partying without guilt
In the beginning I stayed sober...then felt strange saying I was an alcoholic in meetings, and didn't feel right being there.
I left.
The thing I explained to Newton when he asked me about 8 months ago if I was doing what I had to to stay sober, was, I'm not sober in YOUR eyes...but alcohol and drugs doesn't rule my life. I wasn't going to give him the satisfaction of telling him I smoked pot once in a while, but drink? Oh, yeah. In fact, I'm going out tonight with a couple friends that I haven't seen in about 4 years! It's not a matter of "being a druggie" anymore. It's a matter of living my life and just having fun!

WOW! Thank you sooooo much for posting! I am completely and amazingly happy and thank ful that you took the guts to post. We all did things we are ashamed of, we all did them because we were made to, not always because we enjoyed it either! Granted some people had a lot of anger and did a lot of things spitefully, I'm sure i probably did also...but think of WHY we did these things! Everyone knows what happens if you don't do what you're told! Nobody can really blame each other for doing these sorts of things. Yet there are some that do, as you upsettingly found out. If I could apologize FOR theose guys i would.
Anyhow...I'm babbling...Welcome to the message board...can't wait to meet you at the conference.

HEY! I'm Kimberly in Florida actually....I'm getting a hotel room and have NO problem sharing with anyone! Male / Female, doesn't matter. I don't see us getting much sleep anyway, but if someone starts "nodding" I'm sure we can be adults about it! lmao!!!!!
Seriously...please feel free to Bunk with me,,,i think Ginger is staying with me too, and you guys would LOVE each other! I'll NEVER get any sleep if you two get together and compare notes about all the legalization and stuff!

HEY! Lord...I wrote a whole long post earlier, clicked add reply and it froze up, so forgive me if this is short and sweet...
I'm in Florida...where are you? I am on the east coast. I have a therapist over here that has dealt with people from Straight, that's why I go to him. He's OK....also, I can't stress this conference enough. I've met a lot of Doctors and Lawyers that dealt with Rebecca's lawsuit (sued Newton for over 4.5 mil like 2 years ago) They are wonderful people. Some of them might be at the conference or at least someone could point you in the right direction.
I know EXACTLY what you are talking about though! I have been out if KIDS for over 10 years and still have nightmares...they're not AS BAD since I have been online for 3 years talking about this shit and helping shut places down etc...It really does help to talk about it. If KIDS/Straight taught us NOTHING it did teach us that we need to talk about things. And that i really do agree with. I have so many friends from KIDS that have almost NEVER spoken about it and have actually made up new childhoods to tell people about! They have a really hard time when this subject DOES come up. I have been very open and talkative about it since i left, really and I have only had a couple "breakdowns". No hospitalizations....but I'm positive that if I WASN"T open about what happened to me and the things that went on in there, I'd be in a depression hospital.
As far as meetings, i haven't gone for 7 years and I personally feel better. My step-father is in AA and goes every night practically and he's over 20 years sober. I have nothing AGAINST AA...if it works for people, then more power to it...but me personally...I found I went from one environment of people controlling my life and my mind to another. I still have friends in AA and we talk, but it's not for me. But that's my step-dad's answer to everything too..."Maybe you need a meeting"
Pisses me off.
Anyhow, turns out this did end up long.
I am really glad you found our board, there are plenty of us here, and some that don't really post anymore but just kinda linger and read because it got too emotional...I'll say it again, the only way to get through that is to face it head on. I've dealt with it head on for over 10 years, and it HAS gotten better!

PS participating in things like the conference in July has helped me because I know I'mmaking a difference and making the effort to shut these placces down!
I feel like the cheerleader for this conference! I just can't stress it enough!

As for KIDS, (the place I was in). I had to realize for myself that I wanted to get out. There was no real way of contacting me...just make sure that if you get a strange phone call one day that you GO GET that person, or at least do your best to retrieve that phone call and where it came from.
My father wasn't involved with the program , and he told me after I got out, that he heard I was on third phase and went to my school to get me. (I was already set-back to 1st phase by the time he did this) That's an idea. As for the letter, it's an idea, but it could only get that person nin trouble. It MIGHT get to him, but then he also might not get the "secret message" and if he gets it, that would probably mean that staff that read the letter prior to him reading it would get the message also. They are trained to look for that sort of thing.
I hope anything you try works, but don't get your hopes up.
I also found out after KIDS that one night when I was a 1st phaser and going home with other people, that all my friends were standing outside the program one night protesting and looking for me to try and pull me from a car...I remember the night, because all the old comers told us newcomers to put our headds down so as not to see anything. So, I didn't even know it was them!
A lot of efforts are useless, but do what you can...always!

Oh, my goodness! I know what yoiu mean! I told work the other day I had to go to DC for this conference and they asked what for just curiosity. I said basically just business, because it would take me HOURS on end to explain it to them! I really hope this site and board help you. Like I said, it may get rough at times, but we have all gotten upset and not wanted to face it...just hang around! :-)

I am taken aback by your post, Kenneth. I am so glad that you found us even if it wasn't on your own accord. I have been interested in fighting against these "rehabs" for quite some time now, just didn't really know how to go about it. This conference I think is our beginning to all this. I was in KIDS of Bergen County from 88-90 and experienced the "Straight" you said people threw in your face. I experienced Miller Newton day in and day out.
I do want to warn you, this is going to be a lot to handle.It was and still is for me. I've had to deal with a lot since finding all these people online...but it has been great. I ran from KIDS in August of 90 and didn't look back for the first while, then a few months later, a freind (copped out) and stayed at my house. My house kinda became the place people ran to until they could get on their feet. From then on, I kinda made it my mission in life (besides my husband and kids) to help these kids that were still under the control of Newton and others like him.
Anyway, I'd like to personally welcome you to our board and personally invite you to the conference! I'm getting a motel, and anyone who needs a place to crash, including you, are welcome to stay...
