Title: "My" whatever...
Post by: starry-eyed pirate on September 13, 2009, 12:58:23 PM
Why does everything have to be "mine" ??  What's up with the "my" dvr, "my" music, "my"(your state here). "My" this and "my" that.  I'm sick of it.  It just sounds bratty and exclusive and ego-centric.

I've been observing this for years and hardly ever mentioned it to anyone but it's kinda weird and I don't like it.  Psychologically and socially it is an isolating way of thought.  I know it came from the computer culture.  Computers are killing humanity.  I can hear the chains draggin softly.

You mean like MySpace and My Florida? I get what yer sayin. Timmy said something along those lines to me some years ago.

But I don't blame the machines or computing culture. I think it's an outgrowth of Yuppie culture. And that's just the very small fraction of content available on the net that has become the most popular and well known cause of advertising and word of mouth n such.

Computing culture has brought us shareware. You probably don't come across that term much lately. It was a way for independent software developers to get their work out there and for prospective buyers to give it a try before you buy. Some developers went on the honor system; i.e. send me $xx if you like and use it. Others had their software disable itself after so many days unless you bought the key to unlock it. Still others released newer versions for a price with bug fixes and added features based on feedback from the free users. I liked those guys the best because they would usually give you the improved versions as they came out if you provided them with useful, well thought out feedback--something I've always had more of than cash.

The geeks have also given us Open Source. This entire server is built on that. The operating system, web server, forum software.... hell, even the graphics and smilies are all free for the taking to whoever wants them and anyone with an interest is encouraged to make improvements and share those back to the original developers for the good of all.

Check out the Electronic Freedom Foundation (http://http://www.eff.org/). These are some of the old-head hippie geeks who have fought long and hard to protect our rights to privacy (encryption for everyone) free expression (they've even come to bat for fornits by way of back channel advice and other such amity) and even working with The Well (http://http://www.well.com/) (nother good net history story worth knowing about) to publishing some of the very first free primers on how any typical non-geek can use the net to do whatever they wish to do. Look up the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Internet. (http://http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hitchhiker%27s_Guide_to_the_Internet)  (which entry is published on an open source, free Wiki)

Hell, even the programing languages, C, Perl, Php and the database engine, Mysql, are all open source, free software.

Don't blame the geeks if the yuppies just don't get it.

You're funny...more feedback than money... :roflmao: ...

and yeah, that's what I'm sayin...

I wasn't really blamin anyone...just sayin...it's a dynamic shift in the way people think and it's comin from the computer culture.  For all the good things computers can do they also have a way of dehumanizing.  I'm wary. ;)

I respectfully disagree with you. It's not coming from the computing culture at all. It's coming at us like endless torrents of spam.

Speaking of torrents, not only have the geeks pretty nearly always lived up to the idea that information wants to be free, they/we have actually gone pro-active in monkey fucking the shit out of international copyright law (which most of us feel was a mistake from the git go.... even Franklin and Jefferson weren't perfect in their philosophy) Check out http://thepiratebay.org/ (http://thepiratebay.org/) whenever you want a movie, music or any other kind of intellectual "property" that you can't or don't wish to pay for. The way that works is that the geeks in Switzerland have established their law on intellectual property so that it is not a crime for TPB to tell you where to find bits and pieces of a file. It may still be a crime for you to download those bits and pieces, but try tracking THAT shit down, especially if you use a (open source) onion router to do it.

Please, don't fear the puters just cause some asshole spammers have managed to use them to geeze all over your screen. That would be like blaming urban sprawl on hammers or bad music on microphones.

I don't know what you're talkin about.  Free information and copyright laws, intellectual property.  I'm just sayin The "my" this and "my" that is lame and annoying and is a harbinger of where we're headin socially.  The first place I noticed it was on web-site addresses, since then it's spread around.

Just take  a look at the average 2 year old and the " it's mine!" phase of their young lives, when they are just learning to share.
Nothing new. Some people never get beyond the MY phase, and others do. It's what makes one person a selfish asshole and another a decent human.

I don't mean to bite either, bro. Just that it bugs me, ya know? When the real geeks were fighting against international arms trading charges on just a shoestring budget, all the media was willing to talk about was pedos luring children on the net. Ok, that did and does happen. But it's not anything like representative of net culture. It's like saying children should be kept indoors in front of a tv or video game cause pedos might get to them if they get out and play and socialize. It's not untrue, but what are the odds if communities are paying attention to their kids and what is the cost of keeping them in a vegitative state in front of the tube?

It ain't us doing the "my" thing, Pirate. We're doing the "us" thing. Only msn, aol and the other conglomerate assholes are selling the "my" thing. The geeks are fighting it and, collectively, much bemused and disheartened over how many folk are willing to blame us for doing the very things we most hate.

O.k. Ant.  I see your point, even though the 2 groups of people you indicated, the geeks and the yuppies are hardly distinguishable to me.  If that is the case then I'm glad somebody is resisting this trend.  Sorry if I offended you.
Title: I Me Mine
Post by: Froderik on September 14, 2009, 08:47:09 AM
Interesting, but George Harrison made this observation (with a little help from LSD) long ago:

Quote from: "George Harrison"
Having LSD was like someone catapulting me out into space. The LSD experience was the biggest experience that I'd had up until that time...

Suddenly I looked around and everything I could see was relative to my ego, like 'that's my piece of paper' and 'that's my flannel' or 'give it to me' or 'I am'. It drove me crackers, I hated everything about my ego, it was a flash of everything false and impermanent, which I disliked. But later, I learned from it, to realise that there is somebody else in here apart from old blabbermouth. Who am 'I' became the order of the day. Anyway, that's what came out of it, I Me Mine. The truth within us has to be realised. When you realise that, everything else that you see and do and touch and smell isn't real, then you may know what reality is, and can answer the question 'Who am I?'

http://www.beatlesbible.com/songs/i-me-mine/ (http://www.beatlesbible.com/songs/i-me-mine/)

All through the day I me mine, I me mine, I me mine.
All through the night I me mine, I me mine, I me mine.
Now they're frightened of leaving it
Ev'ryone's weaving it,
Coming on strong all the time,
All through the day I me mine.

I-I-me-me mine,
I-I-me-me mine,
I-I-me-me mine,
I-I-me-me mine.

All I can hear I me mine, I me mine, I me mine.
Even those tears I me mine, I me mine, I me mine.
No-one's frightened of playing it
Ev'ryone's saying it,
Flowing more freely than wine,
All through Your life, I me mine.

I-I-me-me mine,
I-I-me-me mine,
I-I-me-me mine,
I-I-me-me mine.

All I can hear I me mine, I me mine, I me mine.
Even those tears I me mine, I me mine, I me mine.
No-one's frightened of playing it
Ev'ryone's saying it,
Flowing more freely than wine,
All through your life I me mine.

No, Pirate, you didn't offend me. I get what you're about. Just wanted to clarify `sall.
