Lord exhausted, I think folks who were beat as kids would disagree with you. Substituting one kind of abuse for another is not Progress..
Yes I can see why it came across that way, it's not exactly what I meant .. I was more thinking along the lines of disciplined children are generally more well behaved (not true in all cases, including mine!) I am more getting at the point that we have become so PC when it comes to kids and their chidren's rights charter crap that it's no wonder many are going off the rails, they just don't know where they stand, everything is abuse as far as kids are concerned nowadays, if you knew how many times mine said in one day "you can't do that! I'm going to get you done!" m...kay, wanna use the phone    My point is that chidren need, thrive and are generally happier when they have limits and boundaries, parents are too scared to look at them the wrong way nowadays because they live under constant threat of being fined or having them taken away etc

Honestly Exhausted, sometimes you scare me. The vast majority of parents who end up patronizing the "troubled teen industry" do not have a problem with be too lenient with their kids. Almost every single parent I've come across has precisely the opposite problem. We are talking about parents who pay huge amounts of money to have their children locked up, denied all basic rights, and physically, sexually and psychologically abused for offenses as minor as smoking pot a few times, having "pre-marital sex", being gay, practicing an alternate religion, or slacking off a bit in school.

These are the same parents who in many cases will defend the people who kill or terribly abuse their own flesh and blood. The problem with these people is not a lack of ability to further control and subject their children to misery. These people need to learn patience, compassion and empathy - not more effective ways to discipline their kids.
Well you obviously haven't read my postys very thoroughly nor do you know me as a person or a parent, if you did you would undersatnd that we are on the same side

Although kids do need discipline, the one's without it are usually extremely unhappy and crave for boundaries and rules

Yer I know what the teen industry is about, I've done a lot of research on it, but hey, if you'd read my posts you'd know that already - hence why my own child hasn't ended up in a program

This is exactly why i stopped posting at Fornits, there's always someone ready to twist words and manipulate others into being a dunce or a bad person, I wonder how many actually care about having a go at others rather than sorting out the problem of abusive programs, cos a hell of alot of energy goes into one and not the other

As for me scaring you, what a ridiculous thing to say! It scares you that i feel kids are becoming more and more anti social because no one has any rights apart from them in society (not true once in program I know)

Don't let a bit of common sense boundaries for kids scare you, channel that fear into the abuse that goes on in programs, that's what you're here for right?

Exhausted, just realised not logged in

Back to the real issues, if any of you are willing to talk civilly...

You all know my story, I can bring copy it here if you don't. I was not even close to an addict. I knew my rights and tried to leave. I could not. I was not allowed to ask for food when I was hungry (because that wasn't experiencing powerlessness). I was forced to shave my legs because not doing so was "part of my disease" and "keeping me sick". When I told them I was not a drug addict (and using drugs less than 20 times hardly qualifies anyone as being an addict) they told me "you don't have to use drugs to be a druggie". When I asked to see a lawyer or to be allowed any of the rest my rights under the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, or the UN Constitution of Human Rights, I was told "druggies don't have rights".

AARC kidnapped me for almost 6 months. If my parents had done the same, they would be in jail. It is no different if they pay someone else to do the job.

Any comments?

Is TheWho back only due to some bizarre glitch from the move(s), or was there a decision to let him come back?

Just curious.

Hey, a while back it was mentioned that the sheer number of notification emails being sent out was fairly over the top. I personally don't particularly care about them, but the box is checked by default and I usually forget to uncheck it.

Wouldn't it make more sense to have it set to default unchecked, and then if people are interested they can select it?

Blombro posted the above in the "another apology" thread. This was one of the most telling statements I've bothered to read. It details the exact links between ASTART, CAFETY, etc. and the troubled teen industry.

ASTART, CAFETY, the NYRA, etc. are financially linked with the industry and ideologically sympathetic to the basic "troubled teen" premise. That is to say, 1) They purport to believe that some teens have problems that justify their incarceration outside of the legal and/or medical systems and 2) That "the good can outweigh the bad" in treatment programs. These two beliefs are what all the programs we've lived through base their operations from. These beliefs are what our parents told themselves to justify what they did to us. This is the foundation of all the abuse that has occured. Any organization that is "against" the industry needs to vehemently oppose those viewpoints.

So, I'm not sure if you've banned theWho's IP or just that registered name... but this new character sounds disturbingly like theWho. If so, are you planning on doing anything about it?

The Troubled Teen Industry / Over the GW NYTimes review

Free Will, Held Hostage for Years in a Zealous War on Drugs

The war on drugs may have temporarily lost ground to the war on terror, but the rehab drama is here to stay. “Over the G W,” Nick Gaglia’s lean yet harrowing dramatization of his own experiences with drug rehabilitation in the late 1990s, follows a troubled brother and sister (George Gallagher and Kether Donohue) as they are removed from their Bronx home and committed to a New Jersey treatment center by their well-meaning parents.

As an expected 30-day stay stretches to two years, the siblings are systematically brainwashed into a state of abject fear by cultlike staff members and the center’s menacing director (Albert Insinnia). Imprisoned and physically abused, the inmates are encouraged to inform on their erstwhile “druggie friends” and persuaded of their inability to survive outside the clinic. These scenes, remarkable in their restraint, strikingly capture the gradual erosion of free will and the seductiveness of tipping from rebellion to compliance.

Interweaving gritty black-and-white with saturated color — a sickly yellow-green for inside the center and throbbing reds and blues outside — “Over the G W” is a disturbing look at reprogramming that masquerades as rehabilitation. Having been forced to drink the Kool-Aid, Mr. Gaglia has produced a work that’s as much an act of emesis as of filmmaking.

OVER THE G W

Opens today in Manhattan.

Written, produced, directed and edited by Nick Gaglia; director of photography, Mr. Gaglia; music by John Presnell and Will Di Martino; released by Seventh Art Releasing. At the Two Boots Pioneer Theater, 155 East Third Street, at Avenue A, East Village. Running time: 76 minutes. This film is not rated.

WITH: George Gallagher (Tony Serra), Kether Donohue (Sofia Serra), G. R. Johnson (Mr. Morris), Albert Insinnia (Dr. Hiller), Michael Mathis (Joe), Justin Swain (James) and Jessika Graff (Jeanie).

Here's the url for psy's new messageboard:
http://www.freepowerboards.com/strugglingppl/index.php

It's moderated and there are a couple of private forums as well. More suvivor friendly, but also allows for better discussion between suvivors and program parents if that's what you're looking for.

The Troubled Teen Industry / My Review of Over the GW
« on: June 07, 2007, 04:06:41 AM »
I have to say, the movie was actually quite watered down in my opinion, and the director mentioned that it was intentional as well. It seems he didn't think it was believable enough if he was too graphic in its depictions of what happened in KIDS. I have to say that I think I agree.

Anyway, even watered down, I found it very difficult to watch. I went through "Kids of the Canadian West" which is a bit different from how Kids of Bergen County was. But it still really, really affected me. When I was in the place I was in, I used to scratch at my arms and legs until they bled - I couldn't help it. I hadn't done that since I got out almost 5 years ago, but while watching the film I started doing it without even being aware of it. When I got out of the theatre my fingernails were all bloody.

Since then (actually a bit before then I guess), I've been a lot more fragile then I've been in a very long time. It blows me away how so much time can pass and yet when it comes back to me like this, it's like I'm right back there. It's like it's still all happening to me right now. Nevermind that I am a completely different person: stronger, happy with who I am and where I am, and in a safe place... In a second I'm right back there - helpless, scared shitless and completely bewildered.
