Sweat Lodge "guru" convicted on 3 counts!!!!!!

Looks like it didn't take the jury long either.  They started deliberations on Tuesday, came back with the guilty verdicts Wednesday.  Of course, like Miller Newton, nothing seems to stop these malignant narcissists.  Wait til you get to the last sentence.

CAMP VERDE, Ariz. — A self-help author who led a deadly sweat lodge ceremony in Arizona was found guilty of three counts of negligent homicide Wednesday.

Jurors in the case against James Arthur Ray began deliberating Tuesday after a four-month trial.

Ray showed no reaction as the verdict was read. His parents and brother sat behind him, while victims' family members and friends held hands and looked on from across the courtroom.

Prosecutors asked that Ray be taken into custody immediately, but the judge denied the request.

More than 50 people participated in the October 2009 sweat lodge that was meant to be the highlight of Ray's five-day "Spiritual Warrior" seminar near Sedona.

Three people died following the sauna-like ceremony meant to provide spiritual cleansing. Eighteen were hospitalized, while several others were given water to cool down at the scene. Prosecutors and defense attorneys disagreed over whether the deaths and illnesses were caused by heat or toxins.

Ray's attorneys have maintained the deaths were a tragic accident. Prosecutors argued Ray recklessly caused the fatalities.

Ray used the sweat lodge as a way for participants to break through whatever was holding them back in life. He warned participants in a recording of the event played during the trial that the sweat lodge would be "hellacious" and that participants were guaranteed to feel like they were dying but would do so only metaphorically.

"The true spiritual warrior has conquered death and therefore has no fear or enemies in this lifetime or the next, because the greatest fear you'll ever experience is the fear of what? Death," Ray said in the recording. "You will have to get a point to where you surrender and it's OK to die."

Witnesses have described the scene following the two-hour ceremony as alarming and chaotic, with people dragging "lifeless" and "barely breathing" participants outside and volunteers performing CPR.

Two participants — Kirby Brown, 38, of Westtown, N.Y., and James Shore, 40, of Milwaukee — died upon arrival at a hospital. Liz Neuman, 49, of Prior Lake, Minn., slipped into a coma and died more than a week later at a Flagstaff hospital.

In court Wednesday, members of Neuman's family and a friend of Brown held hands while the verdict was read.

Ray's attorneys maintained the deaths were nothing but a tragic accident, and said Ray took all the necessary precautions to ensure participants' safety. They contend authorities botched the investigation and failed to consider that toxins or poisons contributed to the deaths and called two witnesses to support that argument.

Prosecutors relied heavily on Ray's own words to try to convince the jury that he was responsible for the deaths. They said a reasonable person would have stopped the "abomination of a sweat lodge" when participants began exhibiting signs of distress about halfway through the ceremony.

Sweat lodges typically are used by American Indians to rid the body of toxins by pouring water over heated rocks in the structure.

Ray became a self-help superstar by using his charismatic personality and convincing people his words would lead them to spiritual and financial wealth. He used free talks to recruit people to expensive seminars like the Sedona retreat that led to the sweat lodge tragedy. Participants paid up to $10,000 for the five-day program intended to push people beyond their physical and emotional limits.

Ray's popularity soared after appearing in the 2006 Rhonda Byrne documentary "The Secret," and Ray promoted it on "The Oprah Winfrey Show" and "Larry King Live."

But his multimillion-dollar self-help empire was thrown into turmoil with the sweat lodge deaths. Ray ended his seminars shortly after but has continued to offer advice throughout his trial via the Internet and social networking sites.

Straight, Inc. and Derivatives / 60 Minutes video
« on: April 18, 2011, 02:25:54 PM »
I'm desperately trying to find the 60 Minutes video that was taken at Straight St. Pete when I was there.  I keep seeing snippets of it in other vids (NBC and others), but not the original 60 Minutes one.   Beth Polson was the producer....she later produced his "movie", Not My Kid.

If ANYONE has a copy of the actual 60 Minutes video, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE contact me!!!!

I saw it referenced by RTP:

Quote from: "RTP2003"
This is an excerpt from a letter by a Straight-supporting parent to the president of CBS complaining about the depiction of Straight on the investigative journalism program, 60 Minutes: (italics are added for emphasis)

"The child not only
gets the opportunity to get its life back, but also the child gets its family
back"

Note that the parent does not use the adjective "their" when referring to the horrible druggie beast hellspawn, but instead uses the term "it" when referring to children that have been placed in Straight.  To me, this may be a Freudian slip, one that is indicative of the objectification of their own children that Straight parents demonstrated, time and time again.

A very telling insight into the mind set of the program supporter can be gleaned from this one sentence, and the adjective twice used to describe the abuse victim in question.

More on Dr. Drew and Celebrity Rehab....

http://www.starpulse.com/news/index.php ... y_rehab_pu

Troubled 70's pop star Leif Garrett has prompted a war of words between himself and the producers of VH1 reality show "Celebrity Rehab" after accusing them of accelerating his 2010 drug relapse for dramatic effect.

The singer, who has been battling drug abuse for years, checked into the latest season of Celebrity Rehab in a bid to kick his habit, but in a new Los Angeles Times interview, Garrett claims producers encouraged him to relapse in a bid to boost ratings.

He says, "(The producers) asked to get some footage of me using, and I said, 'I haven't been using'. They said, 'We really have to get footage of you using.' Anyway, I was easily talked into showing them."

Scott Acord, vice president of VH1 Communications, has denied Garrett's claim, stating, "The show's producers would never ask anyone to use... PERIOD."

Garrett, 49, filmed his segments for the reality show with actors Eric Roberts and Jeremy London.

Since the show the singer has pleaded no contest to a 2010 heroin possession charge and entered court-ordered rehab.

Since the GOP being scared of teh ghey thread got derailed, I thought I'd start this one for economics in general.

I saw this (below the article in blue) in the Fark comments section regarding this article:

http://www.politico.com/news/stories/1210/46054.html

By JONATHAN ALLEN & JOSH GERSTEIN | 12/7/10 4:31 AM EST Updated: 12/7/10 12:06 PM EST

Resentments between President Barack Obama and congressional Democrats that began simmering even before their midterm disaster are nearing the boiling point on Capitol Hill, as liberals make clear that Obama’s efforts to strike a lame-duck deal with Republicans will come at a cost: open and on-the-record taunting about whether the president is a patsy.

"This is the president's Gettysburg," Rep. Jim McDermott, a leading progressive and a subcommittee chairman on the tax-writing Ways and Means Committee, told POLITICO Monday. Referring to Obama’s choice about whether to compromise or stand firm against Republicans on the question of higher taxes for the wealthy, the Washington Democrat said: "He's going to have to decide whether he's going to withstand Pickett's Charge ... I worry."

McDermott’s crabbiness — widespread among many of his fellow Democratic lawmakers — reflects a fear that Obama is being bullied by Republicans and is prepared to sacrifice large principles in exchange for paltry concessions as the two sides search for a bargain on taxes before the end of the year, an extension of unemployment benefits and a nuclear arms treaty.  (See: Obama, Republicans reach deal to extend tax cuts)

The larger reality illuminated by the unhappiness, however, is that the party that Obama two years ago proved particularly adept at unifying now has divided into two factions. (See: Democrats divided on energy bill) (See: Democrats divided on immigration)

There is a presidential wing, led by Obama, that sees it in his and the party’s interests to strike a posture of reasonable accommodation — on the theory that it is both good policy and good politics to be seen as trying to get public business done, even in a season of divided government. (See: Obama: 'The right thing to do')

And there is a congressional wing, led by liberal lawmakers and cheered on by several prominent commentators who believe in confrontation — on theories that Republicans will never bargain in good faith and that demoralized Democratic activists and the general public will both rally around leaders who draw clear lines and are willing to fight to defend them. (See: Pelosi blasts GOP on tax cuts as W.H. negotiates)

With regard to the next two years, McDermott said, "We're going to find out exactly what this president is all about.”

Obama defenders say he is simply responding to political and legal realities: If he does not strike a deal by the new year, rates will automatically rise for all taxpayers, potentially hurting the economy and putting Democrats at risk of being blamed for imposing higher costs on the middle class. (See: Obama needs nerve, perspective)

But taxes are an especially sensitive issue for Obama to ask for maneuvering room from his own party. Democrats didn't much like former President George W. Bush's tax policy in the first place, and they're furious that Obama might put his signature behind a rate freeze for high-end earners.

Even Democratic leaders on the Hill are having a hard time swallowing the idea: When House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) relayed her view of the White House's position on the tax cuts to her fellow leaders on Sunday, it was roundly panned, according to sources familiar with the discussion.

The general sentiment, as described by one participant: "What the [heck]? Could we have a little fight before we cave? Why go right to surrender?"

Outspoken Democrat Anthony Weiner of New York compared it to “punting on 3rd down — it seems the president is not seeing the value of being on [the] offense.”

Mr. President,

The United States does not negotiate with terrorists, or at least this has been the public position of the nation for decades. It is a position that has been taken by hostage negotiators for decades prior to that. It is a position that works because when a opposing negotiator takes an extremely hostile position to intimidate you into concession, capitulation to their demands only encourages more an escalation of hostile negotiation in the future.

The Republicans are acting like terrorists by taking millions of unemployed Americans hostage. They cannot pull the metaphorical trigger on their threat against these people because they will lose their bargaining chip. So when the Republicans say, "Do what we want or we will kill unemployment insurance." Tell them that there is nothing left to talk about, make them prove the conviction of their position, make them burn their bridges to re-election by throwing millions of Americans out into the cold and crashing our economy.

'It's no joke': Tiger Woods' mistress Rachel Uchitel insists her 'love addiction' is a serious problem

By Daily Mail Reporter
Last updated at 8:00 AM on 30th November 2010

Tiger Woods' number one mistress Rachel Uchitel has opened up about her emotional issues, saying 'love addiction' is no joke.

The 35-year-old revealed she went into reality series Celebrity Rehab not for booze or drugs but to be treated for long-standing emotional issues.

According to Uchitel, Celebrity Rehab doctor Drew Pinsky helped her realise that her use of drugs was just her way of dealing with her real addiction - love addiction.

I really didn't give love addiction a lot of credibility," said Uchitel. 'I thought it was a joke and it really isn't.

'I got myself into some very bad situations... some relationships that were not right for me.'

Dr Drew Pinsky  ::)  added: 'What was going on with Rachel took a while to figure out.

'Putting myself in her emotional space, when you come to terms with the amount of trauma she's had to deal with, it's very easy to understand how you desperately feel the need to fill that void.'

Teaser trailers for the upcoming series of the show reveal Rachel storming off the set after clashing with fellow cast members.

She said: 'There was a point when I got kind of upset and decided to leave.
'It was interesting to go back after the fact and know that it's a typical pattern I have.'

And she claims to have been misunderstood by the public after details of her affair with Woods was made public.

'People have called me all sorts of names, but they don’t know me,' she says. 'I am not the same as the other girls and I never ever imagined in my wildest dreams that I would be caught up in a scandal like this.

‘If things had been different and 9/11 had never happened, my life would have taken a different course. I’d be fat and happy, living in a big house in Long Island with a load of kids.

‘I’m only telling my story now so that people can discover what sort of girl I am and learn the truth about me. If they still choose to hate me, then so be it. But I never set out to hurt anyone.’

Smithsonian Museum Removes An LGBT Art Exhibit After GOP Threatens To Defund It

Last month, the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery (NPG) unveiled “the first major museum exhibition” exploring gender and sexual identity in American culture. With 105 major works by artists like Georgia O’Keeffe and Andy Warhol, “Hide/Seek: Difference and Desire in American Portraiture,” the NPG pioneered a show that “celebrates gay and lesbian art and delineates its place in the history of American painting and photography.”

But it appears that a celebration of anything LGBT-related cannot exist without inciting right-wing backlash. In yesterday’s release of its expose, the conservative CNS News complained that the exhibit featured images of “male genitals, naked brothers kissing, men in chains, [and] Ellen DeGeneres grabbing her breasts.” The report saved particular scorn for a four-minute video exhibit that included a depiction of ants on an image of Jesus. Entitled “A Fire in My Belly,” the exhibit was intended “to depict the suffering of an AIDS victim” but, instead, set off a firestorm of religious indignation and outcry over the Smithsonian’s federal funding.

After the Catholic League deemed the exhibit an “assault on the sensibilities of Christians” and demanded the government defund the NPG, the Republicans were quick to pile-on. Decrying the exhibit as an “in your face perversion paid for by tax dollars,” House Appropriations Committee member Rep. Jack Kingston (R-GA) demanded a look at the NPG’s budget, advocating for “calling them up in front of the Appropriations Committee, asking for some resignations, auditing all their budget – all their books.” The House GOP leadership seconded the outrage and Kingston’s call for a Congressional probe into the museum’s funding:

And Incoming House Majority Leader Eric Cantor, R-Va., called it an “outrageous use of taxpayer money and an obvious attempt to offend Christians during the Christmas season.”

“When a museum receives taxpayer money, the taxpayers have a right to expect that the museum will uphold common standards of decency. The museum should pull the exhibit and be prepared for serious questions come budget time,” Cantor said through a spokesman.

Incoming House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, said he condemned the use of taxpayer money for the exhibit but would not call for the removal of the exhibit.

“American families have a right to expect better from recipients of taxpayer funds in a tough economy,” Boehner said…”Smithsonian officials should either acknowledge the mistake and correct it, or be prepared to face tough scrutiny beginning in January when the new majority in the House moves to end the job-killing spending spree in Washington.”

In the face of such right-wing brow-beating, the NPG has decided to remove the video exhibit. In a statement released this afternoon, the NPG Director Martin Sullivan said, “I regret that some reports about the exhibit have created an impression that the video is intentionally sacrilegious. In fact, the artist’s intention was to depict the suffering of an AIDS victim. It was not the museum’s intention to offend. We are removing the video today.”

It is important to note that, as is common with recent GOP arguments, Republican bluster over NPG’s federal funding doesn’t actually hold water. While 55 percent of the Smithsonian budget is federally funded, those funds are only used to “pay for the buildings, the care of collections exhibited at Smithsonian venues, and museum staff.” Museum exhibits are funded solely by private donations, including “Hide/Seek.” But regardless these facts, history proves that, despite the NPG’s hope, conservative outrage will lead institutions to remove whatever is deemed offensive, regardless of what it may celebrate.

Jeff and I took the boat from St. Pete down to Sarasota for Thanksgiving....Jeff left Monday to take it down, I drove down with someone else Wednesday and Jeff had to leave Friday for work so my Dad came down Sunday to help me bring the boat back. It's about a 4 - 5 hour trip, depending on the weather and tides.  I have a trawler so she's not a "go fast" boat.   I can't explain how healing it was.  The water and boats are one of the few things that I have really happy memories about with him.  I told myself that I wouldn't bring up any 'issues' because I just miss him so much and wanted to spend some time with him without any controversy.  However, I can tell that he's changed, somewhat, his stance on Straight and rehab in general.  There were a few things he said that weren't directly an apology, but it was obvious that he has re-thought what he did and why.

I got the boat out of the slip in Sarasota on the first try and into the slip back in St. Pete on the first try....wasn't real pretty, but I did it!!  When Dad was leaving we hugged and I started crying (happy cry) and he said, "Honey, this is beginning.....not a one time thing".  I cried for about 5 minutes after he left out of sheer validation and the feeling of reconnection.  If my dad can come around, there's hope for pretty much everyone's parents.

Between the last couple of weeks with the film crew and now this with Dad, I've been on a two week high.

Just wanted to "share" (god, I hate that word but it fits here).

It's actually titled "Individual Rights and the Federal Role in Behavior Modification", which is why I'm posting it here instead of strictly in the Straight forum.  But I can't get the second part of the image to load, so go to the link to see the other side of the report.

Oh, never mind that!

Somewhere out there, an unwed mother who had 14 children may be about to collect welfare. This may not be true, but you might want to start grinding your teeth now. Just in case.

Stories about Nadya Suleman -- you know, "Octomom" -- collecting welfare are zipping through cyberspace at warp speed. Newspapers across the country have picked up the story. Almost all of them trace their routes back to the same starting point -- the gossip site RadarOnline.

How does RadarOnline know Suleman is about to go on the public dole? They asked someone. And the someone they asked is an anonymous source, one reportedly close to Octomom.

What more evidence do you need?

The source tells RadarOnline that Suleman sincerely wants to do the right thing and support her family by parading her life in front of us for our amusement, but the deal for a new reality TV show fell through.

"She was hoping for merchandising deals, but those never came through," Mysterious Source tells the site. "And she's written a book but no publisher wants it."

Mysterious Source adds Octomom may go on welfare as a result.

"Nadya will never come out publicly and say she's going on welfare but everyone close to her and familiar with her situation knows that it's going to happen very, very soon," Mysterious Source says. "She needs the money. She has no choice at this point. And she's been on public assistance before."

Suleman, herself, has told the press she wants to stay off public assistance, go back to school and get a master's degree in counseling.

Mysterious Source says that's not going to happen.

"Nadya's parents have done a lot to help her despite their difficult relationship," he or she tells RadarOnline. "But they aren't rich and they're struggling, too. Her father bought the house but he can't support her. There's just no choice. She's running out of money and those kids need to eat."

Oh, and RadarOnline also reports Suleman is behind on her mortgage payments. Again.

George Bush thought 9/11 plane had been shot down on his orders

Memoirs reveal former US president gave order to shoot down any hijacked planes before United Airlines flight 93 crashed

George Bush initially believed the only plane not to reach its intended target during the 11 September attacks had been shot down on his orders, according to leaks from the former president's memoir of his two terms in office.

Bush reveals that he gave the order for any further suspected hijacked planes to be shot down after the first aircraft were flown into the World Trade Centre in New York during the 2001 terror attacks.

He at first thought the crash of United Airlines flight 93 in Pennsylvania had resulted from this instruction, although it later emerged that passengers had stormed the cockpit as hijackers flew the plane towards the Capitol building in Washington.

The memoir, Decision Points, is due to be published on 9 November, in the aftermath of the US midterm elections, and Bush is already lined up for interviews on the Oprah Winfrey and NBC Today shows.

The Drudge Report website says the very personal book opens with the line: "It was a simple question: 'Can you remember the last day you didn't have a drink?'" as Bush deals with the well-known issue of his alcohol consumption.

His drinking has previously been said to have come to an end when he woke up with a hangover following his 40th birthday celebrations.

In a chapter about stem cell research, he describes receiving a letter from Nancy Reagan detailing a "wrenching family journey", but says: "I did feel a responsibility to voice my pro-life convictions and lead the country toward what Pope John Paul II called a culture of life."

Bush goes on to describes an emotional July 2001 meeting with the Pope, who had Parkinson's disease, at the pontiff's summer residence.

The Pope reportedly recognised the promise of science but implored Bush to support life in all its forms.

At the pontiff's funeral in 2005, Bush – after a reminder from his wife, Laura, that it was a time to "pray for miracles" – said a prayer for the ABC news anchor Peter Jennings, who had cancer.

The book is said to stay clear of criticising Barack Obama, and a source told the Drudge Report: "You will find the president strong, loving life, and ultimately at peace with the decisions he made."

Baby killed for interrupting mom's Facebook time

She told officials she shook the boy, smoked a cigarette to compose herself and then shook him again

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A north Florida mother has pleaded guilty to shaking her baby to death after the boy's crying interrupted her game on Facebook.

Alexandra V. Tobias pleaded guilty to second-degree murder on Wednesday and remains jailed.

The Florida Times-Union reports that she told investigators she was angered because the boy was crying while she was playing the game FarmVille.

The paper also reports that she told investigators she shook the boy, smoked a cigarette to compose herself and then shook him again.

She will be sentenced in December. State guidelines call for 25 to 50 years, but a prosecutor said it could be shorter than that.

A telephone message and an e-mail sent by The Associated Press to her attorney weren't immediately returned.

Texas High School Kicks Cheerleader Off Squad For Refusing To Cheer For Her Rapist
Posted by Dan Savage on Thu, Oct 21, 2010 at 8:07 AM

The American Taliban in action:

Silsbee High School in Texas wants their cheerleaders smiling, energetic, and willing to cheer for their rapists by name. Go team!

H.S., a Silsbee student, reported being raped by Rakheem Bolton with the help of two of his friends, a fellow student and athletic star. In the end, Bolton ended up getting off without serving any jail time by pleading guilty to a lesser assault charge, spending two years on probation, doing community service, paying a fine, and attending anger management courses. Hardly seems like an adequate punishment, but it's unfortunately not uncommon for attackers to bargain down their charges. What really gets the blood boiling is how the students' high school treated the victim.

Bolton was set to be on the school's varsity basketball team, and they couldn't risk losing by barring him from playing for a silly thing like a rape charge. That could impact their chances at winning. Who cares about the traumatic impact it would have an a cheerleader who needed to vocally support a team including her rapist?

But H.S. fulfilled her role as a cheerleader, participating in all the cheers for the team as a group. She simply refused to shout the first name of the man who assaulted her when he stood up alone to make free throws. It seems like she was being more than accommodating, when an student athlete facing trial on rape charges most likely should have been suspended from the team, even if his presence wasn't a source of immediate distress to his victim in her position as cheerleader. In a display of extreme disrespect for a rape survivor and disregard for her well-being, school officials insisted that H.S. had to scream "Rakheem" with the rest of the cheerleaders, or she'd be kicked off the squad.

More from Ms. Magazine:

H.S.’s parents sued the school for violating her right to free speech, but an appeals court dismissed her case earlier this month. The bizarre reasoning: “In her capacity as cheerleader, [she] served as a mouthpiece through which the school could disseminate speech—namely, support for its athletic teams.” Not cheering for Bolton “constituted substantial interference with the work of the school because, as a cheerleader, [she] was at the basketball game for the purpose of cheering, a position she undertook voluntarily.” In other words, the “work of the school” is basketball, and H.S. was obligated to put on a robotic smile and cheer for the man who had assaulted her.

Silsbee High School officials should be held accountable for their actions. Richard Bain, Jr., the superintendent of schools, allegedly ordered H.S. to cheer for her attacker. Why don’t you tell him what you think? Here’s his contact information: Richard Bain Jr., Superintendent, Silsbee Independent School District, 415 Highway 327 West, Silsbee, TX, 77656; efranco@silsbeeisd.org; (409) 980-7800
