Nice bike, started riding again this year and enjoying it when I have the time.  Went to a nice HD open house the other day in spite of me riding a Jap sportbike and had a great time.  Remember rubber side down and have fun.

I was in the same boat, my mother and I didn't get along... so off to Straight with me.  Unfortunately for me I spent months in the program eventually falling in line with their "dry druggy" tag on me.  This is of course after weathering the "you're full of S" storm for an extended period.  I was a big risk for chemical dependancy was the end conclusion... throw some extreme sarcasm on that one.  

Anyways, I copped out and dropped at the first chance on second phase as I had planned.  This was after dropping the inside dope to my mother and she withdrew me the day after taking the Midnight Express... in spite of our horrible relationship.  A relationship that would only be stable when I got to be an adult btw.

As I remember it my mother had a real time with the Straight charges herself... she had placed my sister in the program sometime after me.  Someone was getting paid pretty good and from the look of things it wasn't the local staffers.  It sure wasn't spent on us either!!!

I was going to get braces... that's my story that landed me in Straight.  I wasn't even a user... go figure.  I would smoke pot and get drunk after Straight, but I can count the instances on my fingers... not that many.  

Anyways like you my family life remained disfunctional soon after Straight.  My mother even kicked me out and I slept under a friends bed until his mother learned I not only wanted to spend the night, but I just couldn't go home.  She let me sleep on the couch until the police came and told my mother she could be in trouble since I was like 14 years old.  

Soon thereafter I found myself living in a foster home.  The foster home was really a work camp as the guy was a tobacco farmer.  His brother hired Mexicans, but Mr. G had it figured out... take teenage boys and get paid by the Dept. of Social Services and get farm help to boot.  He also had horses which we were also responsible for.  

"It's a wonderful life" wasn't a thought that came across my mind to often during my teen years.

Straight, Inc. and Derivatives / Where are the children?

My six year old daughter is outside as much as she can be.  She does get bored when none of her friends are around, but she stays pretty active.  Sorry but fishing isn't her bag, she'd rather play "pretend" or ride her bike.  She does crash in the house for a DVD here and there of for a little Nickelodeon, but she is pretty active.  

I know what you mean about the older kids though, they must be in hiding.  They just don't play like when I was a kid, I was out from dusk to dawn if at all possible.

I know what you mean about the drug lists, at some point it almost became a hip thing to have the best string to rattle off.  I remember one guy had to "get honest" that he had never shot up with heroin. I guess you would have had to be in Straight to understand the need or desire to do make up something like that.

With some people I could have swore they thought sharing a wild sexual story was some sort of epiphany.  It was a whole other world behind those doors  :shrug:

I guess that's something I always enjoyed watching...
Newcomer first week: "I haven't done any drugs...honest!!!!"
Newcomer in two weeks: *Sob "I've done alcohol and pot
Necomer in a month: *Tear "I've done alcohol, pot, cocaine, heroin, prescription drugs..yadda yadda yadda and had relations with my dog."
Newcomer in two weeks: "I'm coming hOME!!"
Now 2nd Phaser: I've got to get honest, I've never had relations with my dog."

I was only in for about 4-5 months but I heard all kinds of twisted stuff...

I heard about incest, beatiality, masturbation, rape and so on.  I was in the eighth grade and sex wasn't all new to me, but I learned a few things for sure.  

I remember at the screamfest we had every week one 4th phaser got blasted because someone had noticed a sticky substance in the shower after he got out.  They blasted him for a bit and I think he finally confessed, the dirty lil bugger.

There was another guy who was so FOS it wasn't even funny.  We're not talking drugs FOS, he was just in another world.  His name was Tom and according to him he was the foremost Karate instructor in the world.  I'll never forget his demonstration of the technique "Monkey grabbbing the peach".  Or the time we had a night to rock out, do skits and whatever... he got his ass kicked by a guy who was a green belt in a little sparring match.  Oh yeah... he said he gave himself oral or tried to.

Overall I do have some good memories in spite of the horrors of Straight Inc.  I was not a drug user when I went in which was tough as some of you could imagine.  Those that believed in me and supported my stance were "rays of light" if you will.  I guess I couldn't blame the people who didn't trust me, there were many people who came in with my story... only to reveal a "drug list" after "getting honest".  The only thing I needed to be honest about was coming from a horribly disfunctional family and being full of hate, anger..(pull some other feeling out the air) LOL.  Some of you will find this strange, but my drug and way of burying all of my pain was in sports, that never was a popular statement.

Other things I enjoyed were some of the other Straighlings, two that come to mind were Andy and Aaron.  Andy was probably my favorite person there, he would often tell people, "Dave doesn't have a drug problem, he doesn't need to be here."  With most everybody telling you're full of shit, that was something much needed to keep my head straight.  Another guy who would drive us to a host home I stayed at for a while reminded of an close Uncle of mine who always makes me laugh.  

Other things I enjoyed were host homes related.  One host home had an interesting travel through Wash. DC, which we sometimes pass hookers.  Being an early teen in a repressed environment, seeing hookers was pretty exciting.  This particular home had a sibling who was into freestyle biking and some skateboarding, which was fun to watch out the window.  Any source of entertainment was welcomed.

There was one other home in a rather ritzy neighborhood who had a daughter in the program.  Being on first phase was tough to communicate with them, but they wanted me to tell them how their daughter was doing... behind the oldcomer's back of course.  I felt like a part of their family and the mom would make me some special requested food items, like Lasagna...YUM!  

Another thing I enjoyed was when the ex-Straightlings who were disgruntled would hang out by the exit from the parking lot.  I can remember being told to ignore them and not make eye contact... but I did.  Funny stuff now that I think about it.

Other things I learned that may be beneficial is how to better express myself and understand the reason why people use drugs to begin with.  I think those are good things.
