Post by: CCM girl 1989 on March 07, 2006, 11:26:00 AM
I saw on the news that a 16 year old stole a car and went on a high speed chase. Cops finally put down the spike strips. They said he was from a detension center, and he was nabbed on HWY 80?

Does anyone have anymore info?

He escaped from an 'alternative' juvenile detention center:

Teen Leads Troopers On 275 Mile Chase
(KUTV) TOOELE COUNTY A high speed chase through two states ends in Utah?s west desert. The chase started in Winnemucca, Nevada. Utah Highway Patrol troopers picked up the chase once it crossed into Utah at Wendover.

The chase went on for 275-miles along Interstate 80 through Nevada and into Utah. The teen fugitive reportedly escaped a juvenile detention facility in Winnemucca and stole a car in a nearby parking lot.

Once the teen crossed into Utah, UHP troopers tried to do what they could to stop him.

?We deployed spikes at the number 2 mile marker. They missed him, and we deployed spikes at the 40 mile marker where we did get him,? said UHP trooper Jeremy Floyd.

The spike strips were able to begin slowing the driver down. The fugitive pulled over once, and then sped off again, making it another mile or so. The chase finally ended at on I-80 at Utah?s mile marker 43.

Troopers said they were able to take the teen into custody without resistance. They also said the 16-year-old seemed like and experienced driver.

?When he'd get close to other cars he'd slow down to about 70-75,? said Floyd.

Speeds reached 100-miles-per-hour a few times in the long chase. Fortunately no one was injured.

No word from the detention facility about just how the teen escaped, but UHP officials said the fugitive was raised in the Salt Lake area, and was likely trying to get back to family in the valley.
