Feed Your Head / Did anyone read this week's
« on: May 07, 2007, 04:22:24 PM »
Newsweek? The article on AA? Here's a quote:

"They start isolating people, getting them away from any feedback other than their own."

Sound familiar?

It's not a blanket indictment. It's a look at the potential for Program Thinking.

CEDU / Brown Schools and derivatives / clones / Help At Any Cost
« on: March 03, 2006, 11:16:00 PM »
I haven't read the Help At Any Cost book yet, but I am planning to... Especially since it could be relevant to my profession. I just got word the author, Maia, is appearing at Borders Books in Columbus Circle in NYC on March 23rd to anyone interested. I might see if I can work it in myself.

The Seed Discussion Forum / Seed/CEDU
« on: December 29, 2004, 11:51:00 PM »
I've been reading stuff from Seed and Straight since I started over at the CEDU forum. There are many similarities in terms of raps, isolation from the outside world, control, insularity, and group think.

What I want to know is if you guys had anything like propheets.  Propheets are the ultimate in mind fucking experentials that last anywhere from 24 hours to a week. (I think there are 7 total.)You are isolated (and sleep deprived)with your peer group in a setting and subjected to extreme rap sessions that tear you to the core, intense exercises with heightened emotional subtext, and perform rituals that bond you to the group and in a way, makes every other relationship seem shallow. (It's all manipulative.)  Words, music, lighting, and setting are all used to manipulate the ambience. It is all very "top secret" and way to intense for developing minds. At the end of the propheet, you rejoin the rest of the "school" and give a testimonial (that doesn't divulge secrets) so that the entire room full of people who haven't been through it see it as finding their personal holy grail.

Any similarities?

I went to CEDU awhile ago and want to find out to what extent--if any--things have improved at CEDU.  Are the academics still a COMPLETE sham? We had two days a week, phony credits, and elementary vocab lists for high school aged kids.

Are the raps still totally arbitrarily abusive, ignoring issues for high emotional drama, badgering kids to admit to things they have not done, promoting bullying, over disclosure by staff violating therapeutic boundaries, lying to or manipulating parents, casting students as spies/bullies.

Are their still bans and agreements that are arbitrary at best but nonetheless create a highly insulated environment? Do students have any awareness of the so-called treatment offered to them or are they still ambushed by intense wacked out propheets and bludgeoned to death with a totalitarian CEDU value system?  ARe kids still totally cut off and are parents still told their kids are lying or manipulating when they air legit grievances?

Are medical issues neglected? When I was at CEDU, drugs for mood disorders and adhd etc. were really avoided. I hear it is not the opposite and kids are overmedicated.

As biased as this whole post is I really am interested in finding out how things have changed for better or for worse.

Thanks for your time and input.

Break the silence and tell us exactly what happened in the I and Me and Summit. They say they want to keep it a secret? Don't let them. People deserve to know what happens there.

Straight, Inc. and Derivatives / Confronting your favorite sadists
« on: September 11, 2004, 11:21:00 AM »
I went to CEDU, but the Straight and Seed sites have had some very insightful posts that have been helpful to me.

When I went to CEDU, we were tucked away on an isolated mountaintop so we never had contact with them after we left.  It seems Straight were effective at keeping you isolated even though you weren't physically isolated in Florida in terms of location. Thus, after the program, you could still see the actual site and run into your abusers if you still lived in the area...

What I want to know is if you ever had an opportunity to confront your abusers after you were an adult and they had no power over you? Have you ever had the cathartic release of saying "this is what you did, and even if you don't own up to it, you know and I know the truth." Did it help? Because I dream of telling the staff at my old boogeyman exactly that.  Letting them that I know they have no real power except the power of abusing others and raping their minds and their psyches to compensate for their own feeling of utter worthlessness.

CEDU / Brown Schools and derivatives / clones / For the Guys on Moose Talk
« on: September 02, 2004, 05:09:00 PM »
Hello Guys, As you are aware, we all share similar perspectives on CEDU. For awhile, I was  unbelievably pissed off about Ottawa's total lack of concern (not to mention condescending attitude)toward our first-hand experiences.

But I still don't understand this most rank vulgarity and abuse directed at them.  It still seems to me that if you decry the abuses of CEDU, then you shouldn't emulate it. Be angry and tackle it on rationale; please don't bring perverse sexual and violent acts into it.

Also O2 is just a kid and shouldn't be subjected to this. With all the presumptuous BS we put up with at CEDU where they rewrote our history and issues to their script, we shouldn't possibly make presumptions about the Ottawas except on the basis of their attitude directed toward us and their argument for CEDU.

All they know is that they had a messed up kid who made a "miraculous" recovery at CEDU.  To them, the proof is in the pudding.

That is why I asked if it matters HOW the end was procured, and what specific facts they can posit on behalf of CEDU's methodology, and as you can see, they came up with nada so far. (Which I figured.)

Also, for other parents, it may be helpful to understand the long term effects CEDU had on you. I know OD already wrote of it and directly credits CEDU for it. I know SOS and Bryan both said they have very successful lives after going through some tumultuous times.  (Which to me proves they didn't need the "school" to begin with.) But still, parents researching these schools should be aware of the long term effects.  (Or how someone can be seemingly successful when they graduate but still be traumatized.)

But if we talk about moose cocks and call people ugly losers, and make assinine assumptions, then we deflect from the purpose. Do we really want this site to turn into the Elan board which is all puerile invective that doesn't have anything to do with Elan?

I'm coming from a sincere place. Please don't treat me to an extra special double delight of a rap session.

OK. Moving on from Mooses....

Many of us on the board have outlined specific reasons why we have a problem (understatement of the century) with CEDU. But none of us have heard the specific aspects of CEDU that your family endorses. What specifically did you find helpful about the program.

I already know that you find the post CEDU son/brother more fulfilled and on the right track. I want to know the SPECIFIC ways the program contributed to this. Hopefully, we can get a more constructive dialogue going and people can disagree on merit over personal attacks.

Also, this is a sincere inquiry as it has just occurred to me that I never asked. I will endeavor to think openly before replying.

CEDU / Brown Schools and derivatives / clones / Helping Kids
« on: August 26, 2004, 08:44:00 PM »
OK. I've got a question, and I hope to get some good insight. When I went to CEDU RS, it seemed a lot of kids there were not violent or drug addicts, just spoiled brats or depressed or unique or a little defiant.  In fact, you had to go to detox first if you had a drug problem.  It was basically a place for rich parents to send the kids they ignored for years after the kids got out of hand, in their opinion.

However, I am reading some posts where some of you are saying you went to jail a bunch of times, or were very aggressive etc. and I'm wondering what you really needed? Were your parents afraid of you and didn't know what to do? (Believe me, I'm not justifying CEDU because I don't think it deals with root causes and I also think if you OVER control certain kids, it only makes them more aggressive.)

Last, if a kid needs help, how do you provide it? I mean, I needed help. I wasn't on drugs; I wasn't violent; I wasn't a shoplifter or anything but I experienced a lot of trauma, neglect, etc.  I was depressed, not functioning, and had low self esteem. Some people say therapy, but I was all talked out. I already had therapy w/different people and all you do is sit and say boo hoo. That doesn't do shit.

How do we help kids who really need help when their parents already either dropped the ball or tried everything? Do we just say TFB? Because that sucks.

One thing I always wanted to know was if teh staff had raps amongst themselves and if they were as crazy as the house raps. Were they the same? Different?
