I guess I would define regular in HLA terms to be, once every week. Sometimes more...

I just wanted to throw out the question - why does anyone listen to FLCLCowdude?  First off, he was only a student at HLA for a very short time during which he inserted a computer mouse into his anus and ran through the dorm yelling, "I have a tail."  Second, he left so long ago, almost everything he discusses on these boards happened after he left of before he ever arrived.  His time at HLA was filled with so much ridicule from other students for sticking foreign objects into his ass, he had no time to witness all the wrongdoings he speaks of.  It just bothers me that someone who has no life and continues to use these boards long after they leave the HLA bubble can rile you all up as much as he does when he has no backup for anything he says!  Just food for thought...

Josh Rosen, is that you? Man it sure has been a long time Josh. Even though you are calling me the gay one, you were the one getting and receiving head from PK. So aren't we just calling the kettle black?

Well of course. Do you know how much shit is on the bottom of that lake? There is a bobcat down there. You can see it when the water levels get low.

As far as I can remember, the building has no sprinklers. The new building has none too, as I remember. The buildings had fire alarms, but remember, Lennie has the keys to the fire control box. Who says you can't just silence the alarms?

The Ridge Creek School / Hidden Lake Academy / More Staff Gone?

I don't think that Rachel Correl will come back for another go-round of playing nurse. Well, she did like take care of me when I was throwing up/faking illness to get off restrictions. She was a nice enough person. Then the other "Nurse", I can't even remember her name, was fired for taking kids meds. It just figures what is in Dahlonega: Rednecks, Druggies, and and Shitheads. And college students, a fuckload of college students...

It was, ASR is not a good match for everyone, not all kids will be accepted into their program.

First off, no program is a match for anyone. And saying that they don't accept everyone is bullshit. If you flash the cash, they will torture your kid. No questions asked...

Dear Parents,

We expect to hear the Judge's ruling very soon on the certification for class action. It goes without saying this has been a very difficult and devastating time for the school. We have been assured over and over from our referral base when this is finally resolved, we should fully expect HLA will resume very quickly to normal student occupancy. We are not making plans to close the school.

Much speculation, mostly instituted by students, who hoped and fully expected they would be withdrawn, and a couple of misinformed individuals perpetrated the idea, and continue today to speculate without any benefit of a knowledgeable base-in-fact, that there is a lack of adequate staff.

We are not short staffed as a few would like you to believe. We have thirteen qualified counselors; that is a ratio of 7.1 students for each counselor. Similarly, two years ago we had 16 teachers with 150-160 students...today we still have 16 teachers...that is a 6:1 student to teacher ratio.

Yes, we have lost staff, as we do every year. This is not in the least bit abnormal in a rural setting such as we are in. Young single staff in particular, become dissatisfied with the amount of social and living amenities offered within the area and make the decision to leave in favor of a city or urban area. Some of our staff come to us through the local military community, which are subject to duty transfers more now than ever and leave. Also, it was far more proficient and sound judgment, both in cost and in the level of quality to hire outside professional companies for cleaning and night security, necessitating lay-offs of those staff which accounted for a considerable amount of employees. Again, we are not short staffed. In fact we have more personnel than students.

Our sport's program is growing as always. Student's who have never participated in sports before are excelling in our sport's program. 74% of our students participate in a team sport. Off-campus activities are continuing, with our student council taking an active role in planning the events. In no way have on or off campus activities been diminished.

Summer is historically a difficult time for parents. With family vacations and general summer activities children are sorely missed. It is understandable that parents would like to have their child home early, therefore, they ask us to make academic exceptions. Doing so could seriously jeopardize our accreditation. We cannot give grades a student has not earned.

Hidden Lake has always maintained the highest of standards...that has not changed. It is school as usual. We are proud of how we have maintained those standards despite the ordeal we have been forced to go through.

We sincerely appreciate your understanding and support throughout these past eight months.

Sincerely,

Leonard Buccellato, Ph.D.

Any new news anyone?

WASHINGTON (Reuters) -- This might help explain why teenagers act like, well, teenagers.

Researchers reported Sunday that a hormone produced by the body in response to stress, that normally serves to calm adults and younger children, instead increases anxiety in adolescents.

They conducted experiments with female mice focusing on the hormone THP that demonstrated this paradoxical effect, and described the brain mechanism that explains it.

If, as the scientists suspect, the same thing happens in people, the phenomenon may help account for the mood swings and anxiety exhibited by many adolescents, they said.

"Teenagers don't go around crazy all the time," said lead researcher Sheryl Smith, a professor of physiology and pharmacology at the State University of New York Downstate Medical Center, in a telephone interview.

"But it really is a mood swing where things seem fine and calm, and then the next thing is someone's crying or angry," she added. "And I think that's why people have used the term 'raging hormones."'

Smith's team reported the research in Sunday's issue of the journal Nature Neuroscience.
Increased suicide risk

"Responses to stressful events are amplified, and anxiety and panic disorder first emerge at this time, being twice as likely to occur in girls as in boys," they wrote. "In addition, suicide risk increases in adolescence, despite the use of adult-based medical strategies."

THP, also called allopregnanolone, generally serves as a natural tranquilizer. It is not produced immediately with stress, but rather several minutes later, and calms neural activity to reduce anxiety and assist the individual in adapting and functioning amid stress.

"It's not the immediate fight-or-flight response," Smith said. "And it's thought to be one way that we all can compensate for stress, so we just stay focused and don't go crazy, sort of focus on our task."

Smith's team examined brain activity and behavior in mice before puberty, during puberty and as adults.
Claustrophobic mice

The researchers subjected the mice to a stressful event by suddenly placing them inside a plexiglass container just slightly larger than a mouse's body -- sort of a claustrophobic experience -- and keeping them there for 45 minutes.

"Twenty minutes after stress, both the young mice and the adult mice showed less anxiety. But the pubertal mice showed more anxiety," Smith said.

Further experiments attributed this increased excitability to the effects of THP, the researchers said. THP acts on brain cells via molecular doorways known as receptors.

During adolescence, mice have the usual receptors, but also extra-high levels of a second kind that brings an anxious, rather than calming, response when THP attaches to it.

"The parallel with humans is that in humans there are similar hormonal changes going on in puberty," Smith said.

"So the beginning of puberty is a time when a lot of emotions and responses to stress are increased. It's nothing new that teenagers go through a difficult time. Hopefully this will shed some new light on it."
