Richard J. Herrnstein (May 20, 1930 – September 13, 1994) was an American researcher in animal learning in the Skinnerian tradition. He was one of the founders of quantitative analysis of behavior.
 
His major research finding as an experimental psychologist is called "matching law" -- the tendency of animals to allocate their choices in direct proportion to the rewards they provide. To illustrate the phenomenon, imagine that there are two sources of reward, one of which is twice as rich as the other. Herrnstein found in his research that animals often chose at twice the frequency the alternative that was seemingly twice as valuable. This is known as "matching," both in quantitative analysis of behavior and mathematical psychology". He also developed melioration theory with William Vaughan, Jr.
 
He was the Edgar Pierce Professor of psychology at Harvard University and worked with B. F. Skinner in the Harvard pigeon lab, where he did research on choice behavior and behavioral economics. In 1965, and with Edwin Boring, Herrnstein authored 'A Source Book in the History of Psychology'.

The Society for the Quantitative Analyses of Behavior was founded in 1978 by Michael Lamport Commons and John Anthony Nevin. The first president was Richard J. Herrnstein. In the beginning it was called the Harvard Symposium on Quantitative Analysis of Behavior (HSQAB). This society meets once a year to discuss various topic in quantitative analysis of behavior including but not limited to: behavioral economics, behavioral momentum, Connectionist systems or neural networks, hyperbolic discounting, foraging, errorless learning, learning and the Rescorla-Wagner model, matching law, Melioration, scalar expectancy, signal detection and stimulus control, connectionism or Neural Networks. Mathematical models and data are presented and discussed. The field is a branch of mathematical psychology. Some papers resulting from the symposium are published as a special issue of the journal Behavioural Processes

It may just be me, but something has always bugged me. We all know Straight says they were a drug/behavior treatment center. The truth is they were NOT a drug rehab in any way shape or form. Helen Peterman didnt even have a high school diploma. Betty Sembler had NO experience or qualifications to be identifying drug addicts, we all know that staff did not have the qualifications. I can say in the time I spent there , I would hazard to guess that only a few would have really qualified as a "drug addict". So, can we please delete all references to it being a "drug rehab". They were certified by no organization. They were not JACO approved although they used their seal, they used it fraudulently. It is an unfair label to us all to say it was a "drug rehab". I really hate them being called that because they had NOTHING that qualified them as such. They had no doctors, nurses, shrinks nothing so why do we keep refering to them as a drug rehab. They werent plain and simple.
We all know that Betty had about as much qualifications as a worm.
So, although it would be time consuming can we please remove that language from the sites?

"The Seed", a drug abuse treatment program in Florida that, until recently, received funding from the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare, is based on a similar philosophy."

The court held the act of Brainwashing was outrageous conduct and victims could recover civil and punitive damages for its application. Dead Queens teen was restrained by school staff  

A Queens teenager died suddenly Thursday after he was restrained by staff at a school for emotionally and developmentally troubled kids, police and students said.

Corey Foster, 16, of Jamacia, was hauled off of a basketball court at the Biondi Education Center at the Leake & Watts facility in Yonkers Wednesday night and went into cardiac arrest as he was being removed, witnesses said.
 
School staff members restrained Foster during a dispute in the gym, police said.
 
He apparently became “agitated” while playing basketball, Det. Lt. Patrick McCormack told the Daily News.
 
“Corey was laying on his stomach,” said Malike Legree, 17, of Brooklyn, who saw three or four staffers try to remove Foster from the basketball court. “At first the staff was laying on top of him. When they got off him he wasn’t moving.”
 
“They never tried to diffuse the situation,” he added.
 
Antonio Reeder also saw the deadly tussle.
 
“Right now I’m afraid,” Reeder said. “(Foster) was harmless. He loved people. He knew how to have a social conversation. He wouldn’t hurt anybody. He just had a little anger problem.”
 
Foster was pronounced dead about 9:22 p.m. at St. Joseph’s Medical Center, cops said.
 
“We are collaborating with police and the medical examiner on the examination,” said Meredith Barber, a director at Leake & Watts.
 
Investigators are interviewing teachers, staff and students to determined why and how Foster was restrained, McCormack said.
