The Troubled Teen Industry / Survey of Survivor Testimony
« on: July 27, 2010, 07:17:48 AM »
The Community Alliance for the Ethical Treatment of Youth's (CAFETY) survey of the residential program experience is now posted online! The responses of survivors and alumni of these programs is extremely helpful as we continue to identify the issues on the ground and to determine how to best allocate CAFETY's resources. Please consider taking the time to fill out this survey.

Your input is invaluable in assisting us in achieving our mission of promoting and securing the human rights of youth.

Please distribute widely!

THANK YOU

I have read many posts about a time lag between leaving a CEDU school and realizing that the program had had an abusive effect. If this was your experience, I am curious about what happened in your life that made you "wake up" to the abuse?

Related: Is there anything someone might have said or done to help you when you got out of your program? Anything that might have put the experience in perspective sooner?

I am a once ignorant mother who put my daughter in one of these "programs". I am ashamed to say I was fooled by wonderful masters of marketing.
Back to topic, what I have seen to be most healing to my daughter is when people validate how wrong and awful her experience once. How none if it was her fault and that she is truly a survivor to have been through all that and come out in one piece. I believe this is true of anyone who has spent time in one of these places.

HR 911 "Stop Child Abuse in Residential Programs for Teens Act of 2009" passed the House of Representatives over one year ago.  Today, it continues to sit in The Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pension Committee, waiting to be taken up.
This bill, if passed would protect scores of our nation's kids from abusive and unregulated private or public residential "boot camps, boarding schools, behavioral modification programs, etc." (Sect. 2 (4)(i) HR911)

There are scores of adults that bear the scars of abuse at the hands of unregulated institutions that would today be regulated by this bill. Many have contacted me and are losing hope of ever seeing justice through legislative change to protect kids today. We failed these men and women once.  Let's not fail our kids today.
I urge you to sign this petition.  Force a hearing in the Senate HELP committee on HR 911.  Child abuse prevention is important to us, it should be of the utmost importance to those on our payroll in the US Congress.
