sorry to unearth an ancient thread, but i think that this is one of the most relevant things out there to demonstrate the true life of a carlbrook student.
"• Students will refrain from intimidating or threatening behavior. They will resolve
emotions and problems without violence or the threat of violence.
• Students will refrain from the possession or use of tobacco, alcohol, illicit drugs or
substances, contraband, weapons, or pornography.
• Students will refrain from sexual or intimate activities with others."
basically the three things you could do (besides running away or walking out of group) that would get you sent back to the woods.
"Students will respect and honor the School’s system of bans by refraining from
communication of any kind (including verbal and nonverbal communication) with
students on which such restrictions have been placed."
yuck. just remembering this makes me angry. there was nothing more obnoxious than trying to start a conversation with someone, and having them tell you "i'm on bans" without even looking in your direction...
"• All students are expected to actively participate in and benefit from group sessions."
i.e. if you don't talk in group you go to suspension afterwards and do not pass go.
"Students should make group requests regularly demonstrating an interest in the lives
and work of their fellow students as well as a means of taking responsibility for the
community as a whole."
"you should narc on your friends, because if you don't, they'll narc on you"
"• Movies and music that are not compatible with the general standards of the School (i.e.
those that are excessively discordant due to content that is overtly sexual, violent, drugoriented,
anarchist, depressive, etc.) are considered unacceptable forms of
entertainment.
• The School will provide all media (including movies, music, and reference and utility
media), and only such media provided by the School may be possessed or used on
school property."
quite possibly my most hated aspect of the school standards. as someone who listens to sublime and wu-tang clan, having carlbrook force its musical bile down my throat was horrifying. honestly, you can't deprive teenagers of their music and expect it to go over well, or them to not despise the system for taking away a crucial aspect of life.
seriously, if i ever am forced to hear rhianna or taylor swift ever again, i will go ballistic. :seg2:
"• Members of the other gender are not allowed in the dorms at any time."
see my point above. 17 year old have hormones for a reason.
"• All students will participate in daily dormitory cleaning and weekend deep cleaning."
no maids in the dorms here, meaning that if someone else makes a nasty mess and doesn't take care of it, better hope that it isn't your dorm job. does the prospect of cleaning soap chunks, hair, mucus, and other nastiness out of a shower drain with only a soggy towel sound appealing to you? :suicide:
"• Students will push all chairs up to tables and straighten computer tables at the end of
period."
"• Male students will be clean-shaven."
"• Students are to work exclusively on academic material in Study Hall;"
shit like this sounds pretty mundane, but remember, if you forget to do the petty things and get written up by the disciplinary committee, you get a crew, which is 45 minutes of manual labor. and crews stack up fast if you let them. i think that if you have more than 15 crews that you haven't worked off, you go to suspension.
"Males: Hair length will be no longer than above the back collar, and above the eyebrows
and above the ears. Sideburn length will be no longer than mid-ear. Hair should be styled as to not hide the eyes."
i had shoulder length hair for most of high school. guess how much i hated every haircut? :rasta:
"• All clothing will be free from rips, photos/graphics, music references and slogans that
condone or support anything outside the Standards and Honor Code of Carlbrook
School (e.g. drug references, concert t-shirts, etc.)."
i was allowed to keep all of 3 t-shirts from home. my "wardrobe changeover" to comply with carlbrook took quite an investment of money, not to mention waiting until i was actually allowed to go on a visit with my parents and shop for clothes i didn't feel painfully awkward wearing. and i'm lucky that i'm not a girl, because every morning they had to have their clothes checked off by a prefect before they could even leave the dorms.
"• Only post-Animus students may walk or jog on Carlbrook Road. There must be
a minimum of three same-gender students during the walk or jog, at least one
must be in Upper School."
obsolete rule. with the school the way it was when i was there (08-09), no group of students alone was ever, EVER allowed to go for a run off campus. too much of a risk i guess.
"• Any snowball fight during free time must remain constrained (e.g. no throwing
of snowballs at a person’s head, etc.), with all parties agreeing to take part."
this one is purely comedic. where have you ever heard of a snowball fight where people asked "can i throw this at you?" every single time? carlbrook, that's where :beat:
"• Communication (written or oral) with persons other than immediate family is
prohibited, unless explicit permission is given by the student’s Advisor."
good luck actually getting permission to write your friends, much less get responses from them.
