The Troubled Teen Industry / The Five Freedoms

... of shelter care. (sorry, no, not a doo-wop band.)

I have a job in animal care at a no-kill shelter. (SPCA) A few months ago, my co-workers and I attended a care and treatment seminar for shelter wellness/standards.

Because of the fact that shelter conditions can range from amazing to a downright deplorable nightmare, the The Association of Shelter Veterinarians (ASV) came up with official guidelines of animal care, part of those being The Five Freedoms.

1. Freedom from Hunger and Thirst

by ready access to fresh water and diet to maintain health and vigor.

2. Freedom from Discomfort

by providing an appropriate environment including shelter and a comfortable resting area.

3. Freedom from Pain, Injury or Disease

by prevention or rapid diagnosis and treatment.

4. Freedom to Express Normal Behavior

by providing sufficient space, proper facilities and company of the animal’s own kind.

5. Freedom from Fear and Distress

by ensuring conditions and treatment which avoid mental suffering.

In some ways, I suppose people could say "no duh", but if it really were, then I suppose it would seem obvious to everyone, right? I'm quite impressed by how concise it is. (Obviously the larger Standards of Care report goes into specifics...) Shelter life is incredibly stressful, even in the best of facilities. Because of this, an animal can experience an array of problems as a result of stress, from behavior to medical. As a result, it's important to minimize stress and discomfort as much as possible, and only use positive reinforcement for any sort of behavior training.

I'm not saying that these standards should be applied to the TTI, since I find that industry to be fraudulent and as a result, irrelevant. (Anything but amazing) However, I obviously think that animal care has legitimacy as an industry, (although cats are forbidden from making phone calls. Dogs can, but only if they know how to "speak".  ::) )

For me, this isn't a political issue as much as it is a personal philosophy. When I first learned about this paper, it resonated with me on a few additional planes of thought and experience, (one of them being my tenure at the duckfarm, of course).

Empathy can take numerous forms, I suppose. I guess that's why I wanted to post about it.

I have no idea where to put this topic. The stuff I mention about the TTI is more of a subset than the main point.

I present, my personal favorite episode...

Michael Ellis

I believe that's the whole thing, in its entirety, as opposed to not.

(I haven't watched this particular upload yet.)

Doesn't matter. Watch the bastard anyway.

Feel free to share your favorite episodes in this thread, or outside, in some other location.

Sincerely,

TOKYO (KGO) -- The airlines will do just about anything to save a buck.

All Nippon Airlines out of Japan is asking all of its passengers to go to the restroom before they board the plane.

They have staff posted at the jet way asking passengers.

The airline hopes to save on fuel because the passengers weigh less.

If a staff had asked me to do that, I would *hope* that I would have the balls to unzip and piss right then and there.

Note to self: Don't fly on ANA.

The other day I had some vodka, but really wasn't sure if I wanted to do just shots, or mix it with something.

I was kinda sick of bloody marys, and Im not a huge fan of cape cods. I decided I really wasn't into doing shots (I reserve that for tequila), and I wanted something simple, so I looked in the fridge for inspiration..

.. not much inspiration, but I did have cherry 7-up.

Believe it or not, vodka and cherry 7-up is pretty good. Like a shirley temple with her cherry popped.

I called it "The Priscilla"

because it's gay.

Open Free for All / gamer thread. What are you playing?
« on: September 15, 2009, 02:44:03 AM »
I've been broke for a looong time. I can't afford new games. Especially since I don't have any of the third gen stuff except for the nintendo DS. My primary console is the PS2. (I hate games on the pc.)

As a result, I've been revisiting some older games for about the past year or so. What I find most interesting about this is that I intentionally never finish them on this second play through. Right about time I get to the last dungeon, I find something else.

Some of the games Ive been playing recently are:

Chrono Cross
Xenogears (otherwise known as Shut The Fuck Up and Let Me Play)
Final Fantasy 9
Harvest Moon: Back to nature
Allundra (stupid jumping puzzles)
Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne (only ps2 game of the lot.. I never finished it)
and now Ive started on Final Fantasy Tactics.. another game I never finished the first time around.

Others I will probably revisit in the near future are legend of mana, tales of destiny, breath of fire 3.. and maybe Granstream Saga. (Because I totally forgot what the gameplay is like and Im curious.)

One of these days Im going to get an SNES... and try to find some of those games I miss so much. (earthworm jim)

What's everyone else playing?  Is there anyone out there like me who has been bitten with a case of console nostalgia?

CEDU / Brown Schools and derivatives / clones / why the fuck do I have this?
« on: September 11, 2009, 01:13:26 AM »
I'm  doing fall cleaning (purging) right now, and Im almost embarrassed to share this, but it's so bizarre (for me, anyway) I felt compelled to.

I found my children's reunion toy car.

It shocked the hell out of me, because initially, I had no idea how it got into my house. The last time I saw it was probably *at* RMA on my nightshelf. Then I remembered that when my dad moved, he sent me all of my old crap he had been keeping in the basement.. most of it being stuff I brought home right after I left Idaho and hasn't seen the light of day since the 80s.

That wasnt the oldest thing I found, though. The oldest was an old matchbox fiat abarth with a hatch-style roof/windshield/door. That car and I were inseparable when I was about 9.

I tossed em both out. along with about a hundred pounds of other stuff. I have enough toys. (Although I did find all of the weapons and missile launchers for my voltron and kept those suckers for sure. Wish I had those missiles.)

What was the weirdest thing you ever found after god knows how many years? (doesnt have to be cedu-related)

Just curious.

My vote was Ok.

"my child is doing x.. do you know of a good place/program for him/her?"
"All you guys do is whine. Oh boo hoo, ya big pussies."
"I went to x, and this place saved my life."
"My name is stack jones, and Im not creative enough to do effective trolling."

I dunno what else, since Im drunk on tequila, what else, guys?

CEDU survivor = CETARD
RMA survivor = ARMtard
BCA survivor = BARNtard
All clone schools = (see CETARD)

ARMtards and BARNtards can also refer to themselves as CETARDs, or IDAtards, but RS campus CETARDS cannot refer to themselves as ARMtards or BARNtards. (and why would they want to? as the IDAtards are far inferior.)

survivors from NWA aren't allowed to call themselves anything.

Due to the fact the use of "tard" as a suffix was popular for five minutes about a hundred and one years ago, this post fails.

Regardless, I prefer it this way. It contains less self-importance. I hate referring to myself as a survivor. I survived many things... many far worse than CEDU. For example, aspirating on my own vomit as a result of trying to sleep with a belly full of vodka, sitting through lesbian porn that was made by lesbians, el nino, etc.

Open Free for All / How Yiddish can help your forum vocabulary.
« on: July 26, 2009, 10:31:20 AM »
There are many Yiddish words/phrases that I find can often encompass a feeling or sentiment, simply by the way it rolls off the tongue, that english simply cannot capture.

Here is a list of suggested terms that I feel, can contribute significantly, to any fornits thread.

drek: human shit, insincere talk (i.e. bullshit)

A chazer bleibt a chazer: A pig remains a pig.
"I see that CEDU was bought out by UHS. A chazer bleibt a chazer."

Farkakte: Dungy, shitty
"That farkakte journal  you had to take with you."

Farbrecher: crook, conman
"Diederich was a total farbrecher."

Kurveh: Whore, prostitute
(such as, "a program kurveh".)

Yentzen: To fornicate, to whore
("Go ahead, yentzen that farkakte program drek again. See if I care.") Unfortunately, I do not know how to conjugate this verb, so the usage is probably wrong, here.

Gai tren zich: Go fuck yourself

Kuck im on: Defecate on him! The hell with him!
"Psh. Steve Rookey. Kuck im on."

Vemen barestu?: Who are you kidding? (Literal: Who are you fucking?)
"You liked your stay at Tranquility Bay? Vemen barestu?"
