqued here. If I had it to do over again, I might have raised a whole lot more hell.

As usual Woof, I like your ideas.  I think the idea about simultaneous ceremonies at the different $tr8 warehouses is great.  I think it would be very powerful if we could get the press to report that there were all these $tr8 survivors conducting this ceremony simultaneously to honor the memories of those who did not survive.  I think there is an opportunity for the Cincy survivors to contact Eve Mueller, who covered the Columbus protest just this past spring and get her to come out to cover the ceremony.  She is already very interested in our story and if the Cincy survivors could tie this ceremony in with KHK, it would help to keep the heat on them.

Even if we just held simultaneous traditional street protests outside of each building and got media coverage, that would be very powerful.  Imagine a protest at Family Pathways in Detroit being conducted at the same time as a protest in Cincy against KHK, which would be held at the same time as protests in Florida, Springfield Va, Dallas TX, Stoughton, Mass, etc...

...and then maybe we could all meet in the middle...where would that be... ::hatter::

Once you have this off the ground for real, maybe invite the Riddler to apologize. Document that you have invited him. Contact the press and let them know the story. People in the area are going to have to network to find the right press and journalist/reporter.

Another thing... To get more than three people to events like this, you will have to reach more than just the survivors who come to the boards. People will have to start individually tracking down people they know from Straight. Someone should starting a mailing list, or a list-serve.

it isn't that easy.  I sent out over 200 emails to survivors for one event and only about 15 showed up.   Very discouraging.

One thing I am grieving is the loss of trust towards family as when I was sent they really had families in my area believing that the kids were going to die if they didn't get them help, and they had the people and place that could do it.

Even after I got out I had little or no trust in family and as the result of 20 years plus later I live over 700 miles from my immediate family and talk to them less than once a month.

I have tried to forgive and reintegrate myself back into the family fold, however the abuse I endured while in Straight cut to the core of my existence.

I miss my family, however the trust thing still keeps me distant.

Straight hurt families, they did not help.

Yeah, that's the thing.  I've spent many years trying to communicate with my folks but it seems that they have been brainwashed and can't hear me anymore. I have a very hard time with them.  When I am with them everything is uncomfortable and strained and repressed.  Their presence depresses me.  I don't really even like them, personally.

Part of this service needs to mark our process of regaining the integrity that was taken from us.

That is also a loss of life I want to honor and acknowledge and move on from and call attention to.

To strip us of our integrity and replace it with institutional personalities and leave us blaming ourselves, that is a death I want to mark and honor and come back from.

And to acknowledge my own turning of the wheel, and the harm I caused.

And to acknowledge the years of confusion realizing I had been brainwashed and harmed and blamed. I want to celebrtate our efforts in coming back from this experience.

Maybe we could have pictures of as many victims as possible and a list of names, as many as possible.

I remember that address.

I guess like maybe the thing to do would be to let the people who want to get invovlved in this memorial just get themselves together in each locality, seperately and independently from  other localities and if it turns out that we have more than one locality that wants to participate, which I personally think would be fuckin' great, then we could coordinate the timing from there.  You know, like DOC could get his clan together and some survivors or maybe even just sympathetic civillians who knew the deceased or the imprisoned could write their memorial words and bring pictures and such, and we could get our clan together and do likewise, the Dallas kids or the Cincy kids, if they wanted or whatever could get their clans together and then we could hammer out the date.  I am starting to see more potential here than I did.  I think we need to have a real clear idea of what it is we want to achieve.  Perhaps a discussion about that is in order.

This is gonna take some thought and some coordination and some real effort.

I think we should be careful how we word ourselves to the public.  Words are powerful.

I would love to see multiple memorials happening simultaneously.  Cincy, You have an opportunity to really put the heat on KHK, cause you already have Eve Muellers' attention.  I have her card right here. She was the reporter who Covered our KHK protest at the Ohio state house several months ago.

I will be thinkin' on this...

...memorial service.

...We need to gather people who are willing to work.  Such as a person in each locality who will gather writers of memorial words and collect copies of those words by a certain deadline, at least a month before the event so we can all read the words and make sure that we have worded ourselves well and appropriately to the occaision.  And we may need someone or several people in the different places to deal with and generate media interest somehow and get permission to use the sites.  So we need a few good folks who have some energy to give.  We need people who can represent.

Dig.

Me? I'm thinking lately about the fallen and walking wounded who have been scathed by the broader, less obvious manifestations of the Program.

I'm talking about a kid who was like a son to me who came to me in times of need and in times of celebration. But I dropped the ball, didn't pay enough attention at a time when he was out of other resources. Now he's gone.

And I vow to never, ever make the same mistake again.

If we believe absurdities, we shall commit atrocities.

I went to 5515 Backlick & spoke with both the Sales Mgr & Branch Mgr (Ferguson has many locations across the country).  Anywho - they both said that it would be fine for us to have a memorial/vigil/whatever to remember those we've lost and those of us still surviving.  The only thing they were worried about was that we do it when their business is closed, which I don't think will be an issue since they close at 5pm M-F & 3pm on Sat.

I have to say it was rather strange walking into that place.  While the showroom (front office/lobby) looks totally different, I was still able to see the way that it use to be; where the front desk was, where the runner use to sit, where the 2 conference rooms use to be, the hallway into the carpet room.  I know in my mind that the smell has changed, but I could still catch whiffs of the way it use to smell.  They didn't want to let me walk behind the showroom (I wanted to see the hallway to the intake rooms, or where the messine? (sp?) use to be; morbid curiosity I guess).  I guess it would have been a liability or something.

It was strange pulling into the parking lot; the wall for the carpet room now has windows.  There is a driveway to the back of the building next to the loading dock where the pond use to be.  I could barely see the back parking lot from all the trees in the way.  It looks like it's now a grass covered field, though I couldn't really be sure.  Hardees is now a McD's.  The Shell is still next door, and the other gas station is still across the street.  I don't know why I thought that perhaps it would have changed more.  Perhaps wishful thinking.

I can't remember the last time my heart was pounding so hard.  I think it was probably the 1st time I drove on a race track wondering if I was going to have the time of my life or die.

I mean I think it's a great idea an' all but I am not in a big hurry to do it.  It's more important that it be done right by each of us in their own way.  I am still thinking about this...

Maybe if we didn't invite the press but instead filmed it ourselves and then put the footage on a memorial service website ??  See what I'm gettin' at  ??

Ok here it is (am not suprised).  Staightlings decide to organize have an event or protest or shindig, or whatever.  Then they find out "oh, no, this might take some effort, or work" and then they back down and say, no, lets make a video so we don't have to actually organize anything.  Yeah, yeah, let's be lazyasses.

Doubt anything will actuallyget done.  go figure.

I don't really think that I've seen anyone say that they weren't going to do this?  I think what people are trying to say is now that several people have agreed and said that they would come, it's time to figure out the best way to do it.  I believe that Pirate even said that he want's to do it?!  I'm sure that Dragonfly, who started this whole thing is all for it, I know that I will definately be there.  I think the larger questions - and please feel free to add your input here - is how do we get in touch with more people to tell them about this?  Until a few months ago, I hadn't talked to anyone from straight in about 10 yrs.  I think I may know where 1 or 2 people are, but that's it and 1 of them someone on this board has already been in touch with recently.  So, since you are in such doubt that we will be there, tell us, will you?  Do you know how to get  in touch with anyone?  Can you help?

i think this is a cool idea......i'm from this area and i mean right close.....i only lived 10-15 minutes from the building.....the only thing i might add to the idea, but its up to you,is that i'll get permission for us to carry it out w/o the fairfax police bothering us! these cops are all over the place...the last i heard about enough cop cars to cover many many blocks of the county....! 2 cop cars a block......i don't think it would do any of us any good to be exploited as a bunch of buffoons to the papers......fucked up after all these years.....not only that,a lot of us might be holding also.....i know i might for this occasion! shit kristin stottlemeyer and i graduated together...we were the only ones to do so that night.......i remember steve mathews......i was 7 stepped but i still saw him in group when i came in...bill burns was a good friend of mine too........the building is private property....owned by a lighting and interior bussiness.....all i have to do is go in and ask them if its cool for us to carry out the ceremony.....i don't see why they won't let us do it......we won't be harming thier property.....i don't know....ol' billy clinton passed that law "1,2,3 strikes and you're out"....i have like 5 strike right now...that was before the law was made, but i'm sure the way crap is now,i'd go away rather quickly in the night with a christmas tree car taking me to jail.....lol.....no shit......just let me know....for those of you that were wondering where ive been,i'm sorry,i just had to "clear" my head a little and settle down some.......well,thats my observation.....cool idea, but i think it needs a safer approach so none of us make NEWTON look good, thats all.....hippie

Yeah, couldn't be that people have lives.  Coiuldn't be that peopel are busy raising kids, helping out w/ grandkids, running a business etc.  Couldn't be that for some of us it's just not our kind of thing.

And it couldn't possibly be that some people have no desire to run into people like you.  Nah, couldn't be any of those things.

We should hire a psychic, preferably a recent immigrant who doesn't speak the language and never heard of Straight. See, then they could go in the Ferguson's and enter a trance state and clear up any historical disputes. Then they can take care of all the ghosts and send them back where they belong. Then I predict Ferguson's will notice a significant difference in their input/output/margin. This will make The National Enquirer and also probably The Economist, which is great news for survivors anywhere. I personally am conducting an internet search for a reliable psychic, wgbtu.

It used to be hardees, and "phasers" were honored to be able to have permission from staff to go buy french fries for them.  I wondered who would show up for an event like that? i wondered if i would? i wondered where everyone was?  I wondered where matt pissed on the building? Lastly, i wonderd how many incidents fergusson plumbing has had to deal with because of the building's former occupant and if they got a discounted lease rate for that?

There are a few things I've been wonderin'...

Is the media gonna be invited too, or what is the situation with that ??  Whether or not the media is invited or otherwise covers the story, I think we should document it on video ourselves.  Who is capable of doing a good job of that ?? maybe a still photographer too.  I gotta photographer buddy who might be interested in covering the event.  He aint a survivor, but he's a good friend and a pro.  I'll talk to him.

I don't see why we need to talk to the fuzz about any of this, but I think it might be a good idea to get the permission to use Fergusons' space in writing, or something, as someone suggested earlier, just in case the heat does show and tries to break all their fuzz-jive down on us.  At least we would have something in writing to show them.  I really don't want the cops there, or for them to even know about this at all.

Are any of the other programs gonna take part, besides Springfield ?? FLA survivors ??  Doc ?? Dallas kids ?? Combat zone punks(Boston) ?? etc.  'Cause right now we are preparin' to send out the invite and I'm kinda thinkin' if we're gonna do the multiple sites/simultaneous service thing then the invitations themselves should be program specific and we Springfield survivors shouldn't be sending out our invitations to St.Pete survivors, only to Springfield or survivors of other programs who are not having a local service of their own, that is unless we're just gonna have the one lone ceremony in Springfield for all survivors nationwide.  See what I'm tryin' to get at here ??  We don't want a St. Pete or Boston or Atlanta or whatever survivor to get caught holdin non-refundable airline tickets to Dulles Airport because he made his travel arrangements a day after he recieved our invitation, if theres gonna be a more local memorial service specifically for his program.  I don't know, doesn't that make sense ??  So if you're plannin' your own, program specific memorial service, down there in St.Pete or Atlanta or up in Boston or Detroit speak up now and let us know so we don't send invitations that are just gonna create trouble for people.  Or how should we handle this ??  'Cause otherwise the invitation is chompin to get out the gate.  Actually this is  pr'oly all too complicated and we will just have ta send out the invitation we have to ever'one and hope for the best.

Where can we have the after party(wake) ??  Who in the Springfield area is willing to host out of town survivors ??

This is happening.  The invitation is finalized and ready to go out to several hundred people.  We need people to verify death records so we can be sure we have accurate information.  We don't want to read someones' name off the list of the dead and then find them standing in our midst.  Dig ??  Anyone who can provide verification of a death or suicide please do so and send it to Dragonfly or myself.  I am particularly thinking of Dale Neville and Greg Northrup who were not on any of the lists.  We also don't want to leave anyone off the list who should be on it.  How and where can we find accurate information ??  Who will help ??  For example: I've heard that Ir* Kauffman commmitted suicide after $tr8, but have never seen any proof, only a rumor.

What other questions need to be addressed ??  What else do we need to consider ??

Sorry...I just thought I'd better ask...

Yes, plans are underway for a simultaneous memorial service in St. Petersburg.  The current occupier of the building that housed Straight is not willing to let their property be used for a memorial service, so an alternate site is being selected, we are in the process of finding out if permits will be needed, and if so, securing one.

The date and time of the St. Petersburg memorial service will be the same as the service in Virginia, the location will be announced sometime this week.  Thank you for asking, tis is a good opportunity to clear that up, and , like you said, it would really be unfortunate if someone were to buy non-refundable tickets and then find out that there is going to be a memorial closer to the location they attended.  This service is not limited to those who endured the St. Petersburg Straight, all survivors of any branch of Straight, Inc. are welcome, particularly survivors of other Florida Straight programs in Sarasota and Orlando.

Thanks again for bringing this up, now is as good a time as any to announce that a memorial will be held in St. Petersburg on the same date and at the same time.  The location should be confirmed this week.

well, I would somehow like something documented...

But when I try to imagine being there and hearing someone's father talking about how his was after Straight Incorporated, how he struggled and finally killed himself, how his family has grieved ever since...

When I put myself in that man's shoes I don't want any cameras or video tape or reporters..

But maybe it won't be that kind of service, I don't know what people need or want for this event, so I can't really see how appropriate it would be to record. Maybe we play it by ear, I have an idea for the schedule, but who knows what could really happen.

I understand.  I still think there should be some documentation.  Maybe filming the whole thing wouldn't be appropriate.  Maybe there could be a part of the ceremony, maybe right in the middle when we could turn off the camera so people will feel comfortable speaking of their personal loss.

We do not intend to invite the media to the St. Petersburg memorial service, other than announcing the memorial in the calendar of events sections of local newspapers, and possibly on public radio.  Again, we would like to stress that all survivors of all branches of Straight, Inc. are welcome, this is not limited to St. Petersburg survivors.

The location of the St. Petersburg memorial service will be announced in the next few days,  we sincerely hope that all who wish to attend will do so.

Well, I am envisioning a memorial service at the VA warehouse on Backlick Rd.

It will be this fall, and I am inviting the press and anyone else interested.

We are still in the brainstorming phase if you have any ideas.

My idea is to perform a ceremony for our own personal healing and to call attention to the fact that we ARE healing from a very real and ongoing disaster.

Right, I get the "confront your fears" and "put it all behind you" pop-psych type reasoning...and no offense, but I say TO HELL WITH IT! If this is supposed to be a memorial then let it be a memorial and not some nightmare trip down memory lane.....having this at 5515 would be analogous to some Jewish people having a memorial service at Dachau!

Burke Lake Park (for instance) sounds infinitely better than doing this thing near THE BUILDING...

I think Jewish people do have memorial services at Dachau.  Anyway I like the idea of havin' the service at Burke Lake.  That's one 'a' my ol' druggie hang-outs and the place I was tryin' to run to when I bolted from my oldcomer on my first day.  Maybe we should move the service to Burke Lake.  That would remove the uncertainty of gathering on private property altogether.  How late does the park stay open ??  Maybe someone in Fairfax Co. could look into it....would we need a permit ?? etc.

Yeah, thanks Frank...I like the sound of the park much better than the building...

Post by: Anonymous on September 02, 2006, 10:31:04 AM
Phasers also went to schools, churches, shopping centers, and other events, as well as "permissions" to the lake.  Although I understand and sympathize with those who do not wish to have the memorial at the scene of the crime,  I think that NOT having the memorial service at the lake because "phasers went on outings there" is knuckling under, depriving ourselves of our freedom to go wherever we wish and assemble there peaceably.  Denying ourselves our right to go somewhere for that kind of reason would be allowing Straight to have too much influence in our lives, which is in essence, exactly what we are both mourning (for those that Straight influenced to the point of death) and hopefully, beginning to heal.

Personally, I'd like to have the memorial on Mel Sembler's or Miller Newton's front lawn, if I didn't have enough respect for our dead to keep me from wanting to besmirch a solemn occasion such as this by having it in close proximity to either of those vile and disgusting criminal child abusers.

Which brings me to another point I would like to add---This memorial is for US, as we remember our friends and family members, both living and dead, who have suffered, and, all too often, continue to suffer due to wounds physical, emotional, spiritual,  and psychological.  I don't think we need to turn this into a protest or pep rally, this is not about identifying and blaming the perpetrators--we know who they are and what they did, and they know that we know.  This is about us and our healing process, about remembering our lost friends, about mourning their untimely departure from this world.  It is also, I believe, for the wounded that Straight produced by the score:  The scared, lonely woman who calls you late at night with traumatic memories and frightened thoughts; the guy who can't hold a job because he can't deal with the paranoia he feels when he's outside his house; the man who hasn't been able to find happiness in his personal relationships because he only knows how to express himself by "confronting" others; the guy who is haunted by nightmares about being back in Straight; the woman who resigns herself to being a drug addict because it was drilled into her that she was :powerless over drugs" and now believes she is doomed to a life of addiction because she is a "druggie whore piece of shit"; the people who can't cope with daily life because of the traumatic incidents that they experienced in Straight,; the guys and girls who held such promise at one time, but who are now scarred shadows of their former selves; these are the people that I will mourn alongside the dead;  these are the people who still stand, perhaps barely, as an example of the horrendous crimes that were not only committed against us, but were committed against us in the name    of "love", "honesty", "empathy and sensitivity", and "spirituality".  These are the wounds that we have suffered, individually and collectively,   inflicted on us by evil doers and blind fanatics who had and have no regard for the pain they have caused.  I will mourn the dead and wounded, but I will also take hope and comfort in the presence of so many of us who survived the ordeal, those who are still alive, those that while struggling perhaps, continue to go forward,  minute by minute, reclaiming their lives, therir minds, and their dignity as human beings.  I will take solace in the fact that in spite of the damage done by Straight, we the living can and must carry on, to not only survive, but to thrive; to be a bright beacon of hope to those still suffering; to show all the world, among them those who have committed atrocities against us, that we were not defeated, we were not destroyed, we will not be silenced nor intimidated, we will embody the resilience of the human spirit, we will continue to heal, to learn, to grow, and to live[/b].

woah! Horsey. Stop the drama! I never said.. don't have it there!  It's just a memory that belongs to me and I was asking if it was an accurate one..... See, I remember other places too; malls, and other places. As I was posting that.. Potomac Mills and Cameron Run came to mind.. Walt Witman and etc came to mind (all creepy places to me).  I suppose when you spent so much time Not doing what Phasers did... You tend to take note of the things  you're not going to go out of your way  to do in life This aside, I would still be there, I never said I wouldn't because of any choosen place. I was just  amused for a moment that the place being discussed was a very specific place that Outings were given.... ROFL. It was a Straight approved outing site..was it not? Member, I was asking.... LOL

I see, I am easily amused  :P

I agree w/ you tho.. The Sembler's lawn, Newton Church is ideal  :P I was also thinking of places like.. The rehab L3slie Murd3n spews her poison at still today(what an ideal place to remember those who suffered), Mel Riddl3s High School, Dr.Pug's Office ......

Well, the most powerful poison I ever took was a woman.  Luckily she came with an antidote too...the trouble though, was in telling the poison from the medicine...they both taste so good.

Women(the curvy, teasin', voluptuous kind)...

Drink(over-proof Jamaican rum and Sierra Nevada Pale Ale)...

And song(hard humorous blues about endlessly sufferin for a curvy, voluptuous, tease),

Flaming Zambokas shots!!
Lighting the flame of those who's flame is out and shining a light for those hurt & lost!

Burke Lake Park closes at dark (all regional & national parks do).  I think there are a few places near Great Falls that are public property & not a part of the park.  However, that sort of worries me (this is the mom in me) about people possibly drinking near a rapid running river.  I see bad things happing there.  However, if we did this at a park, we could do it during the day time and not a night/6pm after the sun has gone down.

I for one would love to NOT do this at the building.  Being there last time when talking to the Fergesun people was rather creepy.  If that's where everyone decides to go, then so be it - I'll be there.

I want to memorialize other drug war victims, such as Tom Crossslin and Rollie Rohm, who didn't even really see it coming. They had faith that, as free soverign Americans, we can and must stand up for ourselves and what's right and do it right in front of our children. I think they knew full well that they were risking their very lives, especially there toward the end. But I think they also were counting on us, who know the truth, to see what happened to them and to take the message that it's time to wake the fuck up!

Michigan is an important territory in this war, and we have some grass roots support if we'll just recognize each other and commune with each other on our natural common ground. Mich is one of the states wherein DFAF is spending some millions of our stolen earnings (public funding) to fight against good Americans.

I hear ya Ant. but I think we need to just focus on the "victims of $tr8 memorial service" right now, which is becoming tricky enough on it's own.

Fairfax county is thus far unwilling to accomodate our request to gather after sunset in any of its' public parks and a candlelight vigil before dark just aint gonna cut it.  We're running out of options as far as the location goes.  I understand that some folks don't wanta come to the building but unless someone in the local area volunteers to have it on their private property then the building is our only option.  We are still open to suggestions but the time is starting to get a little tight.

The other point I want to make is that the Jews hold memorial services at the former concentration camps(and even have a museum at one that I know of) because that is where the tradgedy occurred, same with the Arizona memorial at Pearl Harbor, and the Oklahoma city bombing.  Nothing focuses the spirit like the site of a tradgedy.  Nothing would bring it home or make it more real(all too real for some, I understand) than to hold the service in the former parking lot of the building.  Of course, even in the other examples I gave, not everyone can handle the emotions that may arise from being at the scene of such tradgedies.  There are probably many survivors of those events who do not attend memorials at those sites.

We are trying as best we can to accomodate all the surviors who want to attend the service, which is why we have been trying to find some other site besides the building, but so far our search hasn't panned out.

In addition to finding an appropriate site for the memorial we are still looking for a place to throw the after-party/wake.  If you have any ideas or suggestions or would like to host either or both please let us know.

respectfully, pirate.

Oh! And L'n'F what was that you were saying about some public property near Great Falls that aint part of the park ??  Would it be conducive to a sunset candle-light vigil/gathering(assuming that no-one got drunk and fell into the river) ??  If it's not under the authority of the Fairfax county parks and rec. dept. then what authority would we have to approach to find out about it ?? Would you be willing to look into that a little more so we can try to figure this out as soon as possible ??

I actually already went by there today.  Apparently, the memory is not quite what it use to be - either that or the county bought that piece of land too as it is now part of the park authority.

Just saying, it's not that hard to do, it just takes a lil bit o planning, and wilingness to deal with a lil bit of red tape, but nothing insurmountable.  Just find out who runs the damn place, tell 'em you wanna have a memorial for departed friends and loved ones, and it's generally cool.  Not a big deal in the eyes of the folks that run the place, just tell 'em where and when and they will generally accommodate you.  Nothing to it but to do it......,

Frank, any ideas about location?

If nothing else pans out, have it at the building- I'll just double up the dosages.

any chance of having it at a local hospital, homeless shelter, crisis center, maybe at an ~old folks home or like fire dept? All of these places normally have some kinda meeting area: inside or out. Is there a Decent reahab/day treatment or church who might be close and willing?  Someplace that it may do some good for us and others outside of us (reminding them what good quality cares means and what bad care can do: in an indirect way) would be meaningful, imo.

Anywhere is ok w/me, I do think I'll be there, depending on my recovery.. and ability to drive and stuff.

Sorry if that is all really silly, but Im on Drugs! I had my surgery (after waiting 4yrs), yesterday!  :D

I wanted to add, I have heard of people getting 20+ saplings from the DNR for memorials.. Would anyone be interested in having a sapling/tree sprout... to plant at home or some chosen location? I can call around to find out where they get them, as usually they are free.

WD, I'm so glad to know that you're finally gettin' what you've been needin'for so long.

I was talkin' to Webdiva last night and she suggested we could hold the service at some retreat or something...like not to get religious or nothin' but if we could find some kind of friendly church or Buddhist retreat type place maybe they would be sympathetic.  Some place with a peaceful, natural setting.

Is there a camp ground close? That may be a god idea, so no one has to drive home also.

There is one I think would welcome us for even  a weekend and be very conducive to our wants and needs, But it is a Pagan/eclectic held safe land. I do know they allow all types of people of  any religious or non religious backgrounds to take use of this sacred safe sapce, but alas it is near Hancock Md. (pretty far from Springfield). But still may be a good idea for anyone who may want to gather for a weekend sometime. It may be a place they would allow us to come for a small event every year even.
And no one yell at me about the hippie thing, LOL. As I do know they don't intervene w/ any gatherings, if asked not to. But will also offer any assistance if we did ask. Basically it is a place for anyone w/ any background a safe place to explore healing.  Which is what many of us are looking for, at this event. 300 acres bound by a river on 3 sides.. in the mountians. Beautiful and safe for everyone to enjoy.

I am speaking of 4 Quarters Farm in Artemis PA.

Im still on Drugs and thinking too much, LOL... <3 me anyway please! LOL

You're good, girl.

I was just lookin' up retreats and churches and the like tryin' to find the right place, but every place I look, I just get the feelin' that they'll frown on the use of any alcohol, which would nix some of the offerings and the toasts and such. I think if we want to do this the way we are envisioning it we should just be righteous and gather at the building.  I wonder what that parking lot looks like now...

We already have verbal permission to gather there, but I think we would need to get something in writing with the Ferguson Co. letterhead on it, just in case the cops show up or something. Anyway this is draggin' out way too long and we need to get the invite out like yesterday...

Fuck it.  I say we walk right up to the beast and make him humble.

:flame:  Tell Furgeson to move over, we're using the place for the night... they'll get scared, leave, then we can do whatever we want in there.

 seriously though, at the building is a great idea actually. People must decide if they want to have a memorial or a party. Parties can happen anytime of the year, memorials like this are much less frequent. In other words, just focus on the issue at hand, the party will always be there.    in November it's usually cold outside at night so you might want to consider an inside venue for the party/overnighter... maybe a hotel group discount deal thingy or something. Hotels are neutral ground, unless you get really wild or something... that would be cool... right?

Theres gonna be a real reverent memorial service.

Then after the service we'd like to be able to go somewhere with everyone who wants to party and relax, kick back, talk, and raise our whiskey jars.

2 seperate but related events.

I am under the impression.. we have no permission to enter the building, Nor do we  have permission to gather during their buisness hours?  So are you thinking of standing in the dark parking lot, wondering who each other is and if everyone is nice, safe and friendly, LOL?  (Some of us have severe anxiety already...) And then what after standing in the dark, possibly uneasy around each other, going to a restuarant/bar or some place to party? Im a little confused.

DF, as far as ceremony.. I think it would also be a good idea to have a planned agenda (for lack of a better word), but then also allow time for anyone who needs to pray or make an offering to the event of their own a moment if they so choose. Member we are all diffrent in how we pray, grieve, process and heal.

Withdraw, sweetie,

We are not gonna go into the building.  We plan to gather at the building around dusk(6pm, I don't know if the farmers almanac has been consulted on what time the sun will set on Nov. 11 or what).  The idea is to all get together there, in the ol' parking lot and then I'm sure there will be some time for everyone who wants to reacquaint themselves with ol' friends an' such to do so.  I'm not exactly sure about the timing of everything, but the idea is to have the service right around sunset so we can have some candles and incense burnin' and such.  It won't really be that dark, but dark enough for the candles to work their charm.  There is a plan of action as to what the service will entail and there will be a time within the service itself for people to pray and make offerings and speak openly if they so choose.  It's not gonna be a just standing around staring aimlessly at the ground thing.  Perhaps DF can elaborate some on this...He has this truly beautiful vision of what the service should be...

After the service we are planning to have a party somewhere but we don't know where just yet.  Hopefully at some local survivors house or maybe at a hotel with a bar or something like that.  It would be great if some local survivor would volunteer themselves to host the after-party.  That's really what we're hopin' for...but if that doesn't happen then we'll figure something else out.

I understand about the anxiety thing.  I sympathize.  I have some of that too.  I don't really know how to ease that anxiety, except to personally do my best to rise to the occaision and make everyone as comfortable as possible.  I think we should all do our best to be respectful of each other despite our different interpretations of our common experience.

I will personally watch out for you.

Well here is a situation...

We want to get the invite out, it was all set to go and we waited for the Fla folks to write up thier piece for the invite(Still Waiting By The Friendly Way)...

Then we got word of the Atlanta event, really decided to hold the horses because they would need to get organized before sending out the invite...

Then there came about the realization that alot of folks will not come if it's at the old building, even though it is now a plumbing supply warehouse I think?....

Well, I think we can manage to honor all drug war vets and pows, it will be veterans day afterall, I think the reflecting pool is fine,  we definately will want to find a willing and able party host, We have so much momentum going now with folks helping and all, I have no doubts just ready to know where the service will be held...

Frank, any ideas about location?

Also, does anybody else want to help us come up with an outline for the ceremony itself...

I take the silence around that to mean I have everybody's support?

Hey DF my friend....I got a couple people who has contacted me and are willing to help out with the Atlanta event. I will try to give you a call tonight so that we can hammer out some of the details.

Well, we ain't gonna go for any big time production numbers in St. Petersburg, just an informal gathering, maybe a brief opening statement,  give anyone who wants to a chance to say something, maybe read out the names of the dead, maybe a moment of silence for the dead and still suffering.  The main point is to BE THERE.  Show up and give voice to your memories, or remain silent, but attend and help us remember those of us who are no longer among the living, and those who are alive and suffering.  We'll probably have a floral arrangement, and some candles for everyone.  Nothing fancy or formal, just a memorial.

I kind of like the idea of people maybe showing up an hour early if they feel like it, to hang out and say hi, then we can get on with the memorial at 6:00.

It'd be hard at the Cincy building since they are still killin the kids' minds and souls at that building. Bad karma abounds there now and it may overpower and significantly interfere with ability to be reverent of those dearly departed. An inactive area is tedious enough as it is... in other words.   :o

Come down off your throne
And leave your body alone
Somebody must change
You are the reason
I've been waiting so long
Somebody holds the key
Well, I'm near the end and I just ain't got the time
Well, I'm wasted and I can't find my way home

Come down on your own
And leave your money at home
Somebody must change
You are the reason
I've been waiting all these years
Somebody holds the key
I'm near the end, and I just ain't got the time
Oh, and I'm wasted, and I can't find my way home

But I can't find my way home
But I can't find my way home
But I can't find my way home
But I can't find my way home
Still, I can't find my way home
And, I ain't done nothing wrong
But, I can't find my way home

Sometimes we know, sometimes we don't
Sometimes we give, sometimes we won't
Sometimes we're strong, sometimes we're wrong
Sometimes we cry
Sometimes it's bad when the going gets tough
When we look in the mirror and we want to give up
Sometimes we don't even think we'll try
Sometimes we cry

Well we're gonna have to sit down and think it right through
If we're only human what more can we do
The only thing to do is eat humble pie
Sometimes we cry

'Fore they put me in a jacket, and they take me away
I'm not gonna fake it like Johnnie Ray
Sometimes we live, sometimes we die
Sometimes we cry

Sometimes we can't see anything straight
Sometimes everybody is on the make
Sometimes it's lonely on the lost highway
Sometimes we cry, sometimes we cry

Gonna put me in a jacket, and take me away
I'm not gonna fake it like Johnnie Ray
Sometimes we live, sometimes we die
Sometimes we cry, sometimes we cry

Sometimes we live, sometimes we die
Sometimes we cry, sometimes we cry

this is funny, cause with ALL THIS talk and planning, I guarantee there will only be 1 or 2 people who show up at any given location. I'll bet my left nut.

I'll try to find Dean Mistretta's address, so you can send it to him after the memorial.  He'll enjoy it, and I bet you haven't used it in years anyway.

Im willing to bet BOTH of my nuts on this one.

Lets see,Sammie "Did you see me on Montel?" Monroe,Mike Sherman...hmmm...I cant think of any others, unless of course Wes Fager can find the time to pull his mouth  away from his exhumed dead son's atrophied cock.

Well, I just want to say again that there seems to be plenty of living folks who did not survive Straight Incorporated...

There is a part of me that is gone too...

I hope we can somehow acknowledge this together on the 11th...

I hope somebody at the memorial can speak about those of us stuck in a living death...

This internet thing is wearing thin, I really look forward to meeting the people who make up the community of survivors...

That sounds great, really, but unfortunately we are not joking when we say that it will be Sammie,Shermy, and maybe two or three others that will show up.
I understand your wanting to go just for the sake  of connecting with others, and supporting the cause, but if you go you will only meet the  likes of Sammy,Mike Sherman (when he's not hiding in the car) and their groupies.
If they show up and do their regular handing out flyers and asking questions like "Did you see me  on Montel?",then really theres nothing more that you can add to that.
Dont feel guilty of you cop out and dont go.Your not missing anything.
Oh sure,I encourage ALL PEOPLE here to go to these "events",but the fact still remains that you will only be the fifth wheel.
Dont waste precious gas on this folly, wait for the DVD.

This memorial is for US, as we remember our friends and family members, both living and dead, who have suffered, and, all too often, continue to suffer due to wounds physical, emotional, spiritual,  and psychological.

Havn't been around alot and I havent followed this thread...I do recall a site being mentioned earlier in the thread...but have forgotten the details...

DF references their presented appearance as an affront to what was likely one of the earliest taboos on record. This intended meaning is likely read on many levels. It might reasonably be a powerful trigger -- conscious or unconscious -- to cult time and circumstance, or even to potty training experiences. Possibly the person who posted it has triggers from other things in this venue that elicit the use of the shit/worth comparison tactic. Possibly this venue recreates and triggers in some ways the original cult model? I guess that with no empirical evidence whatsoever. Just a guess, just totally wagering a guess, never talked to the guy (girl?). However, this does not answer your question of why this tool is used over other possible tools.

Regarding your "spaminating shit" post, actually, you were insulting every single person who posted what you consider to be spam on this thread. Which is neither here not there, you aren't more or less insulting than anyone else really, it's just the shitt references might be one of the weirder abusive things about 12-step cults. Regarding your "living dead" post, I was actually hoping you could explain it better just because I don't think I know what or who you are talking about so I thought I would ask. Answer or don't, it's just a message board. There is no insult in discussing these things.

These references to body functions are interesting. I think they might function at least in part as thought-stoppers. Some says to you "I think you are full of shit," you are talking to someone who has an agenda to make you feel shame. They want to convey to you that not only do they think you are not telling the whole truth, you are actually contaminated and dirty on the inside from this. Another thing I was thinking about, Straight really was hyper interested in everything that was in our bodies or had been in our bodies. What did you put in your mouth, up your nose, in your arm, what has been between your legs? Do you put things in these places Straight doesn't think should be there? Confess your ingestion! Eliminate! One of Straight's biggest lies is that shame is helpful. It also makes secrets into shit that you are full of and you have to confess them to get clean. It is normal and healthy for people to keep things private and to engage in a certain amount of stepping around the truth and subterfuge, according to their needs for safety of person.

Sue, If you are for real (sorry to imply anything diffirent, we do get alot of ~not real/sincere questions), And You have chosen to Not send/Warehouse your kid because of visiting this site.. Then us being here is entirely worth it. Even if just one kid gets saved from what we have been through, I swear.. My being there and now here.. WAS  ALL worth it.
I have suggested this before and been shot down.. But maybe try and explain to her what Can happen if she gets into legal trouble and the court sends her to some place like Straight. If I had understood that one thing, I would not have done half the stuff I did. And to know my parents were trying to save me from it, would have changed my view on them for sure. Ok, I'd like to think so anyhow.

You're not gonna bring out some blue chair on stage and play are you?  I thought this was supposed to be a quiet memorial for those who have passed, not a "gig".

Q. How many "survivors" does it take to plan a memorial?

A. A few to hash out the details, compile lists of the dead, & send the invites and 50 to argue over what sort of behavior's 'appropriate' for such a "solemn event."

No. People get to say. You just mind it because you don't like their opinion. Their opinion is, they don't want it to be a gig. That is a valid opinion.

I'm sure that "we" could find a lot of healing their.....it's not just the building, it's the gathering with people from Striaght - old staff members...who knows they might want to lock me up and throw away the key. This time....I show up on my on accord?? I didn't know what Straight was. I was told I was going to a foster home....I was greatful knowing I wasn't going to have to wake up at my mom's home and not know if I was going to be beat. I had smoke pot once and had drank 1 time with my mothers permission.....I lied to people in school about the drugs I had done and because they heard me share this information with them or one of my our shared friends (I had done those drugs period end of discussion) I was only in six months - the goods news is my mother stopped drinking and that really wasn't her problem she was bearable when she had a drink or two?  After leaving striaght I became what I was labled. At 19 I admitted myself into Mary Washington Hospital I was able to start the healing process for myself, from not only my childhood but striaght as well, I am ready to close this chapter in my life. Are we going to have complete anonymity from the owners now? I'm thinking about going and supporting what is going on down south.

No, we will not be able to get in to the building.  I think that a lot of people would probably end up trashing the place if we did!

While it smelled different, there was still an underlying "Straight" smell.  The current occupants probably never even notice!

It was very creepy to be sure!

When I was driving up, and still on I495, there was a huge knot in my stomach.  When I was getting ready to turn into the front parking lot, I though I was going to hurl!

I'm not sure what it's going to be like in a couple of weeks knowing that I'm going to see people that I use to know and spent so much time trying to forget.

This memorial is for US, as we remember our friends and family members, both living and dead, who have suffered, and, all too often, continue to suffer due to wounds physical, emotional, spiritual,  and psychological.

I know Doc Slow is also planning on reading that out loud at the Atlanta service and his hope is that we can coordinate an exact time for all three locations to be hearing those words...

It's looking like lots of details will be coming together at the last moment and that there really is some momentum building...

Somebody is gonna have to kidnap Ginger again and bring her down too

I think Doc Slow has other reasons for wanting to know...

First, I thought Doc Slow was doing the Atlanta memorial and DF was going to the VA one so I'm confused there.

Second, someone else said that Doc Slow is driving a fair distance to attend and didn't want to be the only one there so how would that have an effect on his house?

Third, does DF have an imposter around?  Why the two different answers?

Post by: Botched Programming on October 30, 2006, 10:07:57 PM
Hey everybody...Sorry it's taken me so long to get back on the forum...my personal computer went down and the one at work has a filter on it and will not allow me to even check my personal e-mail. Any way I am asking for people to RSVP so that I will know it will be worth my time and effort to drive to Atlanta as I live down in south Florida. At the current time only a couple people has expressed intrest in a Memorial service for this location and if only 2 or 3 people want this memorial it may be more viable for us to participate in the memorial in either VA or FL. So please let me know so I will know how to proceed on my part.

Thanks....Doc

Title: Letter at the Memorial Service
Post by: Anonymous on November 05, 2006, 03:30:40 PM
There will be a letter for everyone to sign at each Memorial Service. Great pains were and are still being taken to ensure it represents all viewpoints as accurately as possilbe. I do want the letter to be good for everyone...but I also know it is impossible to please everyone, impossible to capture every single viewpoint, not everyone will
agree with every word written, will have their own ideas as to what the letter should or should not say, etc.

With that in mind, additional sheets will be provided at the Memorial Service so that additional handwitten comments can be added by anyone who wishes to do so. That way anyone who wants to say something different, in their own way can do so. All signed sheets, extra comments, etc., will be sent with the original letter to each recipient.

As far as who the recipients of the letters will be....a list of names has been started and that list will be at the Memorial Service for everyone to see. Anyone who thinks of another name that should be on the list can add that name.

I'm about to leave out too.

Part of my personal offering to the fallen and to all those who suffered at the hands of $tr8 will be a pilgrimage to the top of an ol' rocky-topped mountain out in the Shenandoahs.  It's a mountain I have climbed with Dragonfly before.  Nigh on ta 20 years ago.  A mountain we used to climb on 4th and 5th phase and when we were fresh outta the mind-rape-brainwash cult.  On 4th and 5th phase we spent as much time as we could out in those mountains, far away from $tr8. The only way up the mountain is by fording a cold, fast river at it's base.  Once across the river we(DF and I) plan to hike/climb straight up it(there is no trail).  I reckon it will be a long arduous climb, but invested with meaning and nurturing to the spirit.  Once at the top, which aint quite bald but has very few, if any, large trees due to the rockiness of the summit, we are gonna establish a camp and plant a black flag of mourning at the highest point possible and anchor it down good.  Then we are gonna collect fire wood and sit up on that mountain all night long keeping a votive fire.  The view to the East from up there is simply spectacular.  We plan to hold a vigil up there all night, until we see the sun risin.

I wish a safe trip to everyone travellin.  See ya in Virginia. Peace.

Anyway, I gotta roll...

I'm still reeling from the after-shocks.

It was a beautiful and very empowering service!  I think it brought us all closer as a community, having shared this undescribable moment together.  Perhaps a bit of closure, too.

The grand finale was great!  Watering the wall! Some even went back to do it again!

It was great to be able to meet those who I hadn't met before and to see those who I knew.  A bunch of good people they are!

This will be something I will never forget!

I'm home now.

What a trip!

So good to be with people who get it!

For those who couldn't make it I will describe the scene some.  The front of the building has all kinds of energy in it.  Of course Ferguson is a business.  They sell plumbing supplies and lighting fixtures, so the front of the building actually looks quite warm and inviting, that is, as commercial buildings in the middle of Babylon go.  The grounds out front are all nicely landscaped and the grass is all lush and green, but as you turn the corner toward the back parking lot, which I sorta think of as the last stop before the gates to hell, a post-apocalyptic scene unfolds.  The contrast is quite stark.  The gravel is still there.  Hardly anything is alive.  It is like an abandoned lot.  I mean the whole area around it is all developed with commercial bussinesses but no one wants that back parking lot.  The only thing growing there is some hearty scrubgrass, all yellow and dry and sparse.  That side of the building looks as though it has been totally ignored for years or maybe decades.  The mortar between the bricks is all falling out and vines are growng up the walls.  Ol' pieces of rusting metal litter the grounds. The same ol' pine trees border the lot.

We chose to have our memorial service right in the middle of the back parking lot.  Seemed appropriate, and despite the wave of nausia that I think came over just about everyone who showed up, we were in the right place.  A canopy was set up.  Under the canopy an altar was created out of 2 blanketed, folding card tables.  One blanket was black canvass(a piece of this black canvass is the mourning flag flying) and the other was from Tajikistan.  Then  white flowers and white candles and incense and sage were spread on the altar.  A circle of about 40 candle lanterns defined the outer boundary of the space we held. These lanterns were all lit as the ceremony began.  There was a bell made out of an ol' nitrious tank that had been cut in half hangin' behind the altar and as the bell was slowly rung another candle was lit until the circle was complete. Poetry was read.  Offerrings were made.  There was about a 10 minute silence at one point, as the candles on the flowered altar danced and flicked their light... M.I.s were burned.  People were free to speak their minds and they did.  The past was unleashed and things that had been left in darkness were brought to us....and by that I mean that there was a sense of righteousness and validation...

...of dignified respect.

After all the offerings were made and words spoken there was a toast to the fallen and the wounded.  Plastic cups were passed out and people were given a choice of Champaigne,  Jamesons Irish Whiskey or Soda.  It was a long toast, I can't remember it all now, but it was righteous, I know that.

All in all it was a triumphant memorial.  The cops even showed up at the end, just as we were all gettin' ready to cut out 'a' there...I didn't get near 'em but I think some survivor who had parked near where the cops had pulled up, talked to them and they left.  None the less we got out of their in a hurry after that!

I just want the people who couldn't make it for whatever reason but who wanted to be there to have some idea of what went on.

Oh...and the peeing on the building an' stuff too....

...Oh and the last time I peed on the building before I split I looked to my right, toward the door that we all walked through, every day on our way to the intake room or group, and there were flowers from the altar sticking out sillouetted against the Babylonian night.

Beautiful.  Simply beautiful.

This was truely the most moving experience I have ever had.  The memorial was beautiful, the set up was perfect.
Thank you so much to Dragonfly and Starry-eyed pirate for your excellent ideas and organization.  Also a special thank you to Valhalla, lostnfound and Str8survivorVA.  Everyone that I met, I feel is family and I hope to meet you all again someday.
Thank you to everyone who made this all happen as well as the after party.  Had an awesome time meeting everyone.
Thank you for allowing me to be a part of it.

Froderick played Stairway To Heaven at the end and we all sang.  Man, I'm tellin ya it was beautiful!  Nice job Frod.

Thanks! It was an honor to play that for Steve & Kelly the other night. Thanks to NCL for the last-minute encouragement and for printing up the lyrics, and thanks to the people who sang along! I would have been lost without the vox...

The ceremony was ended in the same deliberate way, but in reverse, so that as the bell rang out another candle was extinguished until the circle went dark again.

Just really wantin the people who couldn't make to get a clear picture of what went down.

hello - I joined this sight and my username is Sybil....I was at the service not to long ago and your faces still ring clear in my mind...I miss all of you and wish I had more time to spend with each of you. Today - I find comfort in knowing that I'm not alone with my thinking. I will say this...I don't know how much I will post on this sight as me?? I have trust issues with anything that has to do with Straight. There is a part of me....that knows the power that William Sembler has and I am sure he has someone watching this site....maybe we all should find other forms of conatct...I don't know?? I met someone from B-more that I would love to have a drink with see live music together.....
