Given that, it is easy to see your project as an unbalanced attack on a service "industry" about which I doubt you have an adequate understanding.

Anon, I don't think you're giving yourself nearly enough credit. It actually takes considerable effort to unsee the obvious when you're immersed in it. That's probably the #1 cause of the kind and level of ongoing stress that has left so many of us with PTSD.

What do ya'll think, though? After reading this:

Quote
My mother was at Straight when she was a teenager, shortly before she had me (however she does not want to be mentioned). My grandfather was the drug czar of Massachusetts at the time, and last year, my aunt was a counselor at Sagewalk...

I have a very hard time seeing how anyone could entertain the notion that this kid lacks perspective on the industry.

i agree with you 1oo%. it sounds like she has plenty of perspective on the industry to me.  she is a senior high school student. if she had no perspective she wouldn't have picked this topic. most high school students dont even know what the troubled teen industry is, or that behavior modification programs exist. you will also notice that she said her teacher said it had to be a topic that was of interest to her. i bet it will be the most interesting report in her class. she handled the "turkey" pretty well too. i like her, and i hope she does well.

ace,
pay no attention to the "turkey". i, as a survivor of bethel boys academy, admire and resect you for the courage you show in taking this topic on. it is a topic that needs as much attention as possible. most people want to turn their heads and act like this torment doesnt exist. i really wish it didnt. i was abused mentally, physically, emotionally, and verbally 24 hrs a day for 4 yrs. i suffer from ptsd. i have multiple panic, anxiety, and paranoia attacks daily.i manage to lead a seemingly normal life to people who do not know me, although below the surface looms a very disturbed person. i am socially withdrawn, have no friends other than survivors, and trust no one. the part that is worst of all is that it is still happening to children every day. to give you a testimony of my ordeal would be to write a book myself. it would be much simpler if i were able to answer specific questions, however i want to assist you in anyway i can, because i appreciate your effort in exposing one of the greatest injustices in american history.
in peace and harmony,

Okay, this one's busting me inside.

I'm a mod of a forum I most certainly will not name on Fornits (and I most certainly don't use the name Milk Gargling Death Penalty there!), one where the primary subject is of interest to teenagers and pre-teens. Kids post there, kids I don't know the backgrounds of.

One part of me is saying "Jesus fuck, what if one of them really IS in danger of being sent away and I DIDN'T warn him?" and the other is saying "Cripes, asshole, if they really were they probably wouldn't be posting there, they're just kids and this shit will give them nightmares. Don't post it, they shouldn't even have to think about this!"

Which attitude is correct?

milk, do you have the option to post as a guest? if so you could just post a link to fornits and let them figure it out for themselves. it may scare some of them or give them nightmares but it would be nothing compared to the nightmare of being sent to one of these places. maybe if they checked fornits out and it scared them bad enough some of them that are on the wrong path in life would take another look at how they are living their life, or the decisions they are making. most kids who participate on forums are in the higher iq percentile. i personally think that if we adults treated kids a little more maturely that they would respond more maturely. i think that we as adults shield children way to much these days. they are exposed to far worse in school and even on the nightly news than anything here on fornits. anyway just my opinion, i am sure bsarro will now put me on the list of idiotic fools, but i dont care he is on mine.

Would you avoid telling them about STDs, because it might scare them? It may give them motivation to 'act' appropriately around their parents, which could prevent a few placements.

good point deborah. i am glad there were at least a couple of mature replies.

Part of the problem is that "good" is defined as non abusive. Lets say a programme adequately feeds kids, does not physically abuse them or force "therapy" onto them or have bizarre punishments and petty level systems. This merely means that the kid wont come out traumatised by the experience. It does not really actively help with whatever problem the kids is there for.

If a place has kids from 12 to 18 and claims to treat everything from brattiness, to aspergers, to adoption issues to alcohol and drug use this to me is a red flag because the range of issues and kids is so broad and very few "therapists" are qualified to look after so many things. It encourages the idea that it is ok for a kid who is causing their family any level of grief to become some well paid stanger's complete responsibility. Because a kid prefers a programme to life at home does not mean that the programme is good. It could just mean that life at home is really shit.

i agree with you. there are no "good" programs by my standards of the definition, however to attend a non-abusive program compared to the four years of horror i went through, and to come out not traumatised compared to what i deal with on a daily basis would be "good". dont get me wrong , i despise all programs, even the non-abusive ones. they remind me of title loan places and rent to own stores, they are just waiting to prey on parents who feel helpless. parents need to step up and realize they are hurting their children for life. maybe i could have found something positive to draw from if i had not been abused, now, on the contrary, life is a daily struggle for me. if you ask me there is no place in our country for any of them.

oops, i dont know what my issue is with logging in.

Fine, you have a point. Probably what I should have said was something more along the lines that people are being close minded if they really truely believe that there are not some good programs, mixed in with the thousands that exist. That 100% of programs are bad, and abusive. It's just not possible.

I however DO believe that there are a lot of programs that are bad, and harmful to a child. But, I am not going to slap a label on all of them that say they are all BAD!

i am sure there is a decent program thrown in here and there, but how would parents discern the difference. until the government comes up with a way to supervise, monitor, and regulate these programs they should all be shut down to stop the abuse of children. i would rather tag them all bad and shut them down than leave 1000 open to harm our children because there are 2 good ones open. the end doesnt justify the means. a few children get help at the expense of many others. or here is a concept: how about parents get back to being parents and quit sending there children away in the first place. the programs are the supply and the parents are the demand. without demand there would be no need for supply.

Who was running it when you were there i heard they were worse than Bethesda

herman fountain was running it then and it was pretty bad , but i  am reserved at saying it was worse than any others. it was horrible, but they all destroy childrens minds. the people who ran bethesda went to missouri and opened mountain park who was constantly in the news until they were closed down for the same type of abuse at bethel. i can only imagine what you went through. keep your head up though and if you ever need to talk about it i am at  http://[email protected]

This is a strictly question and answer board. If you feel the need to start a flame fest have at it up in troubled teens. The guest is more than welcome to post his or her comments. However, given the fact that the guest has left no comments either way to support the claim of LRA being a nice nice little place and the others have provided links with eye witness testimony I have to say that LRA is nothing more than a run of the mill money making BM bust em up torture center.
sorry didnt mean to step on your toes. i am starting to get the feeling you dont like me for some strange reason. i was just speaking from my heart and four long years of torturous hell. wasnt trying to start up a flame fest but i have no intention of sugar coating these programs to these parents. the threat is real and needs to be presented that way. i didnt realise that this board was for questions and answers only. my bad for not reading the instructions. since you dont like me i will make sure i dont post on your boards again.  thank you though for your acknoweledgment and agreement on that program . later dude

this was me ,and yes i forgot to log in AGAIN!!!
