Straight, Inc. and Derivatives / A Shout-out from Atlanta
« on: May 13, 2003, 10:07:00 AM »
Have lived in Atl. for years and still avoid Austell Rd. at all costs. I heard the building got turned into some kind of police-sponsored rec room for teenagers (am not sure about it). To think about sitting all day long with no windows. People in intensive care units develop psychosis in no time because of the (often) windowless environment--wonder what kind of impact it had on us.

Straight, Inc. and Derivatives / grief
« on: April 30, 2003, 11:21:00 AM »
Thought this might be helpful for Carmel. My dad died suddenly on Feb 2 of a ruptured aortic aneurysm. He had developed an abnormal heart rhythm back in Jan, and during the cardiac workup, this huge aneurysm was diagnosed. Being a physician, I knew it was like a time bomb, and I knew he didn't have much time. I told all my bros. and sisters to say their goodbyes. We spent some nice evenings together in the days before he died. Only, I never got around to saying goodbye. I heard his voice over the phone when he was being carried out by EMS, and when I got to the hospital, he was dead.
I've never lost anyone close to me before. I'm learning that grieving is a very individual process. Sometimes, I realize that I'm thinking about calling him to ask him a question, and then, I'm reminded that that is impossible. I am finding that saying goodbye isn't as important as I thought it was. I'm surrounded at home by his paintings and sculptures, and I feel that somehow he knows that I'm missing him and thinking of him. I'm trying to honor his spirit by continuing on with my life, by playing piano, by working on my Polish (he was from Poland), and by letting myself experience whatever feelings come up. It's been really tough, but my friends and family have been a great support. People really do want to help, whether it's by bringing food over, or calling every day, or attending the funeral services. I never understood how helpful and meaningful these simple acts could be. It really helped me get through those first few weeks.
Carmel, I hope you are finding your own way to grieve, and that you are surrounded by friends and loved ones. I'm thinking of you.

Straight, Inc. and Derivatives / Acting out
« on: April 18, 2003, 10:04:00 AM »
In Atlanta, a guy named Dennis (?) stabbed a kid named Chad in the chest with a steak knife. It was in the bathroom, right before dinnertime. I remember Chad being carried out to the hospital and Dennis being brought before the group. I think he actually did it on purpose so he could get out of Straight. Anyway, we were instructed not to speak about what happened with our parents or foster families--anyone who mentioned it would be started over or something like that. Really, what we all needed was a trauma counselor! The worst part is, Chad ended up coming back to group after he got out of the hospital.

Glad to hear you're enrolling in art classes. What do you like to draw? I'm a portrait painter/people drawing person. Have always been artistically inclined. Also, love to sculpt.

The Bible was also written by man, was it not? At least a couple of centuries after Jesus died. I think most of the stories were passed down in the oral tradition prior to that. The written word is man's interpretation of the word of God. Many wonderful books have been written by man! Ever read Stephen Hawking or Hermann Hesse?
In general, people who've been thru an experience like Straight (or, anyone who's ever studied the Crusades or the Spanish Inquisition) are going to be wary of organized religion. I think you can be religious, religious and spiritual, or just spiritual. Like Clay L, I think actions speak much louder than words. Whether you serve "God" by fishing, meditating on a mountaintop while elk hunting, creating works of art, caring for the sick, or attending church/synagogue/mosque services, you can't lose by being true to yourself. That's the beauty of free will.

This is an old post that I was looking at yesterday, and it made me think about the Garrett's house. I think it was originally posted back in Oct or so--my reply was the only new one since then.

Bob, are you talking about the movie, Das Boot, or about a boat house? At any rate, have seen and enjoyed the movie.
This thread was not intended to be a "love rap" or to haunt anyone with creepy vibes. For the love of cheez whiz! Is there anything wrong with actually attempting to get to know one another? Not everything in life has to somehow relate back to Straight, does it?

Did any of the Atlanta folks ever stay at Hannah Garrett's house? Her parents were from England, and cooked insane amounts of food, like roast beef and Yorkshire pudding. They had a big, spiral staircase, and the parents were pretty old. Mr. Garrett drove a Jag, I think (it was pretty old, too). Anyone?

Yes, I am Polish, and have quite a bit of family in southern Poland. My last visit there was in 2001 with my parents, my husband, and our kids. It was the last trip I took with my father, who was born and raised there. He died suddenly on Feb. 2 of this year, and I miss him terribly.
Alway like to hear from other fans of Hedwig. Really great music and graphics. "I feel so optimistic..."

Residency is like being a head of Belgian endive or white asparagus--we never get to see the sun. Hell, it's a lot like being in Straight! Have many good medical stories.

Hiding behind a brown paper bag--forthright, or passive aggressive? Hmmmmm. Lighten up a little.

Actually, there is nothing passive aggressive about that statement. It clearly and succinctly reflects an opinion. We are all entitled to our opinions here, are we not?
