My daughter just called.  The winds are still very strong and large trees have been uprooted in her apartment complex.  No power since early morning. She is in Palm Beach County.
Hope all in Florida are safe.

Anybody hearing anything? I'm getting that the Tampa Bay area is alright, the beach around Pompano is w/o power, but not too messed up, Sunrise area is really messed up. My li'll bro in law was walking down the middle of University Blvd cause there are so many trees down you can't navigate the sidewalks. He's fine, but his appartment lost it's roof. He and his roomie spent a couple of days in a shelter.

Anybody else?

One damn strange storm.

My sister took a direct hit on Marco Island...eyewall hit.  Marco was up and running the next day, electric and everything.  She lost her screen room but nothing more.

My other sister is north in Venice Florida. Nothing but high winds. I am way north of tampa and had 5 hours of 40 mph winds.

Ft Lauderdale is expected to be without power for another week and got hit harder, as did miami.  Apparently the trip across the everglades actually strengthened the storm a bit due to the high warm water conditions in the glades right now.  It just doesn't make much sense.

Charlotte county (South of Venice, but North of Ft. Myers) got very little damage - we didn't even lose power here - but it blew the blooms off a few plants.

Boca Raton is still without power - and the cell service is sketchy as well... I'm still waiting on an update from a friend down there.  Yet parts of Miami has power, as reported by someone else.

I don't think we'll see another storm this year though - judging by the temperature.  I hope I'm right?

A good friend in Ft. Lauderdale lost his mother Monday. She'd been quite ill for a long time, had a medical emergency but there just wasn't ambulance service available. I haven't exactly been glued to storm coverage. But does it seem that they're rather underplaying the effects in Dade and Broward?

I've been following it in the Miami Herald, and by phone with my mom, a friend's Dad, and an old friend of mine--all of whom are in Broward County. It's terrible. Nobody has any electricity, and the water from the tap is contaminated; they're not supposed to drink it. There are water distribution centers set up and some grocery stores like Publix are open but the lines are a block long and supplies are limited.

You can also read all about on MiamiHerald.com

Their coverage is pretty detailed. It's awful. Florida Power and Light is saying that power probably won't be restored to most of South Florida for about three or four weeks.

Miami International Airport has reopened though. The Hollywood-Ft. Laud Airport is closed indefinitely.

My daughter is ok.  No major damage to her unit.  Others lost part of the roof and some maintance guys had to come in and cut trees out of doorways to get people out.  She still can't get gas or any supplies.  She has enough for 4-5 more days.  UPS is delivering to some of the areas.  Just sent a bunch of packages down and they said they would be there by Friday afternoon. From what she has told me, it is worse that what I have seen on the news. She just moved from Palm Beach and is now close  to Pompano/Margate area.  She said the large oak trees are mostly gone, the large power lines are down everywhere as well as a lot of debris. What stores are open are only taking cash, she can't get gas.  FEMA is a joke. People waited hours at one spot only to be told they weren't coming. Amazing UPS can get to her.
She said a bunch of people were arrested last night for violating curfew and she has heard reports of looting.
Palm Beach Post, at least online, seems to be doing a good job of covering things.  They just need to get on base with were supplies can be found.

major structural damage is relatively minor in dade and broward, especially considering the strength of the storm that came thru. certain areas definetly have more damage, plantation, coconut creek, margate being areas hit rather hard, but even then there's little major damage. mainly roof damage and trees down, which in some cases of course hit roofs and cars. the biggest problem will power which most areas should have restored by nov 8th, and everyone within a month. since power is scarce the number of functioning gas stations is rather low. it seems that a great deal of people did not fill up prestorm. grocery stores are opening but open till 6 to close in time for curfew. generally speaking i would say we are quite well off especially when compared to Katrina on the gulf coast. i think within 3-4 days power will be restored to a large portion of the city which should bring more gas stations back online lessing that stress and atm's and credit card machines will probably be up and running with better regularity.

It was my experience that next time there is another Catastrophe the government should turn over relief coordination to Fedex, UPS & WALMART....

Good to hear there was no one hurt...

Yah know, seems to me that individual families and small organizations (churches, pta, lodges, etc.) used to take care of most of this stuff. I mean, if you live in Florida, you know the storms are coming. Maybe not every year like the snow up here. But you know it'll come. We always had stored food, gas candles, etc. And we'd fill up the bath tub (as instructed by the tv people) whenever a storm was headed right to us.

Were we the only ones?

Ginger,
I lived in South Florida for over 30 years.  Been through a number of hurricanes, we always had stored water, tubs filled, gas grills, batteries, flashlights and usually a weeks worth of food. I know my daughter had all of this but a gas grill and I think many people did the same thing as her. We used to have frequent power outages in the summer just with regualr thunderstorms. I think the big problem was that it was a Category 2 storm and usually those tend to not be too bad.  I never evacuated unless the winds were over 125 mph as did many I knew.  I think that after the storm when people were able to get outside they freaked.  I never saw that type of destruction with winds 100 mph or under.  I also never saw a hurricane strengthen after it hit land.  From what my daughter and her friends have told me that the damage was worse than all three storms last year combined(which she stayed up here in NC for all three of them).  To be honest I was ok with the fact that she stayed there with this one.  We never thought it would be much of a big deal since she had a weeks worth of supplies.  The freaking out started when FPL was saying 3-4 weeks without power and the reports of the violence happening in the gas line.  Mind you these report were NOT on the news, but through people she worked with or lived by that is actually happened to( guns and knives not just tempers flaring and screaming).
I realize that there will always be some that take no precautions, but I believe most do.  Her only fault was not filling up the gas in her car and taking out more money.  When I sent her supplies, the reports were no power for 3-4 weeks.  No ATM's for cash to buy from the few stores that would open and no electric to pump gas.  You would think gas stations would have their own generators and that stores could use the old fashion credit card machines (the ones you do by hand) especially in south Florida, IMHO.
On a good note, she picked up her packages AFTER hours from UPS , God bless those angels that helped her find the place (no street signs and a lot of debris to maneuver around)stayed late and FPL for her power restored late last night.  I personally think the 3-4 weeks might be good PR so when it comes on earlier they will have a much better opinion of FPL and won't complain so much when they get their bill....lol.  After she got home and unpacked the everything...boom...lights back on.....lol  Gotta wonder if she didn't get the packages if it would have come on.
All in all I think most people did take reasonable precautions.

Well I made it to a computer.  What a ride.

Antigen -Pompano Beach was pretty screwed up.  One of the 20+ towers got hit so bad you can't live there any longer.  My friends apt on the galt ocean mile has power & I'm here for a hot shower.  I waited in line for gas for four hours yesterday.  My friend's car at the Galt Condo was totaled as the wind threw it upside down onto the tennis court next door. They called me on the cell in the middle of the storm.  I, along with my brother and sister bought a boat a few weeks ago (timing is everything).  At the same time my friends were telling me about their car I was watching a boat traveling across the small lake my condo is on.  I was trying to sympathize with them about the car while trying to figure out if it was our boat sailing away.
It turned out not to be our boat. The boat does reguire a nose job(If anyone knows a good plastic surgeon)  Compared to New Orleans we have nothing to complain about.  The cool weather is much appreciated. I spk to jgar and JM and they are fine (and both have power unlike me (day six)
Later.

Unreal. I hope everyone in the path of the storm is safe.

Just imagine if Florida gets hit with a cat 5 the size of Wilma.

The destruction will be so huge and the loss of life so great that it is almost unimaginable.

Hurricaine Andrew was just a baby in size compared to Wilma.  IF Wilma or a storm like it is ever the strength of Andrew....LOOK OUT!

Glad ya'll are ok. Even you, Lauderdale (lol). Sounds like a funky kind of storm. I have one friend who's right on the beach just south of Atlantic. No big problems there, but still no power as far as I know. Then other spots around town are just devistated. I wonder if there were a lot of tornados in that storm?

Either way, I think my little bro in law has had about enough. We're expecting to see him up here by Thanksgiving. Hope he stays.
