Just a short note to anyone else in SW FL - hope you're all safe and/or in a safe place. I'm about 90 miles North of ground-zero, but I'm heading to Northern territory.
There are tornadoes to think about also - so if your house can stand up to the 70-100 MPH winds, I'd still get out of the way. JMHO.

We ended up in a place called Fanning Springs, in this little fleatrap of a motel we were happy to find at 12:30 AM.
On return, we found we didn't even lose power. There was some flooding along the Myakka river, but it didn't seem to affect the canals in my neighborhood.
I can see why people don't want to evacuate - this was my fourth one, only to come home and find barely a tree branch out of place. Better safe than sorry, though.

It sure is a toss up about whether to evacuate or not, but the mandatory evacuation in Tx resulted in 2/3 of the deaths being attributable to the evacuation, rather than the hurricane.

Mandatory evac are very stimulating to the economy- a forced vacation of sorts.

Right, but also remember roughly 1/5 of that 125 died in that bus fire. I also heard something about a woman who's vehicle was found, but she's still missing... never got the followup.

Oh yes, I helped the economy of the one-horse town I landed in, and several oil companies. :smile:
But on the flip side - I've lost 3.5 days of work, which amounts to over double the money I paid out for this little vacation - and came home to a breezy but sunny day. This was also my fourth evacuation for nothing, if you count last year.
Yes, I know I sound like I'm contradicting myself by bitching about it, but that's cash that can't be recovered. If we had stayed during the voluntary evactuation, and Wilma changed her mind, - it wouldn't have been as bad as Katrina due to the lay of the land - but it still would have been a bad scene, and we would be deemed "stupid" for not leaving.
Ah - anyway... it's good to be home - I just don't wanna do this anymore!!! :grin:

Fanning Springs is really nice if you get to visit not under duresss.
