Elan School / [PLEASE READ] Elan Forum Rules

Rules and Policies of the Elan Forum and Subforums

Rules

1. Stay on topic - When posting in this forum, please pay attention to the topic heading.  Discussions that stray off-topic, yet are still Elan related, may be split off into several separate topics.  Discussions that have nothing to do with Elan at all may be either deleted or moved to a more appropriate section of Fornits.

2. Personal Attacks - Personal attacks against other forum posters are not allowed.  This is not retroactive.  Should you verbally "wish ill" on a person outside this forum, for example, and that person then becomes a poster on this forum, your old posts do not suddenly constitute a rule violation.  You will, however, from that point on, be expected to at least be civil towards that poster for the purposes of furthered discussion with all involved parties.  There is a time and a place for online "flame wars" (such as "Open Free for All"), but it is not here.  If you can't hold it in, take it elsewhere.

3. Contact Information - While you are certainly free to post your own email address, phone number, or contact information, it is not permitted to post the contact information of other people...  even staff.  The exception to this is the case of a person or entity that is a public figure (having put his/her self into the public domain) and for whom contact information is already widely available.

Policies

1. Responsibility. You are responsible for your own words.  This forum does not attempt to arbitrate claims or determine what is true and what is false.  Please do not write to us privately asking us to do so; the answer will be no.  The veracity of any given matter is left up to individual readers to decide.

2. Alternatives and Penalties. If you do not wish to abide by the above set of rules, you are free to discuss whatever you wish in the unmoderated sections of Fornits.  Posts that violate the rules may be deleted or moved to other sections of Fornits.  Repeated flagrant violation of these rules may be grounds for being banned from from this particular section of Fornits.

3. Amendments. Other rules may be added in time as needed.  Such amendments will not be applied retroactively (to older posts).  Any changes to these rules and policies will be announced in a new thread.

By posting in this forum you agree to all the above rules and policies.

Something's flaky with the search feature. Mind if I merge this topic with the one started on the 10th?

I just found a most delicious blues hole. Check out the Eagle's if you're ever bummin' around in Irwin on a Thursday night. Gil Snyder and the Mystic Knights host an open mic night w/ fucking phenomenal special guests. It's only a $3 cover and $2 drafts and really good BBQ. Last week it was Guitar Zack and this week Kenny Blake and this kid Guitar Shorty out of Boston. Check em out at http://www.myspace.com/Gypsycabrock

Holy crap. I guess they weren't speaking figuratively. Malaphus actually died. Damn!

God DAMN! That's sad as hell.

On another note, who knows if we'll ever recover the lost data. He was pretty hard line on free speech and on privacy so I don't know if anyone near and dear to him would give us access.

I was first introduced to the concept of cognitive dissonance in Straight, Inc. in around `80 or `81 when they incorporated a warped version of Rational Self Analysis and Rational Self Therapy. I'm trying to remember the name of the pshrink who came up with it cause he was scheduled as a keynote speaker at the Bathesda conference in 2000 but begged off at the last minute due to illness. Maltsby or something?

Anyway, the way they explained it to us then was that cognitive dissonance was the uncomfortable feeling that comes with change; with adopting some new belief or behavior. The word change itself was highly vaunted in Seed/Straight lingo. If somebody stood you up in group and said "I see you changing a lot..." that was a load off cause it meant you were getting 'positive feedback' (not sure feedback was the word... help anybody?) and not confronted.

Ayeah, I'd say some of the spooky people pulling the strings behind the scenes were very well aware of the concept and took pains to ensure that it's use in the RSA/RST lit didn't interfere with our programming.

Shit, that was me, Ginger, Antigen, not an admin post, obviously.

Ok, well, what's worth doing is worth doing well. I haven't got time to figure out the back end of this new set up right now and reassign the post so I'll just continue.

We also had a stated rule, repeated at least twice daily in rules rap, "No getting into your head" which basically meant no daydreaming or thinking.

I agree that the level of activity on fornits has gone way down.  I think part of it has to do with the move to SMF.  I'm not sure it was a really good idea.

I think we can regain the traffic. A site map would be ever so cool. Anybody? That and just keeping our shit together, ya know not leaving db pwds laying around all willy nilly (Untold thanks to WaWa for the free security check, btw. I don't care what they say about ya, style by the mile... oh... now where's my little "we are not worthy" smiley guy? Shit! Even the smiley guys are trailing off! Better do something quick!)

Quote
Another part of it has to do with TheWho.
The Who has lost the right to communicate.... here. There's still the rest of Cyberia, so it's really not half as harsh as it sounds.

Quote
Another part of it is that I think a lot of people are depressed and have lost hope, to a certain extent (GAO flopped, HLA survived, Deborah got frustrated and left...).  I must admit, it has affected me as well.

Try to take the long view. I think I'll go and bump some old Nazi threads or something.

For those who complain about the way I ran things... well.. I resigned as forum admin (still tech admin because I want the site running) for reasons I stated publicly on the forum a while back.  As to where ginger is?  beats me.  It would help if she would post once in a while but she's busy.

I do what I can.

This all being said, I have a few ideas up my sleeve i'll be posting later on.  I've been paying a lot of attention to the way Anonymous is handling the Cult of Scientology recently, and that does give me hope.  They're killing Scientology currently.  I'm hoping the situation can be repeated on the Troubled Teen Industry.  To that end, In the movie i'm making, i'll be making a lot of comparisons between Scientology and Benchmark.  It sounds silly, but trust me on this.  I think we need a new approach to fighting the industry.  To that end, I have something in mind.

As for the front page... We need writers.  If you'd like to volunteer, let me know and i'll pass it past Ginger and grant you access.

I volunteer!

K, thanks! Hit me up via PM and we'll talk some.

Spammer Sentenced to 9 Years In First Felony Conviction

By Gregg Keizer , TechWeb Technology News

A North Carolina man was sentenced Wednesday to a nine-year jail term for spamming millions of America Online users, the country's first felony conviction for spewing junk mail.

Jeremy D. Jaynes, 30, of Raleigh, N.C., and his sister, Jessica DeGroot, 28, were convicted under a Virginia state law that limits the number of e-mails mass marketers can send, and like the federal CAN-SPAM Act, forbids them from using fake e-mail addresses. Each was found guilty on three felony charges.

"This is a major victory for Virginians and all Americans," said Virginia Attorney General Jerry Kilgore in a statement Wednesday. "Spam is a nuisance to millions of Americans, but it is also a major problem for businesses large and small because the thousands of unwanted e-mails create havoc as they attempt to conduct commerce."

Jaynes, who went by several aliases, including Jeremy James and Gaven Stubberfield, was found guilty by a jury, which then recommended the nine-year prison sentence. His sister was found guilty of buying domain names to use for spamming, but only fined $7,500. An associate, Richard Rutkowski, 30, was found not guilty.

Although the three all hail from North Carolina, they were tried in Loudoun County, Virginia because they sent messages to America Online users. AOL has its servers at its Dulles headquarters.

When he was arrested last December, Jaynes was listed as the eighth most prolific spammer by Spamhaus, an anti-spam organization and clearing house.

According to Kilgore, Jaynes and DeGroot used spam to advertise a variety of products and services, including penny stocks, low mortgage rates, and work-at-home schemes. Prosecutors in the case alleged that Jaynes sent or tried to send 7.7 million messages to AOL subscribers in just one day, and reportedly raked in as much as $400,000 a month in orders for just one of their products.

During the trial, Jaynes was said to have accumulated a fortune of some $24 million by selling via spam.

"We've had the legislation in place and the technology to hunt down spammers, but we've rarely enforced the law," said Phyllis Schneck, the vice president of strategic development for CipherTrust, a message security firm based in Alpharetta, Ga. "Spammers are simply not afraid. As long as their profit model stays the same, they'll keep spamming. But when there's a huge risk and possible jail time, that profit model changes."

The three defendants originally faced prison terms of up to 15 years.

Jayne's attorney, David Oblon, was unavailable for comment, but the Associated Press quoted him Wednesday as saying the sentence was out of sync with the crime. "Nine years is absolutely outrageous when you look at what we do to people convicted of crimes like robbery and rape," he was quoted by the AP.

CipherTrust's Schneck disagreed. "These people have caused hundreds of thousands, and maybe millions, of dollars in damages, inconvenienced millions of people, caused untold lost hours of productivity," she said. "They deserved to be punished."

The landmark conviction, Schneck and others in the security business said, should put a damper on spam.

"The key to eradicating spam is education, legislation and enforcement, and using the best technology," said Schneck. "This case is a quintessential example of those three things. Education helped consumers report him, technology helped catch him, and the law prosecuted him. This shows that spam will not be tolerated in our society.

"It's true we've never seen more spam than we see now, but if convictions continue, we should see it reduced," she added. Schenk believes that spam can be wrestled into a manageable problem within the next two years.

Formal sentencing of Jaynes and DeGroot will take place in February 2005, and a judge will have the option then of changing the sentence, state officials said.

God but do I hate spammers!

When will the six years of posting history on the old forum be 'fixed'?
There are dead links all over the internet to useful information that are
archived there.
How does this rate on your list of priorities?
Just curious.

I think I'll answer this. Should clarify my thinking and 'institutional history' on these questions. Feel free to chime in but let's not get too hung up on this.

Most importantly, it’s a revelation to me that moderating powers are so circumscribed. Knowing they are is comforting.
There should be a sticky explaining what moderators and administrators have the power to do, and not do.

No, I think I'll leave it to the reader to decide how much they want to know about the forum software and how much of their time and energy they want to spend learning it. SMF has very good documentation and support. If you have concerns about the back-end workings of the fora, take advantage of that. these forums are mostly about the troubled parent industry, thought reform and such like topics.

Quote
This has always been a big point with me.  There should be some expectations as users (customers) on how our posts will be handled and/or what the rules are.

Again, let the buyer be as wary as they feel the need to be. I'm not yo mama.

Quote
1.   Private Messages carry an implied security that the posts will not end up on the open forum.  This has been proven not to be true over and over again and was violated again today when a survivors personal information was reposted on the open forum by a fornits moderator because she didn’t agree with him.

See above, the privacy of your pms is only as good as the integrity of the person to whom you send them.

Quote
2.   If you have a user name and cannot log in is it okay to post as a guest?  Apparently not.  I have been harassed all day because of this.  I indicated that the moderator (psy) could tag my posts if he liked, but I was asked to leave the forum if I wasn’t logged in.

It's ok with me. It may annoy others. They're as free to be annoyed and to express it as you are to do it. Have lots of good fun!

Quote
I think there should be a set of rules for admins to follow and what we can expect as users of the fornits forum.  There are many that do not want to post because they are not sure if they can speak openly and/or afraid to rock the boat with their opinions with fear their personal information will be exposed here.

Vote with your feet. I miss that li'll 'Boycott Fornits" smily guy. And please, people, don't give sensitive private information to strangers. What do I look like, yo mama?

Quote
Maybe a list of rules or assurances as we enter the individual forums would help, i.e. what are the admins and mods allowed or not allowed to do.... what personal information to they have access to.... can all admins and mods read the personal messages?......  Can they review these messages and make this information public if they like.

Again, do your own homework, make your own assessments, watch your own back yard and I mine. If you feel strongly that things should be done in the way you describe, well then by all means take some of the ample time you'll have on your hands now that you're not posting to Fornits to run your own damned forum.

Rampant talkin' out in Group. And it seems to be having an effect.

13
Ok, let me clear a few things up here. First, don't believe everything you read. Just because a couple of fellow vets are losing their tempers and good graces and accusing one another of shit doesn't mean it's actually happening.

Second, I really should update the terms of use. God! I could probably spend days on end doing things that need doing around here. Instead I'll chip away at it, delegating as much as possible to others and learning on the fly how to do that right. Wish me luck, please.

Third, moderators run their own fora their own way. I strongly recommend to them that they go as easy as possible on editing or banning or rule making and what have you because I know from experience and observation how that damages the conversation. Know how Frod got the Let It Bleed forum? He bitched about the way I was running things. I said ok, show me how it's done. He has. It's not just exactly like the rest of the fora in purpose or personality. It's something different that I could never have done quite like that. But I've been wrong about a great many things in this life and so I don't make any hard rule about it. If you don't trust the moderator w/ whatever back end info they may get then don't post to that forum. Simple.

Fourth, same goes for private messages. Just as with snail mail, the privacy of your pms is only as good as the integrity of the recipient.

Fifth, and this is most important, I think. Please try to respect one another. Don't waste a lot of time and energy worry about how some joker is going to fool other, less perceptive people. That's just so damned conceited!

Sixth, Fornits will never be the same, that's very, very true. But then it hasn't been the same since it started. Started out just a couple of us bitching and farting and trying to get some attention like Horton's li'll ol'e Who down in Whoville. We all knew each other in real life and pretty much agreed with one another about the program. For the most part, that is. Very soon the Mysterious D came along defending Straight. Quick as anything, he set up his alumni group on yahoo to gather together all the thousands of proud Straightlings and revive the 7th Step Society. I joined it and promoted it, which I think confused the hell out of him for awhile, but I'm pretty sure we're friends now. At least we're not on bad terms that I know of. I should drop him a line....

Anyway, Don did things his way and things went differently over there than they have here. Lot of good mojo has come out of the alumni group (which pretty quickly became devoid of anybody who would self identify as program Alum once old friends started talking and comparing notes) Same with ISAC. Kathy Moya is one of the people I respect most, would never do things the way I do. She's far too polite and concerned with people's feelings to let this sort of shit go. I'm glad she's doing what she's doing. It needs to be done and I'm not capable of it.

Things will never be quite the same as when this was just my hobby that I liked to share with my friends. But it'll still be damned good in some old ways and a whole lot better in some others.

Yes, the forums need to be rearranged. In fact, since we can do sub forums, I may categorize them that way. Or if I find there's very little traffic on some which are related to others, maybe I should combine them.

We'll see. I have to look around a whole lot more before I can even make an assessment. One thing that hasn't changed, I will listen with interest to just about any suggestion then take my own council and do what I think best.

Wow, this shit does attachments? Leme see how that works

Sorry, just got in. I had to change the description. I can't promise anybody safety. This is going to get some clams' attention. They're fucking brutal to critics, especially escapees. My jaw hurts. LOL

Seriously, let's just trade useful info such like what you've already provided, Mike, and not encourage a lot of private disclosure.
