Patricia, I think people are a little bit sensitive about kids on this site, especially if the kids could be potentially exploited or abused (its not a bad thing, its caring). We dont have any inside information about the show or how the kids are treated. Maybe you could help?
My question when I watched part of the show, was whether the children were in anyway distressed. The reason I ask is because I saw a young boy (maybe 8 years old) who was concerned because he said something like:
“I’m not going to be with my parents. There’s no adults, and I think I’m going to die out here because there’s nothing.â€

Patricia, you have a very good opportunity to educate us on how these shows work. There are many parents who view this site and are interested in someone who had a child on television. Your input could ease their fears that the parents and children are not being used.
This site has very opinionated people on it, but they are also interested in the safety of children. If you care about that you could stick around and answer some questions for the parents/viewers.

I do read the paper, quite regularly. I don't know what your trying to insinuate by asking me if I read a newspaper. There are more appropriate ways to give your child "freedom" as you have stated. Try allowing your child to attend a supervised summer camp. Encourage your child to join a youth group and go on a mission trip to a foreign country. Inspire your child to start a Habitat for Humanities project. All of these things can be done safely without placing your child in a dangerous situation. I appreciate the invitation for tea, however I cannot accept the invite. I did not know you prior to starting the thread. You were not a presence on these forums prior to said thread. I do not have anything to hide, however I seem to have more common sense than you. They used to sell commonsense by the barrel, but now the price of commonsense has gone up due to the lack of commonsense people seem to have.

Lady I'm from the south, the deep deep south so don't come here acting like you know how we live. First this is website of survivors of institutionalized abuse. Folks here have been through hells you couldn't even imagine. Second we are far from jealous of you and your poor decision making, no one here wanted or wants to be on a show that exploits children for ratings. For your information the outrage expressed by people like us has lead to shows such as this one to be shut down in this country, like brat camp. Folks with a half a brain understand that these shows that sell tears and humiliation are not safe for children. We speakout and do put the blame, and rightfully so, on parents like you. You don't like? Too bad you made the choice, I do hope cps investigates all the participants of these kinds of shows and puts the hurt of broadcasting companies and parents who subject there children to this kind of exploitation. To think that fox would be fined millions for airing Janet's sexy bits while shows like this are given free reign is absurd.

Patricia, I think people are a little bit sensitive about kids on this site, especially if the kids could be potentially exploited or abused (its not a bad thing, its caring). We dont have any inside information about the show or how the kids are treated. Maybe you could help?
My question when I watched part of the show, was whether the children were in anyway distressed. The reason I ask is because I saw a young boy (maybe 8 years old) who was concerned because he said something like:
“I’m not going to be with my parents. There’s no adults, and I think I’m going to die out here because there’s nothing.â€

They were not just completely left alone and I think some of the posts are a bit radical. I think there is controversy surrounding this show, but
if a parent wishes to allow their child to participate in something like this, then that is their business. IF it is abusive, neglectful, or child exploitation, then it will be reported to the authorities.

It would be nice to have an independent person there but I dont think it is as crtical because the producers and cameramen are trained in and are being paid to make a movie where as in a TBS or wilderness the staff are trained and being paid to look after the kids, so there are many people looking after their welfare and needs.

Thanks for bring this up………I hear you and that applies in any position…if you are a doctor or nurse, lawyer or whatever it is that you do for a living and you are hooked on meth you are not going to be very effective and your job and people around you will suffer.
If on the other hand you hire kids out of college who are pursuing (and excited about) a career in the mental health field ( specifically children), pay them a decent starting salary, let them gain some experience while being overseen by a licensed therapist then it is a win-win situation and I’ll tell you, the kids just love it. The staff is close in age to these kids and can relate more. More schools are taking a look at this.

You don't have to be around these places very long at all to figure out that they are primarily after making money. The kids are merely a crop and the parents are the cows. These programs milk the parents for all they are worth.
I don't think these programs have a goal of being abusive. The abuse happens because they are focused on making money. The poor nutrition, the poor health care, and the poorly qualified staffing are all a function of the owners trying to make a lot of money. You aren't going to find a facility that pays the people who have 90% of the contact with the kids much more than minimum wage.
The brainwashing that goes on in these programs appears to be for the same reason that the Korean POW camps did it. It lets them control the prisoners with far fewer guards. The kids are brainwashed to be docile and easy to warehouse. If it just happens to cause then life-long trauma as a result, so what? The facility just added a bunch of money to their bottom line.
The people who run these facilities know there is no scientific evidence that residential treatment facilities have any long-term effectiveness. They do not care. They know that scientific evidence indicates that 75% or more of the kids incarcerated in therapeutic boarding schools suffer long term physical or emotional injury from it. They do not care. They make $1 billion dollars per year from maybe 14,000 kids. That is what they care about.
