"How to Save a Life" is an alternative rock song by Colorado-based rock band The Fray. It is the title track from their debut album. It was the follow-up single to the top 10 hit "Over My Head (Cable Car)" and peaked in the top 3 of the Billboard Hot 100 chart in the United States. The song has sold over 1,000,000 downloads, and has been certified Platinum by the RIAA. It is the band's highest-charting song to date, topping the Adult Top 40 chart for 15 consecutive weeks and topping the Canadian Airplay Chart.
According to lead singer and songwriter Isaac Slade, the song was composed and influenced by his experience while working as a mentor at a camp for troubled teens: "One of the kids I was paired up with was a musician. Here I was, a protected suburbanite, and he was just 17 and had all these problems. And no one could write a manual on how to save him."
Slade claims that the song is about all of the people that tried to reach out to the boy but were unsuccessful. As Slade says in an interview, his friends and family approached him by saying, "Quit [the problem behavior] or I won't talk to you again," but all he needed was some support.
The verses of the song describe an attempt by an adult to confront a troubled teen. In the chorus, the singer laments that he himself was unable to save a friend because he did not know how :(

"On the turning away" by pink floyd is my preference regarding songs of that nature.
Quite a bit more optimistic.

Great song, became a hit when it was played alot on Grey's Anatomy and alot of people call it The Grey's Anatomy song.

Alot of the hits were on the Grey's anatomy version
Isaac Slade might be someone Psy might consider contacting, if it moved him to write a song, he might back up Psy's cause, a bit of celeb status carries soooooo much weight
Great song, sad circumstances as to why it was written

I agree, no need to create a 'new floyd' when they're immortalized already..
The problem is exposure TO it.
And I don't mean a CLONE of them at any rate. I mean filling their role, so to speak.
TOOL could do it but I don't know if they want to go that route with their music. If 10,000 days is any indication, they might. Who knows?

I am prolly going to be howled down but radio head IMO beat pink Floyd. Although I will never forgive Chris martin for marrying the vacuous Gweneth I think Coldplay are a decent second.

You mean (I think) How far is Heaven - Yeah I like that one too. I do think it is apt for the kids who have been in one of these places. I prefer the Salvadore version. But I have always maintained that 'On the Turning Away' would be a good anthem for the advocates. Its only possibly flaw is its mellowness - but thats part of what I like so much about it.

Its a mellow presentation but its not "mellow". I'd say upbeat but solemn.
