Daytop Village / David Deitch
« on: October 01, 2007, 02:51:19 PM »
I've seen far too many posts questioning the origins of the TC and how it's philosophy has trickled down to other programs. I guess it's time for me to send all those still searching in the grassy knoll to this man.    For those want to see how Synanon was influential in Daytop, Phoenix House, and numerous other programs all you need to do is look up their connection with David Deitch, who by the way is a Synanon graduate. For those interested here is a link to him. ::argue::

The Troubled Teen Industry / So what is the solution?
« on: June 30, 2006, 10:33:00 AM »
Okay anybody reading most of the rantings in most of these forums come to the conclusion that there are a lot of bad programs out there. But I don't see any solutions for these kids. I'd like to here something about where to send these kids with all the severe mental health issues and severe behavioral problems. And I don't want to hear just send them to a mental institution. There are far more abuses going on at these so called medical facilities then one can possibly imagine. I'd like to see specific places to send some of these kids so that parents that are at their wits end can have a glimmer of hope. It's one thing to get up on your soapbox and proclaim to the world how your opinion is the only one that matters because of how many degrees you have in this specialty area but its a different story to actually bring a solution to the table. So lets hear solutions only in this thread please.

Anybody see all the footage about the looting and mayhem going on in New Hampshire today? Gee I wonder why not?

Homeschool is self regulating. The school board is not going to have illiterate useless people living in their homes forever if they don't have a working education policy.

The Ridge Creek School / Hidden Lake Academy / reading students mail

Does anybody know how HLA gets around United States Postal Regulations by opening and screening resident's mail for content and appropriateness as they say they do on their website? As  read the regulations this is forbidden and carries both fines and incarceration for each offense.

I am an atheist, out and out. It took me a long time to say it. I've been an atheist for years and years, but somehow I felt it was intellectually unrespectable to say that one is an atheist, because it assumed knowledge that one didn't have. Somehow it was better to say one was a humanist or agnostic. I don't have the evidence to prove that God doesn't exist, but I so strongly suspect that he doesn't that I don't want to waste my time.

The Troubled Teen Industry / What works?
« on: February 16, 2006, 09:20:00 AM »
I figured its about time I asked this question. I've seen all the negative responses to the different treatment modalities but nothing said of anything that works. Let me give an example of a ficticious case and I'd like to hear what people think is the best way to handle the person.
14 yo girl that has been drinking a six pack of beer on weekends and 4 or 5 joints with it since she was 12 years old. Has been to outpatient counseling for a year but continues to use. Grades have been falling for three years. Has little respect for authority figures. Has been expelled from school due to keying teacher's car.
What would you do?

The Ridge Creek School / Hidden Lake Academy / Follow the Money
« on: February 07, 2006, 03:16:00 PM »
This is the one area that no program like HLA wants anyone to look at. There are some pretty good debates going on here as to what HLA actually is. It sure looks like some real old school RTC to me. And I bet they get around a lot of things like licensing regulations by having parents pay tuition costs. I know of one program in New York that gets totally around licensing requirements by not taking one penny of public funds. They are funded strictly by private donations. That way they can basically do wtf they want. HLA doesn't appear to follow any of the guidelines that they claim to be, that of a traditional boarding school. Rather it seems that they are doing some kind of treatment with an educational component. One thing though that there needs to be accountability for though is the money trail. If in fact they actually are getting any money from insurance companies, it is with these insurance companies that you will find your best allies. Find out how they are able to bill for treatment sevices without being a licensed program. This is something the insurance industry won't stand for. Now Quack and Quack may ask why do I even care to comment on this subject, well it's rather easy, I don't like bullies. Especially educated ones ::noway::

Daytop Village / Former Staff
« on: April 05, 2005, 11:39:00 PM »
I worked as a counselor for Daytop for ten years and I'd like to share my experiences here. I've read a lot of the posts that put down a lot of the staff saying they were abusive and uneducated. My first reaction was this is all bullshit! I began working there in 1990 and left in the summer of 2000. I look back at those years and sometimes wonder was I one of those abusive uneducated assholes they are talking about. The truth is that in the beginning I was. There was always this us against them mind set with the educated professional staff on one side and the recovering staff on the other. Recovering staff feared the knowledge of the professional staff and the professioal staff feared the life experience knowledge of the recovering staff. The biggest problem the recovering staff had was misguided loyalty. I was definately guilty of that. That was until I finally realized I was following a bunch of assholes who I swear went home every night thinking of new ways to fuck with peoples heads. It was then that I decided well what would happen if I sought the knowledge that all these professionals had? Well it took a lot of hard work but as time went on I gained that knowledge by going to school, attending workshops, and not being afraid to ask the professionals a lot of questions. As I did that I not only grew as a counselor but as a person too. Working for Daytop had a lot of ups and downs. i met a lot of fantastic people but unfortunately My final years were a complete nightmare. I was ridiculed and emotionally abused by senior staff that were only interested in one thing, letting you know that they were in control. When I gave my notice and told them I was moving to Maine to be with the woman I loved, they told me I was crazy. What did I get for ten years of faithful service? Not a god damn thing, not even a thank you card.I left the field for three years after that nightmare but I'm back now working with kids in the correctional system. I hear that Daytop wants to open a facility in Maine. God Help Us if they do.
