Author Maura Curley updates her 1991 book with new information and a dramatic epilogue, presenting a provocative portrait of Ricci as a drug addicted psychopath who terrorized adolescents at Elan and his employees at his racetrack.
This is the story of Joe Ricci, racetrack owner, and founder of Elan, a for profit treatment center for troubled adolescents attended by children from around the world, including Kennedy cousin, convicted killer Michael Skakel.
Elan operated for nearly forty years in rural Maine until it closed in 2011 because former residents - now adults - waged a campaign to tell their experiences of abuse via social media and anti-Elan websites. They are still seeking justice and considering class action.
Yet Ricci ran for governor of Maine posing as David facing Goliath, duped the the iconic news show 60 Minutes into broadcasting a favorable portrait of him, and convinced a jury to award him $15 million in a lawsuit he filed for violation of his civil rights.
Curley, a journalist and insider who once worked for Ricci, meticulously chronicles abuses at Elan, which she didn’t discover until after she stopped working him. She also relays her first person account as a marketing consultant for Ricci’s companies and his campaign for governor.
Duck in a Raincoat contains stunning revelations of psychological manipulation, drug use, child abuse, professional malfeasance and appropriated virtue. But perhaps most shocking are Curley’s conversations with Ricci’s partner, Dr.?Gerald Davidson, a psychiatrist, and former Harvard University professor who lends Curley his medical textbooks to illustrate Ricci's psychopathic personality.
Elan made both Ricci and Davidson millionaires many times over. It wasn’t until Davidson was dying of cancer that he finally revealed the truth about his partner.

One last note of observation, has anyone ever noticed what the Elan School, Bill Diamond, Ed McColl, Danny Bennison, Art Warshawsky, and Sharon Terry all have in common? They all seem to be very skilled in blaming the victim. It is the victims fault for their own suffering; it is the victims fault because they could not deal with the abuse that was the Elan School. It is their fault that rather than come back to the Elan School for more criminal abuse, the victims of this abuse would rather commit suicide. God Dam that is some sick kind of legacy don’t you all think.
When Phil Williams got beaten to death in the ring at the Elan School, it was not the Elan School’s fault, oh no, it was his fault because he had a medical condition. Phil Williams a ward of the state of Maine was beaten to death in the ring at the Elan School. Bill Diamond had to have known about this lovely little fact. We wonder did Bill Diamond help the Elan school cover up this glaring death of brutal violence.
And to the person that threw the fatal punch, honestly, and this is true it was not your fault. No sir it is the Elan School’s guilt and not yours, and don’t you ever forget this.
Anyone else notice how all these people do everything thing in their power to blame the survivors, and victims of the Elan School. They try to place the blame of their guilt, and culpability on all of us who were victimized by the Elan School and the adults that ran it.
Art Warshawsky and Danny Bennison it would do you both good to buy and read a copy of the book Duck in a Raincoat, by Author Maura Curley, you might learn what the Elan School was all about, just because you and Danny Bennison worked there doesn't mean that you know what it is or was. And you might also learn a little about yourselves, and what makes you both psychopaths that enjoy abusing survivors of the Elan School.
Or are you both still employed by Sharon Terry and her cohorts Bill Diamond, Ed McColl and the remains of that hideous relic, the Elan School? In Sharon Terry’s farewell address she made it a point that she had a license to operate the Elan School thru 2014. It wouldn’t surprise us to learn that you two assclowns still work for Sharon Terry, Ed McColl and Bill Diamond.
