I have an ex husband that went through the adult program about a year ago to avoid jail.  He just got busted again and his attorney is going to try and have him sent there again.  It's a fanatical religious program.  From what he told me they go around doing various jobs (car detailing, handyman stuff) and all the money goes to the program.  They get donations of money and goods.  Tons of food, household stuff, toiletries and most of it goes in the front door and out hte back into the cars of the 'counselors'.  I'll see what more I can find out if he ends up back there.  I have a feeling he's going away this time though.

Oh hell, yes. It's a disgustingly pervasive franchise, with a lot of political muscle and money behind it. But you know that already.

Man, you got me all wrong! As long as there's an interest sufficient to support a reasonably healthy conversation, I'll do it. Oh, and I'm not a he I'm a she.

Great Blog.
 :D
We have Teen Challenge here. I am not even sure if it is a live in program. It is pretty small and has always recieved fairly minimal govt funding. As far as I am aware participation is totally voluntary. Most of it is conselling with an element of religious zealotry.
There is one residential place in QLD but there is minimal info available on it. I wonder if it runs on the same model?

Oz Girl-  Yes- people can be court ordered to Teen Challenge in the U.S.  I have posted some proof that courts in the U.S. are sentencing on my web blog at:
http://http://teenchallengecult.blogspot.com/2007/03/proof-that-courts-are-sentencing-people.html

They are pdf files so you will need to use either adobe reader or foxit reader to view them.
Title: An inside perspective
Post by: been there on May 31, 2007, 10:01:17 AM
After reading so many post I felt I had to respond.

First of all, most of the clients at Teen Challenge are there because they have tried and failed at many other forms of recovery.  Usally Teen Challenge is a "last resort".  Other treatment facilities cost thousands of dollars and last only a month or two, whereas Teen Challenge is a long term theraputic community, and the cost is miniumum to the client. Of course they are raising money at all times.   How do you think they remain in operation?  They do not recieve insurance  and rely mostly on donations.  You try and run a program like that.  It's not easy.
The couselors are paid at a very low level.  They are generally working there because they either have gone through addition themselves or are willing to sacrifice to help additions overcome.

Is it a perfect program?   No, there are quite a few things that could change. But when former clients critize the program becasue it is religious in nature that seem rididuous.  Or that you have to work while there, that is also ridiculous. So many men were homeless, or in jail, or without the support of family or friends  by the time they arrived at TC.  Dont through out the baby with the bath water.
