Straight, Inc. and Derivatives / My conversation with the deceased

Sorry for your loss. I hope the children have someone to take care of them. Its so sad that they had to loose their Mom at such a young age and under those circumstances.

Also, your quote is again very inappropriate.

Congratulations!! That is great news. My younger sister had her first grandchild at 34, she is now turning 40 in March and has 3. They are great kids too.

Straight, Inc. and Derivatives / weird habits
« on: November 10, 2003, 07:55:00 AM »
Can't say as I've noticed anything like yours, which I found amusing but my husband always says that I talk to much about my feelings and if I get hurt by something and now that my our daughter talks about things that bother her and that she is very sensative he accuses me of turning her like that. Oh well. He is a typical man. Thats not to say all men, just most. And I'd say that the men that went through Straight are more sensative than your average guy.
I also have nightmares waking up and thinking that there is someone watching me or is in the room. This happens alot. My husband is so use to it he tells me its ok and falls back asleep, Lord help us if ever there is someone in our room.

Straight, Inc. and Derivatives / A funny thing happened on my way to......
« on: November 10, 2003, 07:19:00 AM »
That is a strange story indeed. In the 30yrs I lived in Fla I never actually met or talked to a scientologist. At least they never admitted it to me and I worked in the Clearwater area alot. Never saw them passing anything out, I wonder are they not making enough money?? Tom Curse, John Travolta, Christy Alley and the rest of their drones not pulling enough?? Very Strange!!
Its embarrassing bringing tourist threw down town Clearwater on their way to Clearwater beach and have people say " I didn't know you had a Military base here?" and then I say "we don't we have the scientologist headquaters here", Oh thats impressive!!. HA HA
The company I worked for even delivered lost luggage to them, they were just weird and I couldn't wait to get out, like they may try to keep me or something. Not a friendly lot.

If a woman has to choose between catching a fly ball and saving an infant's life, she will choose to save the infant's life without even considering if there are men on base.

Straight, Inc. and Derivatives / I am an exsafe counselor
« on: November 10, 2003, 06:57:00 AM »
Ex,
I think you said that you were there from 92-95, I just find that it is hard to believe that "SAFE" could have changed that much from Straight in that short of time. I think it would be more probable if you were talking about present time, then I could believe that in could have had a chance to transform into your version. The version, I think ,that most people could live with. You admit yourself that you were drawn into it more than anyother job that you have had, perhaps you are still wearing those "Rose colored glasses"?!
I do agree with you in the fact that children do not have quite the same rights as their parents, but they do have the right to live in a safe and violent free place. Without mind or physical abuse (which Straight did impose), have the liberty to use the facility when needed, not when they are told to go and in privacy. The right to talk to their parents and I'm not talking about 2 or 3 months down the line. I would go mad if I couldn't talk to my daughter everyday!! My daughter is almost 9yrs and I can say that she doesn't have the right to do as she pleases as some of the others seem to imply. I'm sure it isn't that way at their houses either, but I would never allow my daughter in a place like straight or anything that resembles it. I hope in nevers comes to having to do that but if it did you can be damm sure that I will do my homework and make sure her Rights, her Soul and her Body would never be compromised. Everyone has the right to sunshine, fresh air and exercise. None of which I saw much of for my 3 month stay(I split). Living in Florida at one time you can appreciate the heat and know that we were only allowed kool aid (dixie cup size) at lunch and dinner, never any water that I can remember. We had no airconditioning, only the warehouse doors being up about 2-3 feet from the ground to let alittle Hot air circulate. I believe that POSITIVE not negative reinforcement builds a positive person, none of which I ever saw at Straight. I would say most if not all of us had low self esteem, so how is it spitting, sreaming, belittling and sitting on people for hours suppost to help exactly???? Please do tell, b/c that one has been puzzling me for 23 years.
Since we all know that Straight closed and Safe opened in 92, I find it hard to believe as I said before that much would have changed from what the space of a few months. I find it more believable that you had a blind eye to what was really going on. There were alot of people put in there for other reasons other than drug problems, I for one was put in there b/c I smoked pot and skipped school alot. In my day (1980) that was pretty normal, but my mother worked for a judge and well you can piece the rest together.
You can talk until you are blue but know this that you will never be able to change most of the peoples opinions on this web site, We unfortunately "lived the nightmare".

Straight, Inc. and Derivatives / So what if we not a Christian?

I'm sick to death of people shoving God down our throats! Thats all I'm saying about that. No offence intended.
As for 'Good ole boys', I kinda think of them as the white men of the world who think they are better than everyone else and who won't let women(any color) and men(any color other than white)either move up the corporate latter, into their special clubs or just don't want people to better themselves, want to keep the people I mentioned above down.
As for names like African American, I just want to know, if they go by that then why am I not called Irish/German/American???? I still call black people black and white people white and so on. I don't see the problem with this. I mean if you were born there(Africa) and now are in the US then by all means you s/b called that. But if you were born in America then you are up and formost American w/ whatever nationality as descendents.
I mean no offence to any Republicans on this website but why is it if you are having a discussion w/a Rep. they feel the need to make you see the light so to speak. As if I'm an idiot and can't see the truth clearly. I have met a few who think they will be able to convert me, with no luck I can tell you. I do believe in the death penalty by the way and am pro-choice.

Straight, Inc. and Derivatives / straight movie

GDuncan,
I went in in March of 1980 and split on 3rd phase sometime in June. Not exactly sure of the date. We may have just missed each other. I'm sure that if you are a guy I would definitely not know you since we never could look over there and believe me I tried to do it w/o getting caught. But if you are a girl then we may have crossed paths. I wish we would have, I haven't met anyone that I knew but then again it was long ago and I wasn't there too long. Thank GOD!!

Being sleepy can impair someone's ability to do thier job.  People
can sleep at home and come to the job with sleepiness still in their system. The sleepiness can still be there long after the employee has slept. When someone is found to be sleepy on the job, they can claim that they went to sleep the night before.  The only solution to this problem is to ban employees from sleeping.

Of course I wasn't there as long as most of you but I only remember getting to watch one movie and I beleive it was the "10 Comandments" on Easter of 1980. I had seen it before but enjoyed it only because I hadn't seen any TV for awhile and of course b/c we didn't have to relate in group, although I'm sure we had a discussion afterwards, I can't remember. I personally loved the movie "Midnight Express" and I think it would've given me even more courage to endure and escape.

Thats so funny, motivating always reminded me of Horshack too! I remember staff coming in and just sitting there and we all just wondering what was going on, so I guess it was some kind of ploy or rouse to get us all worked up about nothing. The first time I went to the Gasparella parade in Ybor city I remember telling my sister that I wasn't going to be jumping around like some idiot to get those beads they were throwing but after about 10 min. of not getting any b/c of all the hands/arms in the way I decided to go with the flow. By the end I had more than my sister and her friend combined, I think I had that extra added advatage of Straight motivating on my side. LOL

...it is worth discussing radical changes, not in the expectation that they will be adopted promptly but for two other reasons. One is to construct an ideal goal, so that incremental changes can be judged by whether they move the institutional structure toward or away from that ideal. The other reason is very different. It is so that if a crisis requiring or facilitating radical change does arise, alternatives will be available that have been carefully developed and fully explored."

Heres one for you that not many americans would've heard b/c its irish. They say "It was good craic(crack) last night" or "it was a good bit of craic(crack)" or "the craic was good" or "whats the craic". The word is pronouced crack but it is an gaelic/irish word for fun or good time. I died laughing the first few times I'd heard it and had to explain what it meant in america. They have crack here unfortunately but I'm not sure if thats what they call it. They also call cell phones mobiles, gas they call petrol, Q-tips are earbuds, sweaters are jumpers, pants are underwear, pencil erasers are rubbers,  braids are plats, bangs(in hair) are fring, jello they call jelly, what we call jelly is jam, french fries are chips, potatoe chips are called crisps, sprite or 7up they call lemonaide, if they want a beer they say a pint(they look at you funny if you say give me a beer unless you say bottle) if you ask for a screw driver(drink) they haven't a clue, if you are in a line for something its called a queue, bathroom/restroom is toilet,lu or jax, a wrench is a spanner, the trunk of your car is a boot, the hood is a bonnet, shopping carts are trollys, diapers are nappys, babystrollers are prams, vacuum is hoover, if you have a tantrum they call it a wobbler, getting drunk is getting pissed or going on a piss, ass is arse, and the middle finger(fuck U) is rarely used they use the peace sign inverted and it means fuck off, oh the list could go on and on. I personally don't change my words, they have american tv(tellie here) they know what I'm saying I just hate it if someone tries to tell me I should say their word just because I live here.
Sorry if I've gone on a bit.

Thanks for the info. I'm glad seed died out but to bad straight had to be its seedling.

I went to Lakewood starting in 77 and into straight in 80(orig bldg) but I was wondering if anyone knew a Oliver and Prescott Joy. They were my boyfriends older brothers and were in Seed in St. Pete sometime in I'm guessing early to mid 70's.
I had heard of seed but didn't know it was so popular in my school. I was pretty innocent until about 78 and in 9th grade we were on a split session so we hardly ever saw any of the upper classmen.
