I'm about to place an order for 25 T-shirts if I have enough people interested. They will be $10 each, and you'd order them through me. I'm going to have to invest about $190 into this to get it up and running.
The front of the shirt will have, "I'm a POW of the Drug War." The back will be "Straight = Crooked" w/ Wes's web URL as seen in my signature below.
Depending on interest I can also have them done with just one or the other design. First, I'm just counting heads to see who'd really be interested.
Last year I made a T-shirt with the "Straight = Crooked" and Wes's website with a motorcycle guy on the front, and "Straight Inc. Survivor" on the back which was pretty cool too. I have a picture if anyone is interested in seeing it.
Just need to know if anyone's interested before I start shelling out dough for the orders.
LUV YA GROUP!

Did Straight ever make their own t-shirts? If so, wher can I get one? It would be fun to wear one while taking drugs.....
-
I have no clue, dude... I'm sure you could make one with the logo used on Don's yahoo group though. I'm not going to make shirts promoting Straight, so you're on your own! :smokin:
-
the logo used one Don's yahoo group though
There was a straight shirt with that heart on it. It said "Run for Straight" on it. I had one, and wore it with a grin while taking drugs after the program. One of my friends said that it should have been made to say, "Run FROM Straight"
There's a picture of 19-year-old me wearing that damned thing on the back of an album that our band (Reptile House) released back then..it's called Listen to the Powersoul and was released on Merkin Records, my friend's (the one who said that) label. Pretty rare, even I was without a copy of it for a long time, lol.
-
Frod, you have got to post that picture!
-
Ok, I'll scan that in asap...prob this weekend.
-
that is a cool shirt. can you get them done in, you know, girl-style t-shirts?
-
Sure can. It'll cost extra; ($2.00 to $3.00 more)
-
thas cool. how bout colors...
-
Color = extra $ too; ($2.00 to $3.00 more) I can basically have it done anyway you like, but for the $10 fee, it's plain white with the prints on front and back.
You could also send me a T-shirt to have printed for you, but I'm not exactly sure how much that would cost to have done. I'd have to talk to my printers.
-
I always liked...
I was a Pow in the war on drugs.
-
That's a good one, Sammie! I could have that on the back with the straight = crooked and web URL.
If everyone likes that I can just change it to be like that.
Thanks for the input.
-
Get a life already Morli...if I send you $2 or $3 more will that help?
-
I'm not trying to make money.

Awesome...

Okay, due to public opinion, mine included, I'm not doing the middle finger on the shirts this time around. Instead I'll use Sammie's suggestion of "I'm a POW of the Drug War" on the front with straight = crooked on the back.
Any other input would be great.
Thanks guys ~
-
aw, fuck. i was looking forward to that, although it might have limited where i could wear it? i do like the POW thing.
POW, US War on Drugs, lab monkey of the mind-fuck thugs

As much as I personally love the word, "FUCK!" I'm going to refrain from putting it on the shirt. :smokin:

I've suggested this line before but it deserves another look.
Pic of Mel Sembler :
Headline: He made millions on illegal drugs!
On other side of Shirt:
ASK ME HOW!
Caveat: Sembler may be able to sue over this use of his picture.
"I predict, Sir, that you will die either by hanging or of some vile disease."
"That all depends, sir, upon whether I embrace your principles or your mistress."

Great idea, Erinys. I don't think it would be problem using a picture of Mel, he is a public figure, and even if he weren't, he'd probably like to avoid publicity connecting him with Straight, which is exactly what a lawsuit would promote.

bumper stickers

Been done already... 85 Day Jerk made them. I have a stack of them right here. Only problem, (besides the fact that the girl on them looks like the girl from "The Ring") is that they're paper, not plastic, so they?re not permanent.

the back (http://http://espalyn.home.att.net/jpgs/rh_back.jpg).. (left to right) Alex Layne - guitar, Gary BrezeƩ - drums, Daniel Higgs - vox, Mark Strazza - sound, Joe Goldsborough - guitar

That's great. Too funny. Where can I place my order?

(from the library)
There were actually T-shirts in the original St. Petersburg program printed from 1976 until spring of 1978. They depicted a logo that had been bastardized from the Sweetheart Corporation who makes picnic utensils and stuff. Sweetheart took offense to the stealing of their logo (two capital S's facing each other to form a heart) Facing a lawsuit, all offending T-shirts were turned in and I seriously doubt any of them remain.
Morli, I will go ahead and mail you what few stickers I have left and I want a few mailed with every T-shirt sold. I think it is time for another sticker design anyway.
-
I don't know, something like this maybe? I think it would be cool if the shirt and the new stickers said the same thing. I wanted to see what people thought of the "Thousands suffered" I added too.

With the period, or without?
-
With.
-
I like without. It's easier for me to read somehow.
-
Come on! I need your votes! With! WITH!
-
Without works for my eyes too, but the period gives it a seriousness. Hmmm... Decisions, decisions. I really like the red too. It's extra cash, but I really like it. Anyway, any other thoughts about it would be great. I mean like, do you guys like it? You can definitely read it just fine. It?s a stern looking font. That font is this German sounding font, "Haettenschweiler" or something. I wonder where that came from...
I had an idea. How about the URL on the back and the statement on the front? I'd still like to use the straight = crooked thing too.
ISAC, do you approve?
-
Periods aside, I think it looks just fine as it is right now. I see no need to 'muddy the waters' with more input.. -Alex
-
I vote for the periods. Makes it clear that P.O.W. is an acronym and not a Batman graphic.
Try a font without the italics (slant). The Impact font is a good classic. I'm fond of Courier myself, but it's been done to cliche already.
Also, (cue grammar bore) the line should read "Still More Do"
PS - If you can post the name of the font you used (the actual spelling is important )I can probably give you some of its history.Just because you do not take an interest in politics, doesn't mean politics won't take an interest in you.

I really like the font in italics. That is the correct spelling. So "more still do" is incorrect grammar, huh?
-
I also thought that "more still do" didn't sound quite right.....BUT it does make sense that way. I really don't know about the correct way, "still more do." I think it should be rephrased entirely in lieu of that..

-
now this will complicate things so really should be an idea for the future not this round of shirts, but i was thinking it would be good to say it is child POWs, also that it would make an impact to say how many children have died in any of the boot camps, straights, whatever, even have a list of names schools and dates of death on a black shirt. if sticking to just Straight, the suicides. another idea was to have a picture of Bush, Sembler, Newton, Riddile or whoever and the caption could be something well someone else say what the caption could read
-
I once saw a shirt that had a long list of names in small type. It worked.
The operative idea was that a stranger close enough to read the list was also close enough to the wearer for conversation.
The disadvantage was that the shirt was unreadable at a distance.
Worked as a springboard for discussion rather than a billboardCome to the woods, for here is rest. There is no repose like that of the green deep woods. Here grow the wallflower and the violet. The squirrel will come and sit upon your knee, the logcock will wake you in the morning. Sleep in forgetfulness of all ill. Of all the upness accessible to mortals, there is no upness comparable to the mountains.

I did a "grammar check" and it told me there were no suggestions, meaning nothing was wrong. I changed it to, "Thousands have suffered, more still do."
So, I'm probably sticking with that.
Is that okay with everyone? Is anyone going to buy these if I have them made?
Do we have a memorial list of names that I could use on the back of the shirt? Would I need to get permission from each family to use them?
-
but have we got consensus on the period question?
fka
-
Haha... Shall I do a poll?
-
yeah, let's see if we can all come to agreement on this.
fka
-
My thoughts are that the problem with a memorial list of names is that there are likely 100's, maybe 1000's of names that we don't yet know about who have lost their lives after STRAIGHT. I'd hate for the unknown to go unrecognized.
-
I hear you there. I was just brainstorming on Erinys idea. I know that when I had a booth on Earth Day, people who could relate to being abused, or who worked at treatment facilities flocked to the booth. For 8 hours I talked with all kinds of people on the subject.
I was also thinking that the "POW/war on drugs" saying might be taken as a joke until a little research was done on the subject such as asking, or going to the website. But that's our point in all of this right? To have a voice, and to have people listen and respond to the fact that this stuff still goes on right now, everyday?
So I guess no matter what, it's a subject that some people will turn a blind eye to no matter what it says.
-
Hello! and I'm flattered by the recognition.
I have another thought for you. Have you ever experimented with making iron-on transfers instead of printing shirts?
There is heat transfer paper available that can be run through a standard printer.
Cheaper and easier to haul around than shirts, plus folks can put it on whatever they like.

How about those sew-on patches? (the ones that they issue in the military & available at surplus stores)
-
If I just pay the set up fees and the print fees, you guys could send me a shirt to print and I'll send it back! That would be the cheapest route. I'll find out next week what that would cost per shirt. Shipping is extra but just a few dollars.

THAT would be hilarious! And what fun in the design session! I'll start.
Uniforms cut and tailored in the style of military cammies, but made of wild Op Art fabric. (you know, the black and white swirls, checks, zig zags that make your head spin) The correct footwear would be either Doc Martens or sandals with (bright red) socks.
The uniform would be complete with a bowler hat worn tipped over one eye (like Alex in A Clockwork Orange).
Anyone else?

Now, Earth Day is soon, and I need to know if people will actually pay for these if I have them made. Right now theoretically I have about 6 called for. Froderik, what about you?
Also, as much as I appreciated the idea, I'm not making them myself this year. I just don't have the time. So they'll be professionally done. I'm still considering changing the font to more of a newspaper or typewriter font.
Erinys, your design wins it looks like. I think it was perfect anyway. Would we have the crotch guards, though?
