The Troubled Teen Industry / Industry TV show
« on: January 19, 2007, 04:47:29 AM »
So last night it was too hot to sleep in my crappy flat so I buggered off to my sisters cool climate controlled home. i still could not sleep so I turned on the telly and basked in channel surfing the million channels she has with her foxtel subscription. Seriously people it is a whole delightful world of shit.

But I digress. As i was Flipping through i came across some TV "drama" about one of these schools. It had a very young Haden Christensen in it. it all looked quite warm and fuzzy. I think it was called High ground or High mountain or some such. Did anyone watch this when it was on in the US? has anyone heard of it?

You will note that the dept for sport and recreation in Tasmania have listed CF amongst the other wilderness therapy programmes which are  voluntary and/or specifically based on the principal of first do no harm. I somehow get the feeling that the taz govt is blissfully ignorant of the  3 recorded deaths at CF. it would prolly help if many people flipped them an email telling them just how therapeudic and fun CF is for teenagers in the US. The good people of Tasmania are paying to advertise a death camp!

The Troubled Teen Industry / campbell park

http://www.campbellpark.org/index.htm

This school is located in New Zealand. It looks pretty good in a very blokey way, kind of like a normal boarding school with a strong outdoor ed component and a lot of options for boys who are not academic. There is no mention of it being therapeudic in any way. It also does not appear to force boys to go

But it is advertised on Struggling teens. Does anyone know anything about it? Not much has been found with a google search excpet for woodburys own review and this was from before the school opened.. Why would a normal school from New Zealand which is not run by US expats advertise on Struggling teens?

I was wondering if anyone can answer a question on the whole arms and motivating thing. In the trailer for the film, There is only a few kids  in the room. This was also the case in some documentary footage for lighthouse of florida.
I had been under the impression that they made the kids move their arms like that in order to be picked out of a crowd of about 50. But there were only a few kids. Has this changed over time?

The Troubled Teen Industry / ST Grandma gets it right!

Thank you to all who replied to my somewhat recent post (Frustrated beyond belief...)regarding my daughter who expected us to finance her trip home so that she could reconnect with unsavory friends and sleep elsewhere while she partied at night. My husband and I agreed that if that was her choice, she was welcome to visit, but would need to purchase her own ticket and stay with these friends.

Of course, she flew into a rage and was completely disrespectful to my husband and myself, hanging up on us twice. We also agreed that if she did show up in town, we would keep our visit short and low-keyed. Apparently, she discovered that her friends were not going to put her up during her visit, so she called the grandparents (my in-laws). Even though they had assured us that they would not do so, they took her in, provided her with a car, and let her come and go without reservation--all without telling us they had done so. They also went ahead and orchestrated an extended family dinner without consulting us as to our availability and had our daughter call to invite us at the last minute. I was ill, my husband was out of town, and my son was working that day. They went ahead and had the dinner without us in our local restaurant that we own.

My husband and I are deeply hurt and very angry with his parents. They have undermined our efforts with no regard to our feelings. Obviously, there were many valuable life lessons lost, along with our trust in them. By the way, this has happened before on a slightly different level since she ran away. We have decided it is necessary to speak with them about our concerns and ask that they please not interfere and make these kinds of decisions without at least running it by us. We don't begrudge their relationship with her, but these specific types of events are truly driving a wedge between us and them, and enabling our daughter's behaviors.

I just saw this Documentary film tonight. It was both intensely moving and frustrating. Andrew Denton, an Australian comedian and television interviewer goes to a "christian media convention" in Texas to find out why fundamentalist Christians believe what they do and where faith takes people and to examine the effect of these beliefs on American Political Policy.

As well as walking the floor and interviewing some of the kookier characters, Denton also conducts lenghty interviews with a trio of elderly southern Gentlemen, a hollywood actress, a guy who got religion after becoming so strung out on drugs that he lived in a cave till his wealthy family bailed him out and a cerebal young christian media producer with a PHD in theology.

One thing that stood out to me was that with the exception of the producer all of these people had encountered intense emotional pain in their lives. One of the elderly men for instance was forced to spend 3 days as a young man identifying dead bodies because of an oil refinery accident. When he said that the bodies began to talk to him it was evident that he had probably been suffering from some kind of nervous shock when this happened. The man took it as a spiritual sign and devoted his life to evangelism from that point on. These people were all articulate, sincere and likeable. This is why their completely blind faith and at times whopping bigotry was so immensely maddening. This film is a must see if it ever gets distributed in the US

Open Free for All / Indoctrination
« on: November 21, 2006, 05:41:20 AM »
On the Jesus Camp thread there was a debate raging between the fine line between indoctrination and brainwashing. Ant Questioned whether anyone had the right to indoctrinate their child into a religious faith.

This got me thinking. Isnt all parenting a form of indoctrination. Doesn't everyone do this to their children on some level if not spiritually then socially?
Think about statements like:
Well i am not everybody elses mother
They may do that We do not
In this house we......
Dont play with/eat that darling its yucky
Must you leave the house dressed like that?
There are children starving in (insert 3rd world nation of choice) so i think you can eat your broccoli young lady!

I am interested in peoples thoughts. particularly those who have children
