When I read this thread It made me think of scallops, clams and shrimp.  I'm sure that shrimp is not being discussed. Please - try to improve the spelling....We are not Shell fish......

The Troubled Teen Industry / MANY SURVIVORS ARE NOW SUCCESSFUL
« on: July 17, 2004, 08:03:00 AM »
After reading many posts it seems that many of the survivors of these programs are now successful adults. Many are professionals - doctors, lawyers, nurses. Some own businesses. Obviously those who post here and elsewhere are quite articulate and concerned about social issues. You should all band together and do something about all of this.  We all grow up and we all make mistakes when we are young.

I read about this boy - and this was so outrageous and cruel. I hope that these people involved will be punished - perhaps then this type of abuse will end.

There are many abusive teen programs and parents should be very careful. When there are hundreds of horror stories one must realize that there must be some truth to them.  There have been so many deaths and injuries.  These programs may be more interested in your money than your child. Try telling them you don't have the money and see how fast they tell you that they are sorry.  They are looking for people with deep pockets.
There are so many less drastic steps that can be taken. Try being a parent -set limits, restrictions. Oh - it does take time - one must think about this BEFORE having children, or step-children for that matter....

I understand that it costs about one-dollar for a copy of the article.  That's odd.  It should be interesting to see what was written.

These boot camps have had many reports of abuse, sexual assault, and some children have died. Parents should be better informed about the dangers of these wilderness programs.  Unfortunately web-sites are deceptive. These programs are big money makers and the government is allowing them to proliferate. Something must be done to stop this.  More children will die as a result.

Are we at last brought to such humiliating and debasing degradation, that we cannot be trusted with arms for our defense? ... If our defense be the real object of having those arms, in whose hands can they be trusted with more propriety, or equal safety to us, as in our own hands?

These types of programs should all be shut down. Provo Canyon School has a notorious reputation in the psychological community. It is known as a facility of last resort for the truly difficult teens.  These reports of abuse that have been described by survivors of this program must be taken serioulsly by the authorities who allow programs like this to not only profit but proliferate.  Provo Canyon School is obvioulsly in violation of many rules, codes and laws. Particularly those laws that have been established to protect the mentally ill. It should be closed as a result of cruelty to those who suffer from diagnosed mental illnesses such as depression and bipolar disease.

It's quite offensive to refer to this man as "worthless scum." This will do nothing but cause animosity in the community and jury pool who will ultimately decide the fate of the two boys on trial.  This incident is so tragic for everyone involved. Many of these programs are fraudulent in that they try to keep youth in the program for a longer period of time to get more money out of their parents. Truth be told - it doesn't take two years to de-tox and get clean.
It may take several years for someone to re-program a brain.  What's truly horrifying is the fact that untrained and unlicensed people like Ah Quin are using potentially dangerous behavior modification techniques on children.  The State of Utah is promoting this and sanctioning it. They obviously did nothing to this program that was operating in violation of codes UNTIL a staff member died. This is so outrageous.
It's also quite puzzling that it took so long for help to arrive.
Is there an update on all of this? I was also wondering when these boys will have a bail hearing. Are they being denied bail?   It's obvious they did not intend to kill this man - reports indicate that they were surprised that he had died.
