Someone had mentioned something like this on another thread but I can't find it. How do all of these programs get so screwed up basing themselves on A.A./N.A.? Is A.A. fucked up or are they just bastardizing it? When I go to AA it seems pretty mellow to be honest, no scream therapy or soul raping, so how did all of this get started?
-
AA is very fucked up.
-
Well AA does have a lot in common with tough love, it teaches all about "enabling" and how selfish it is to help anyone struggling pretty much anytime, other than to tell them they are an alcoholic (or another such oholic) and need AA. And then of course the crux of the whole program is to admit that you're selfish and self centered. I think the reason they dont force anyone to go (well I dont think they even could legally) but they would probably call that enabling. The whole thing about you have to hit your bottom before you can be helped. They can be confrontational but in a very soft spoken way.
-
You kidding? People have had to fight through the courts to get judges and POs not to force them to attend AA meetings.
G: "If we do happen to step on a mine, Sir, what do we do?"
EB: "Normal procedure, Lieutenant, is to jump 200 feet in the air and scatter oneself over a wide area."

When were you at CEDU?
-
lol ya are you crazy people have to do mandatory AA meetings all the time. I had to do 6 weeks when i was arrested.
-
But compared to sitting in those raps and propheets, A.A. is nothing if you ask me. Kinda boring and the God stuff can be lame. Seems to me that these programs taking A.A. and interpreting it are the ones that are out of hand like the military schools and wacky Christian rehabs.
-
Ok you guys are right about that, I guess what I meant was the people *IN* AA dont go around kidnapping people. But not that they can't be court ordered. I was looking at it from the programs point of view. It would be illegal for them to go around kidnapping people, plus they would probably call that enabling, that's what I was trying to say. Of course if they get court ordered, they would probably call that "God's will." They have a very strange way at looking at things IMO.

of course, whether you agree with these analyses is a personal matter, but i thought you might appreciate the info.
also, a funny article on "beating" an intervention courtesy of modern drunkard magazine:

Thanks. But then we've got the million dollar question, how do we "cure" the junkie, crackhead or drunk? I don't see just letting these people destroy themselves as an option.

Well rest easy, friend. The good news is that addicts usually don't destroy themselves. Most people, if they don't get crushed by our attempts to rescue them, grow up and either abstain or manage their drug use.

My brother once warned me, w/ all earnestness, that one could be an alcoholic all their lives and never even know it! I told him that was my life's ambition.

Leave me alone. I'll destroy myself if I goddamn want to. It's my life, not yours you do-gooder asshole.

Try to take a bottle outta MY hands, and you'll walk away castrated and with a lot less teeth. Bring it on, you cocksucking do-gooder!

Too fucking bad---it's their lives, and their choices. No one needs some know-it-all "Big Brother" enforcing their values on them. I agree with the above anon, you sound EXACTLY like the founders of the fucked up treatment programs that have caused so many problems for so many people. Get your hand off of my ass and worry about yourself---if people want "treatment" for an imaginary "disease", they'll seek it. Otherwise, there ain't shit anyone can do about it. Who made you nursemaid to the world? Get over yourself.
-
Nivek, I understand EXACTLY where you are coming from, my dear boy! How can we as responsible citizens sit idly by and watch people sink into the depths of a depravity otherwise known as chemical dependency? Well let me tell you- we at SIBS can't, and won't!!!

Truer words were never spoken, my esteemed colleague!

Indeed. These druggies need help.
