Title: NEW BABY christening thread
Post by: Ursus on January 15, 2008, 02:39:45 AM
HOkay...  SOMEbody's got to put in the first post on the new software, it may as well be me...  ;)

So maybe this thread should also be about glitches and flummoxes and problems, too... as we all get settled in...

One thing I really like is that quoted posts are made significantly smaller.  Makes for cleaner reading.

On the other hand, there is a poorer emoticon mix, and avatars seem a little "smudgy" (at least mine is, lol).

Thanks for all the hard work, today, BTW!!!  (would put a bowing emoticon or a thumbs up, but can't find an appropriate one)

What shall I do with the links from Fornits Wiki. As far as I can see, the format of the url is different. Will various links from +200 page have to be redone?

It looks like there has been some CLIPPING of the first character in certain places, and that may in some cases screw up the link if code has been entered a certain way.

For example:  The sig for Covergaard has the first letter missing.  I've noticed that the first letter is also missing in two other people's sigs...

Perhaps the first character, namely the initial enclosing bracket for the first TAG, is missing in some of these Wiki links?

Here's another oddity: In the following post, formatting has been screwed up because the first TAG for a "list" appears to be missing.  You can still see that the closing TAG is present, however.  But when I opened up the post to correct it, the opening TAG was still there!  Just not functional or visible.  Do the BBC Codes now need an extra space in front of them to be recognized for what they are?  Curious.  Haven't changed a thing on this post (yet), in the hopes that the formatting glitch may be informative...

Forums within the Grand Three Sub-Sections (General, Tech, Behav Mod industry) are not sorting according to time/date of last post, but according to when they were originally added to the roster (I'm guessing re. that last).

Suffice it to say that these forums are following the fixed order of that little pull-down menu at the bottom of every page when you're on the threads...

The signatures for a lot of people seem to be a little worse for the move...  That might be easiest for people to change themselves, barring extreme cases.

One thing I might point out is that the BBC code for font size is apparently a little different in SMF than it is in phpBB.  This seems to have been accommodated appropriately in the thread texts during the upgrade (based on an admittedly cursory look), but not in people's signatures.

Whereas previously you could just enter a font size number as in "size=12", now you have to specify "size=12pt" (with brackets subbed for the quotation marks).

Also, I have seen the first character clipped off of most of (perhaps all of) user's signatures.  Poor Odie, who saw fit to just sign his username as his sig... His sig now reads as a less-than-friendly final word to his readers: die.    ;D

There is now apparently a size limit for posts? I got the following error message when previewing a post for Diamond Ranch Academy. The post in question is their Accreditation Report of 2005.

The message exceeds the maximum allowed length (20000 characters).

I'm not sure that chopping up the accreditation report into smaller bits is a good idea.

why can't I post when signed in?

The custom usergroups used to assign you your clever label after your name, when trasnsferred from phpbb, set your permissions to zilch.  It's reset now.

Yeah... and it shows up for moderators too.  so Whooter can't be doing his "somebody modified my post... I didn't write that" shtick...  There is a 90 second grace period, afaik, but that can be changed.

Nope... The PhpBB version of this forum is staying where it is for archival purposes.  It's locked for editing, but it's probably a good idea to keep it around (for reasons such as yours, google, and for the thousands of links to Fornits posts on this forum that would have to be somehow changed...  In short: point your browsers to www.fornits.com/smf (http://www.fornits.com/smf) from now on.

Yes.  Many of the signatures are hosed... Why, exactly? I have no clue.  But as you mentioned, it's not really possible for me to edit them all (well... maybe it is, but I don't have 20000 years to do it), so it's probably easiest for people to fix it themselves.

the smilies do suck.. badly.  So let me see if the old ones can be brought over somehow. As for the avatars, i'll see if something can be done.

Appreciate the feeback, btw.  If nobody pointed out half these things, It would take a lot longer for them to get noticed and fixed.

Lols!! Well...at least there ain't 20,000 of them!  Which, incidentally, seems to be a very popular number in use on this thread today!   ;)

I noticed that the 2nd one you transported is the old barfaroony!

There's another emoticon which never made it to the previous roster which you might also want to include.  'Tis a handsome little smilie being duly christened, so to speak.  Che submitted it in WFH perhaps a couple of months ago...

http://fornits.com/smf/index.php?topic=24100 (http://fornits.com/smf/index.php?topic=24100)

By the way, this post also exhibits the loused up formatting I noted earlier. The first TAG is rendered non-functional somehow.  Actually, I just went in to look using "quote post" and there are two first TAGs that are missing.  That post originally had a description of the code, an image of the emoticon, and a link to where it came from.  Apparently only the latter survived the software change.

This same issue has come up before during a software or ISP change. Might want to check with Kelly. It may be a fix that was specific to the (then current) software; then again, maybe not.

When my 'puter is acting crunchy, 90 seconds might be the time it takes for me to get back in that post. Hate to think of how the poor souls on dial-up are feeling about those 90 seconds... 'Tis certainly not highest priority in the world, but it might be nice to have that grace period extended a wee bit.

Okay, I just got logged out, despite opting to stay logged in "forever." There seem to be two places to opt for that, so maybe I just didn't opt for it correctly. At any rate, this happened in the middle of my posting. I had previewed once, everything looked fine, and then when I posted I got sacked with warning messages about needing to fill in my name and email. This was during my just previous post above.

So Anons now need to give an email addy and fill in some name? My guess is that the email addy does not even have to be real, but... Perhaps that issue could be clarified for us all?    :(

When you hit "Previous" or "Next" at the bottom right hand side of the page it takes you to the next "Topic" not the next page.  This may just be a different design and intended to be this way.

I have logged in 3 times and it doesnt seem to take...no messages... just not logged in.

Psy, I always include a return address.

I clicked on a link in a post, which was to another post on the forum, and clicking that link brought me back to the old forum. If I understand you correctly, you are saying that the old forum is now locked? So people would be able to follow that reference to view, but would not be able to add to that subsequent reference thread unless they rooted out it's location on the new forum?

Funny, my kids were homeschooled for a time and my house was always (still is when they're home from college) the one where all the kids hung out.  But you're probably right.  You would know much more about my life than I would.

For god's sakes can we have some background options? The new colors are making me sick to my stomach after looking at them for to long. Also re-order the forums so the more active ones are on top and the less active on bottom.

What shall I do with the links from Fornits Wiki. As far as I can see, the format of the url is different. Will various links from +200 page have to be redone?

Just hang tight for now, Carsten. I'll be trying to redirect all those links later today. Likely, it'll land up on the search page as the article and thread numbers seem to be different now. Sorry, not much to be done about that. If worse comes to worst I promise I'll help you do the grunt work of finding and linking those articles or at least buy you a werst sandwich.

As a matter of fact, yes! Next we'll be needing a couple thousand for a rack mounted server in order to move to a hosting provider that's legally and ethically better matched to our needs than your run of the mill commercial server.
Title: Re: NEW BABY christening thread - TECH question
Post by: Ursus on January 17, 2008, 05:13:02 PM
Okay, here's a techie question for those of you so inclined...  The BB Codes functional with this new software are far more extensive than what we had previous (which were more extensive than what we had before that).  After slaving away on that Diamond Ranch Academy Accreditation Report for far longer than any sane person could contemplate, I've familiarized myself a bit with the new tools.

Some things are easier to do, some things are no longer possible.  That is, unless someone could venture some info or advice?  Two specific questions come to mind at the moment:

In case there are others who also ponder these deep and soul-shattering questions, here is a LINK to Simple Machines BB Code section (http://http://docs.simplemachines.org/http://www.fornits.com/phpbb/viewforum.php?f=2.0).  The page titled Basic BB Codes (http://http://docs.simplemachines.org/index.php?topic=57) should do the trick for most purposes, but they also have other pages which go into more detail.

I have noticed some recent posts which just are not getting the visability because they are pinned down at the bottom.  What may help, until psy gets around to fixing the scrolling issue, is to link or repost any of the more interesting posts/topics into the forums up top (if they apply)....

The scrolling of the forums on the main Index, based on most recent posting activity, is something that I truly miss.

I think it really played a big role in the sense of community around here. I can't tell you how many times I've visited a forum that was not one of my usual haunts, simply because that forum popped to the top, and I wanted to see what someone had just posted there. That feature played no small part in coaxing a greater awareness in me of just how pervasive this industry is, not to mention the kinds of issues and experiences usually more pertinent to certain forums than others.

The SMF feature that shows the five most recent posts helps, but it is not the same.

Any chance that we could get our scrolling back?   :(

If you are viewing the forum using the default themes (or not logged in) you will get the "jumping around of the forum", which makes it difficult to read.  Closing the "Ban box" doesn't work because it reopens each time the page refereshes.   For those of us who don't utilize the "Ban Box" (or are banned from it) I recommend the Theme: Mystic jade.  If you set this as your default you will not have to scroll down everytime the page refreshes and the forum doesn't jump around on you.

If you like the default theme and if the post is really long you can cut-and-paste it to a word document and read it from there which makes it easier to read.

Wow... this forum has been here for almost a year and I just noticed it the other day. (It's too bad that new posts don't bump the forums like they used to.) Anyway, Teen Challenge branches are all over the place, aren't they? What is their affiliation with Straight / The DFAF again? It's creepy to know that Straight didn't die off like I thought it might have, but did just the opposite and expanded...

Why doesn’t SMF support this?    Readers are really missing out and new posters are not getting heard.

Is this a software issue? Topics within a forum bump, why don't forums on the main Index? You would think it would be a similar function, eh?

Phbbb and SMF are two completely different softwares. I wager to say that given enough time the problem will sort itself out as people become used to the new formula and accept it.

Perhaps the time has come for fornits to downsize into familiar communities.

example:

Residential TBS style groups:
Hyde
Elan
HLA
Etc.

Synanon- Wasserman
Cedu
Benchmark
Etcs.

Synanon- Sembler
Straight
Seed
KHK
Pathways
AARC

Make a general board and then place the rest of them into sub-boards under the main general board like the YLF forum is set up.

This hopefully will breed a stronger sense of community. No clue though..

Also can the YLF Forum and FQA please be moved down a few notches? This is like the 3rd time I've asked. 1 time on ban box, 1 time to ginger, and now here.

Thanxs.

Don't want to accept it. Seems a lot of other people don't either, judging from the grumbles in several different forums at this point.

Not sure that I agree with the gist of your suggestion (genuinely not sure, haven't mulled it enough), but your breakdown/grouping is intriguing for those of us interested in the evolution of this game...

Don't forget the religious fundy folk; they actually represent a sizable sector not overly featured on fornits as of yet...
