Title: Ridge Creek "School" - Trouble Retaining Professional Staff?
Post by: Dysfunction Junction on January 07, 2011, 09:36:56 AM

It appears that RCS is currently operating without these positions filled.  I can't really understand how it can be run without key personnel such as:

Academics Director
Counseling Director
Headmaster
Special Ed Teacher
etc.

I suppose when the it's actually the inmates that run the show there (see DHS reports about dangerous understaffing by untrained personnel, rapes, beatings, etc) RCS doesn't need these people.

Its a sign that the school is growing and doing well.  Our local hospital is looking for several doctors, nurses and a head of neurology.  If RCS was laying off people than it would be a bad sign but as businesses grow they branch out and hire more people so that each person does not have to wear several hats.

In small businesses sometimes the owner serves as the director of each department and his employees wear several hats etc.  Then once the business gets established, and is more profitable, they hire people to fill these positions and the owner steps back and takes on a more global position of running the company.

They're operating without three "honchos":

Academics Director
Counseling Director
Headmaster

How can they operate without properly credentialed people in these positions?  The short answer is "badly" as they have always operated.

Sadly enough, the inmates run that jail anyway and according to parents who put their kids at RCS, the promised academics, therapy and medical attention aren't given anyway, so I suppose they can save money by not having figureheads in these positions because they don't provide the services, so why bother having someone be director of a department that doesn't do anything.

They are obviously doing it, DJ.  The place is still open for business and growing if they can afford to hire dedicated people to head these departments.  Sometimes the owner will wear the hats of all the department heads until the business becomes profitable enough to hire permanent staff.  I think this is a healthy sign for RCS.

Lets say the head of academics at Yale dies of a heart attack.  Do they close the school?  Are the kids getting less of an education?  Should they charge less money until they hire a new department head?

Businesses have contingency plans which allows them to continue on.  Its a sign of a good business.

They had people in these positions previously.  They left RCS.  Now they are operating without them.  Let's not try to make it too confusing, shall we?

Parents should know that RCS has no Academic or Counseling director, nor do they have a Headmaster.  Obvioulsy the people who held these positions before left abruptly, as there was no orderly succession.  Right now they are operating without these people and some of these positions have been open for months.

That means if you have a kid at RCS, no qualified person is running the show in these areas.  Parents should be aware of this fact.

This parent explained the symptoms of not having professionals on staff at RCS:

Do your homework. We sent our son here on a recommendation from a consultant. After six weeks we pulled him from the "school." The school promised a lot and delivered little. Our son was put into a study hall type classroom to "catch-up" on his chemistry. He had not taken chemistry yet, so it was unclear as to how he was going to "catch-up" on his own. The sports consist of the boys shooting hoops. The soccer field and tennis courts are not maintained. I had to purchase a ten dollar football at Walmart, so the boys could play catch. The kids sit around like couch potatoes. Prescribed medication is either not given as prescribed or in our case was terminated without informing us to get our consent. Lastly, we have not received the tuition refund, so now we have to hire a lawyer. Please Google "Hidden Lake Academy" - the name of this school prior to their bankrupcy in May 2009.

Good advice, Susan.

Then they need to fill in the void until they find permanent replacements.  It takes time to do interviews and find the right candidate.  There are many options available to them.  They could contract the positions out to local professionals, have a temporary independent contractor come in, the owner could step up and fill in some of the missing pieces.  So they may already have these positions filled temporarily for now until they find permanent people.

I think the positive point is that the school is expanding and growing instead of laying off people.  In this economy it is a good sign for the industry.

Our suspicions have been confirmed:

Quote from: "DEE"
These positions, along with a number of others, are vacant because those who held them previously feared for their personal saftey, as well they should. No one, to my knowledge, is still working at Hidden Lake/Ridge Creek who was there a few years ago, or even one year ago. My prediction is that those they hire to fill these positions will not be there one year from now, unless they are all former corrections department employees who are used to dealing with dangerous criminals.

Our resident RCS shill has been caught red-handed lying yet again about RCS.

So, we're looking at about a 67% turnover for "professional staff" (several of the above-listed wouldn't qualify for those positions in the public sector or legitimate private sector facilities) from last year.  Thanks, Jill.

We don't know the turnover rate of the line staff, but I suspect it's probably higher because they have to work in the same dangerous environment for near-minimum wage.  As DEE said before, most fear for their safety, so RCS would have to increase pay substantially to retain line staff in the detention center.

Whooter - we're talking about human lives, not a car. There's a big difference. We're also talking about positions that are essential for a legitimate facility. These positions are revolving doors because once someone gets hired on there they realize what a farce the place is and they leave. Or, as rumored, get sexually harassed by Bucci and then given some hush money.

As for small businesses, do some research and find out how many small businesses sued Bucci for non-payment and these occurred when HLA was "thriving". Find out how many businesses he ruined....

BTW - have you ever read all the rules and regulations from Georgia's ORS as they relate to a child caring facility? You might want to some day so you can speak intelligently to those rules and regulations.

Guest3, thanks for your insight.  Your response has been confirmed by DEE as well.  These positions are revolving doors as you say, not only because people realize RCS is a farce, but also because they actually fear for their safety as well.

Oh, I didn't miss that little gem there, Jill.  Are they taking weekly boarders that are just regular kids or do the DJJ inmates get to go home on weekends?  It seems it is probably the latter because the paying kids come from all over the country.

Maybe it's like "doing weekends" in reverse??

On second thought...Chris Grimwood does not meet the defintion of "professional staff".  He lists an MSW from Farington University in his CV, but Farington is a diploma mill.  This explains why RCS removed the MSW reference from his profile.

From Farington University's website:

Quote
I understand that Farington University is an on-line life experience institution that awards documents based on information submitted by student and there are no tests and coursework necessary for successful enrollment and completion of any program.

This is the disclaimer you have to recognize before continuing to "register".

"No tests and coursework necessary"

Ridge Creek parents...you have been ripped off!  Chris Grimwood is a phony social worker with no degree.

Dear Parents,

It is important that we take a minute this afternoon to update you on a situation that occurred this weekend.

We went into the weekend with an unfortunate position, where as a company we needed to delay providing our staff pay checks.  We currently have over $150,000 in uncollected tuition, which in combination with the economy has placed us in a difficult situation.  There are plans in place for staff to receive these checks this Thursday, the 20th.  We continue to have a core staff dedicated to the work being done with your children and the execution of the mission and vision of Ridge Creek School.  The students, through whatever means, became aware of this situation and orchestrated a plan to create chaos and disruption on campus at lunch on Sunday the 17th.  16 students, simply stated to staff, “F-you, there are 45 of us and 7 of you,” and proceeded to walk out of the lodge.  Our shift leader notified me, who called in an additional 7 staff to campus.  We are blessed at Ridge Creek School to have the number of staff who live on campus and locally as we do.

What originally started as a student walk out ended with four students being charged by the Lumpkin County Sheriff’s Office after having broken windows on campus.  Many of the students involved quickly settled back into the program upon the arrival of additional staff and were found to be in more of a follower role.  A staff meeting was held this morning in which the incident was reviewed an each student staffed.  The students behind orchestrating the event are being dismissed from Ridge Creek School due to the severity of their actions, most of which were new students into Ridge Creek.  Student safety continues to be our number one priority, and we will continue to make whatever decisions are necessary to ensure that your children remain safe and are provided the opportunity to be surrounded by positive students and given the ability to make good decisions.

On that note, I want to take a moment to recognize the 29 students who had no involvement in this incident.  These students truly showed their true character in a time of need, during which they followed staff directions, were supportive of peers and worked to provide a calm in an otherwise chaotic situation.  One tearful conversation that truly sticks out was between members of our basketball team, in which they were worried they would have to forfeit the season due to the actions of some of their players, during which other students volunteered to join the team “even though I am not that great,” to ensure that they are able to complete the season that they have worked so hard in.  It is this character that is the true character of a Ridge Creek School student.

I am sure by this point all parents are wondering where their child fits into this incident.  Those parents of involved students were all notified yesterday of their child’s involvement.  For the remaining parents, however, I am certain that you will hear all about it from your child via email and during your call this week.  The students were in the dormitory while this happened, and only have limited information as to the actual details.  It is understandable that they will want to discuss the “excitement”, however it would be more beneficial to discuss what characteristic they used when faced with the decision to join in or not, and how they were supportive while this was occurring.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me, and I will do my best to respond within a timely manner.

Take care,

Chris Grimwood, MSW

Executive Director

Ridge Creek, Inc.

706-864-4730 x2206

Yea, I would say it is due to the fact that they are not getting paid.

Another web  - According to the State, Chris Grimwood is current at RCS.  So, unless he is doing double time between both schools, someone is fabricating.

I find it strange that Jeff Holloway from another school  Branon Hall which ran HLA  has now moved on to Branon Hall has now hired Chris Grimmwood
to move over to his school....Does anybody have an explanation   to this.  How strange is this coincidence ??????  Guess that they continue to cover themselves.......

According to the State...Chris Grimwood is current at RCS.  According to Brandon Hall, Chris Grimwood is not there.  There are people dedicated to child advocacy, child safety, TRUTH, FACTS, and DOCUMENTS that back up allegations.

So, which is it?

It appears that Chris Grimwood, and his $89 degree, is still at Ridge Creek, or at least not at Brandon Hall which I confirmed by calling them today. If he is still at RC, he must be there by himself judging from the want ads.

We at Ridge Creek are privileged to announce the addition of Cheryl Tatangelo to our counseling team. Cheryl is a licensed counselor and will be the Assistant Director of Counseling. Cheryl brings 15 years worth of valuable experience in counseling and therapeutics to her position at Ridge Creek.

Cheryl earned a BA in Psychology at California State University in Bakersfield, CA and a MS in Professional Counseling at Georgia State University. Cheryl has spent the majority of her career working directly with families, adolescents and children in crisis.

She is an innovative and creative counselor, adept at developing individual interventions that best suit the needs of each student in order to move them in the therapeutic direction that is most appropriate to their particular issues and struggles.

In her spare time, Cheryl enjoys playing with her rescue pets, Flower, a Terrier mix and Nicki, the cat. She also enjoys water sports, hiking, reading and visiting with her extended family.

Anne Edens has just been hired to replace Cheryl Tatangelo

INTERNS  -This is frightening....see below.

It appears the corporation has figured out a way to get inexpensive help.  Do the representative schools sending the interns to Ridge Creek School have insurance?  Perhaps these schools should have their attorney dissect the Ridge Creek, Inc. insurance policy.

I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself to you and provide some insight and information regarding my background and experience. Please contact me directly at any time to answer questions you may have. I am the new Director of Counseling for Ridge Creek School. In this position, I will supervise and support the staff of five counselors and four interns in their work with our students. I am replacing Cheryl Tatangelo who in no longer with the school.I come to Ridge Creek with over 30 years experience in mental health. I hold a Doctor of Psychology from Baylor University in Waco, TX, a Master of Science in Community Agency Counseling from The University of Tennessee in Knoxville, TN, and a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from the University of Georgia, Athens, GA. I am a Licensed Clinical Psychologist in the state of Georgia.

I worked in private practice for the past 16 years where I focused on children, teens, and their families. In particular, I worked with a large number of children in the foster care system as well as later age adoptees. As a result, I garnered a reputation for being an expert on issues related to Reactive Attachment Disorder and other issues related to child neglect, abuse, and abandonment. I also specialized in assessing and treating children with ADHD, helping them and their families develop effective adaptations to cope with the challenges of living with that disorder. Additionally, I have extensive training and experience in working with victims of trauma, including EMDR and Prolonged Exposure Therapy.

As a therapeutic boarding school, Ridge Creek School offers an intense all-around therapeutic program featuring college preparatory academics along with individual and group therapy that teach students life skills to help them not just survive but thrive. Our academic program is recognized and certified by regional accrediting agencies and provides as closely as possible the curriculum and activities provided by a traditional boarding school including a wide variety of sports.

Our clinical program is comprehensive and intensive, utilizing Masters level therapists to address the emotional, behavioral and addiction needs of the students and their families. The structured individual and group therapy as well as adherence to a strong 12 Step program teaches at risk, defiant teenagers how to deal with behavioral and situational issues. However, more importantly, our program helps at risk teens develop insightful thinking and the skills needed to carry them throughout life.

In addition, we are a training site for interns from a variety of programs, including doctoral Clinical Psychology students and masters Counseling students as well as Recreational Therapy students.I am very excited to be a part of the Ridge Creek team and am committed to providing excellent services to our students. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions about our program.

Ridge Creek School is a co-educational, college prep, therapeutic boarding school with "a wilderness twist." Students participate in a college preparatory academic curriculum during the week and experiential education and outdoor leadership activities each weekend. In addition, students take part in weekly individual and group therapy, three times a week with Master's level therapists and counselors.

RAD is a bit of a red flag, don't ya think? That's what former HLA employees, who fled that coop for the greener pastures of CALO, now seem to "specialize" in.

Ridge Creek would like to welcome a new addition to our wonderful team! Keith Bishop has joined us as our new Program Administrator. He brings many years of valuable experience to our school and we are excited to have him join us.

Keith comes to Ridge Creek School from Eckerd Outdoor Therapeutic Program where, having served as Facility/Program Director and Master Counselor. Keith is a natural leader, who brings focus and innovation to all career endeavors, as can be seen by his many achievements and commendations earned while serving in the Air Force. While his primary focus here at RCS will be facility operation and organization, he is an avid outdoorsman, who is dedicated to developing the wilderness recreation curriculum at RCS. We are delighted to have his expertise as an addition to our talented staff."

Here is where another problem exists.  According to the ORS, Ridge Creek Wilderness OCCI is not operational.  It would seem that Ridge Creek, Inc. needs to change their marketing or inform the ORS ... or not, in which case ... business as usual.

Yes, that Reactive Attachment Disorder ahem *expertise* is a big red flag, so is the EMDR. 'Effing trauma feng shui is what that little windshield wiper trick is. Prolly’ tosses in some EFT w/ that too…they tend to. Hmmm, just wondering how well some meridian tapping would go over in a situation with a client that actually happens to have RAD… rather than how it goes on those disappointingly adolescent pound puppies that have simply been labeled as such and were sent to the bizarro world returns department known as residential treatment for institutional abuse and neglect survivors.

Citing integrity, it appears certain staff had an epiphany and could no longer tell parents to send their children to Ridge Creek School.  Integrity?  Keeping ones mouth shut and leaving the children behind does not absolve you in any way, shape, or form.

They also failed to mention that three students walked off campus and went missing on the day of the 16th. A lot of things go unreported there.

"A lot of things go unreported there."    So if there were over sixty - 911 calls in two years, including EMS, how many incidents managed to stay in house?

Did it ever dawn on those staff that have left RCS  because of their "integrity" that the honorable action to take is to offer a reality check to the ORCC?

Chris Grimwood is gone along with his bogus MSW.   He served his purpose well.  His letter was classic, Charlie Sheen-esque and what a way to go.

Clay Erickson has been gone for awhile, along with his MD that he will never again be forced to "use," because it is "good for marketing."  Clay has a kind heart and many more than not, wish him well.
