Title: Straight in Plymouth MI.
Post by: 2dogs on February 26, 2003, 01:17:00 AM
Just thought I would check and see if there were any fresh lurkers from Plymouth hell wondering when to jump in.  Or any old lurkers. Who is still hanging around?  What's up? I know there's got to be more than 8 of us poor MI bastards.

I was there 88-90. I get all shaky every time I look at this website. I can't believe I'm still this scared of something I know can't hurt me again.

No, he graduated in 1992 (I think- dates are kinds blurry) a few months before it moved.  His name is Brad Otto.  His intake was in july 1990.  My name is Linda.

Straight changed to Pathways sometime between 92-94. Not sure the exact date. They switched buildings and changed names, but brought the same staff over to the new place.

Sorry I didn't respond sooner- busy, busy.
Brad was in Straight for almost 3 years.  He relapsed when he was a 4th phaser, so he had to start over.  As a sibling, it's hard to say how things really were, but for me, the experience wasn't too bad.  I really liked having the phasers at our house on the weekends, and since I was 18, I had some of the adult responsibilities, which felt like I was contrubting.
I've since asked Brad how it really was and he said there were bad times, and good, but I know he wasn't telling the whole story.  He doesn't act like someone scarred for life though, so maybe he escaped some of the really bad stuff.  (BTW: even though I never experienced any of it, and had an ok time, I can believe it happened- when I describe Straight to others, the word 'cult-like' comes up often)

12+ years later, Brad is doing really well.  He has had a good job since HS and is now married to a wonderful lady and they have a 1 year old son.  He went through a period where he was dating this horrible, crazy chick and he wasn't a nice person when he was with her.  I often wondered if he was using, but he insists no- she was a bitch, so she made him crazy.  Ok, I'll buy that.  Now he has some medical problems, but they're under control and he and Deb have a nice life together.  He doesn't generally drink, but from time to time he'll have a beer and does just fine.  (ex: he drank at his wedding)

I had often thought that Mom and Dad overreacted by putting him in Straight.  But on the other hand, I also remember how awful things were before that, and I wonder how much worse it would have been.  I mean if he's hitting me with 2x4's and pulling knives on me at age 14, what would happen later?  It's hard to say whether or not he would be the same person now. How did he escape the abuse that some people suffered?  Or, how is it he's not scarred by it?  I wonder...

Here's a picture of Brad and his family: Brad, Deb and Dominic (http://http://pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/lippysyd/detail?.dir=6cc9&.dnm=953d.jpg&.src=ph)

For a while we kept in touch with some people; Len Noe, Chris from Pittsburgh, and Rob Wolfe, also from Pittsburgh.  My mom gets letters occasionally from Len Noe's Mom and I guess he's also married with kid and doing well.

Ok, I'm not anonymous anymore.

I forgot to add that Straight changed to Pathways about 6 mos after Brad graduated.  He quit aftercare rather than going there.

Good to hear your brother is doing good. i understand what he means about the good and bad times. I made some close friends while there and had some really great host parents. This influenced my decision to stay in the program. I was convinced that if I left my friends would have nothing to do w/ me. Plus I was living not far from the bldg. out in Canton and made so many cool friends at school that it just became my new life. It was hard when I had to move back "home" and start all over. My mom moved to a new city and I had to go to yet another school. I moved back to the area 2 years after graduating the program. Back home was no longer my home. Anyways, I have got back in touch w/ friends from my program and it's been wonderful.

Glad to see you came back and posted. It's always nice to see Michigan people come around.

Damn Dan must have been in there for a hell of a long time because he was in the program with me.

Dan either copped out or got pulled several months before I got out.

I remember Jeff Pelon, didn't he date Gene Keyser's little sister Julie for a while after Straight?

I think Dan graduated shortly after I got there.  I also remember a guy named "Dee", kinda goofy and awkward.  I remember two brothers who had to wear ace bandages around their forearms to cover tatoos.   My memory is terrible but here is everone else I can think of... Rob Meesig, ?Lauden, Len Noe, Donnie something, ? Rowe, some guy from Holly, MI and his house had a lot of land so you could go snowmobiling if you were on 4th phase or something because you were still on the property, Neil Mattson, Chris Fisher, Tom something who wore glasses and lived in Canton I think, Brad Otto, twin sisters from Portage, some guy from Paw Paw, MI, Allen somthing.  Sorry, my memory is so bad because I've been blocking that whole part of my life out for the past 15 years.  This is really the first time I've seriously tried to remember any of it.

Did Dan graduate?? He was there when I first got put in, I heard gossip about him from a friend lucky enough to have been pulled and assumed he was as well.
Chris Fisher was my newcomer, and later my oldcomer.  She was a really good person.
It's weird to hear these names again, I know.
You must have got put in shortly before I left.  I wasn't really participating much in group directly before I left, I was mostly off in the corner or in the infirmary.

Wow, you remember more than me.  Most of those guys stayed at my house at one time or another.  Did you ever stay in jackson?  (the guys always wanted us to drive them by the prison, lol) Len Noe was at our place a lot.  I have to say, for my part, I really liked having phasers at our house on the weekends.  It was like having a bunch of brothers- we played Nintendo and spades all weekend.  I mean, there were good parts.  Remember Chris from Pittsburgh?  I went to college in Pittsburgh, and they helped me get setteled- made the move less scary.  (Rob Wolfe too)

I remember a short dude from jackson, always needed a shave I think.   If that was you, sorry I don't remember your name but I remember you being real chill.  Nintendo games are fun, I downloaded a bunch of old ones and still play em.  I played this one game, master blaster, at this kid in Dearborn's house.  He was a little slow but we got along alright.  I keep trying to remember his name, its driving me crazy.  Anyway ... back in a few more months
