Title: Anybody know how much Straight Inc cost in 1980/81?
Post by: Scarred on January 22, 2006, 10:49:00 PM
When I 1st found this website I saw a page that broke down the yearly cost for Straight, Inc. Now I can't find it. I emailed Wes Fager and he replied but not to what I was looking for. He directed me to the year end financial statements to run the program.

Does anybody know what the fee was charged for out of town kids that served all their time in foster homes? Was it different than locals?

I'm asking, and want to know, because if I ever get rich (win the lottery?), I would like to give my parents a check for that exact amount of money.

Since Straight gave them the get out of jail free card for anything they did wrong in raising me, I have never been allowed to tell them the many things they did wrong (or how it affected me). One day, I would love to give them full financial reimbursement for the full Straight bill along with a very long & detailed explanation of all the things they did wrong in raising me.

I am so sick & tired of playing this role of 41 year old woman who ruined everyones life.

Sorry for the rambling/venting. I just really want to know how much it cost financially. Did they charge by the month/year? Did it cost extra for out of towners? I know they incurred travel expenses every weekend (gas & food); but, they lodged with Tampa family. So, no hotel bills were incurred until what? I don't even remember! 3rd phase?

PS  when I got married in 1995, I made my husband  take me to Tampa for our honeymoon. I also made him stay at the hotel where my parents stayed when I was "allowed" to spend wknds with them. Anyone from the 1980/81 era may remember that brand new shiny Marriott in the business district of Tampa? They gave Straight families a discount. Always trying to retrace the steps back to hell (even on my honeymoon). Psycho!
Well, it wasn't new & shiny on my honeymoon. Thank God I married a Saint who tries to help me with this stuff that haunts me. I'm glad I found the address of the bldg (threw yall) so next time we visit the Bay area, I'll know exactly where to go to finally see it with my own eyes again.

More than that. Personally, I'm not only the scapegoat for everything that was fucked up in my family at the time, but for anything that may happen, even without my knowledge, if I do go anywhere near them to this day. I share the role w/ my fuckup brother. But he plays it quite a bit differently than I do. He'll occasionally go on a 2 or 3 year bender then start going to meetings, confess his powerlessness and start the cycle all over again. I lost about $30k in a family real estate deal and a whole lot of my innocence
last round.

And I DO mean last, not just most recent. I'm out for good. I do enjoy it when, occasionally, one of my family will just be decent and enjoy a pleasant conversation with me. But I no longer ever make much of it, it's only a matter of time till the psycho Program zombie emerges from behind the deceptively familiar and well loved face w/ daggars drawn.

I do not believe in a personal God and I have never denied this but have expressed it clearly. If something is in me which can be called religion than it is the unbounded admiration for the structure of the world so far as our science can reveal it.

i remember my mother saying that it initially cost "2500 for the life of the kid"......this is why they chose str8!compared to insurance policies
cost, this looked like a deal....str8 made sure they thought it was a deal!my parents didn't look into str8's credentials or anything....if they'done the math, they would've seen that the on
paper str8 wasn't a good deal...they never looked at the hotel cost, travel expences, living cost at the foster homes{that an out of stater/towner never stayed at permanently},clothing, toiletries etc etc......then there's the deductable on the insurance policy....say the cost at another place was 10,000....75% was taken care of by the insurnce co.....then 2500 was all they needed anyways to place us in the other place,...str8 never let them in that....the reason str8 never took insurance money, was they couldn't! it wasn't considered a full time program! hell, we were there long enough....but we didn't sleep there!...
....the most important thing that really gets me is that miller newtons credetials were never scrutinised!....they had no doctors, nursesand the food was not good either....a reputable place would've had to show on the books to be on the up and up.....be inspected for health reasons etc....its unbelievable when you think about it!
so i tip my hat off to you ....if you want to pay them back, but i can't with all honesty say thats the actual cost.....i'm sure it was way more...as time went by i'm sure most of the parents knew they had a lot of money in the "program" but by then they wanted a return on thier investment!
thats why and how i believe so many parents kept thier kids in...that and the 7 step ceramony during open meetings.....they did that just enough to keep ppl there.....my mother also told me she and my dad spent all my "college" money on my getting str8 in str8! i'm not stupid....that probably happened to alot of ppl in str8.....hippie

I would love to just cut all ties to my parents. They are toxic to me. My only other sib is a few years younger than I. She learned to be the most perfect angel in the world (ie "sneaky/snobby bitch" hiding her coke under the stearing wheel horn plate, etc). She distanced herself from me with my parents permission upon my return from Straight. My father even installed a key-lock on her bedroom door for her. My parents were so stupidly preoccupied with trying to bust me at anything (just waiting to have me put away or Bakers Acted or whatever)to see that my little sister learned to do her dirty deeds (normal teen party scene) by my mistakes (I was not sneaky about my normal teen party scene...bcuz it was totally NORMAL). They, the parents, made it abnormal by blowing it all out of proportion. If I had ever been arrested, or broke into someones house, or failed a grade I could MMAAYYBBEE understande the extremely drastic measure of Straight. As far as I'm concerned, they made me fail 11th grade and consequently drop out (later got GED & almost AS).

Thanks Girl! I think I got that you are not in contact with your parents/brother? You must not have "had" to depend on them financially after straight? I'll read it a few more times and eventually catch it. If I had not been financially dependent on them after straight, I would lost contact with them immediately. Now, it's too late to lose contact with them bcuz they are dependent on me to doctors appts, weeding their yard, etc....The sneaky bitchy sister is now Ms High Society (literally & figuratively) who burns the candle at both ends and never gets burned. Funny, she is never available to help the parents at all!!

But I'm serious about wanting to know atleast approximately how much my parents had to pay Straight to keep my locked in hell.

PS  If I'd lost 30K in a family estate, I'd fucking sue the hell out of my sister. However, I needn't worry 'bout that...considering they were financially ruined bcuz of me having to be put in Straight and all that SHIT!!!!!!!!!!!!
::soapbox:: I'm off my soap "opera" box now.

Hey Hippie. If you are right about it only costing $2500/year, then I am pretty sure that my parents exagerated the costs. But again their POOR, POOR SUFFERING & INCONVENIENCE.

I need councilling BBAAADDD! The Semblers should have to pay to have me completely fixed in the brain.

Well, Scarred, I did get along real well w/ my dad after the Program. Long story short, I was the youngest. So once I was out of the house for good, Mom started in on getting him straightened out. That lasted about a month. Eventually we talked things out. He passed back in `98; seems like just yesterday and also forever ago. I just don't talk to the rest of them.

As to the cost of the program, ya' know, I never asked. It was just part of our life in the Seed from almost as far back as I can remember. The cost of the program always has been the same; well what have ya got? They'll take cash, of course, and volunteer work at anything from fundraising to recruiting to running the business. But they most especially like powerful people who can recruit their friends and neighbors and lend their names to endorsement.

Ever wonder if W. did some kind of program there in Midland?

I am not certain, but I think it was around 2-2500 per month.  At least if thats what hippie says it was in the early eighties, thats what I was told it was in 90.  As far as i know, that was straight up "tuition" and then there was like a 300 per month food fee and then travel etc. was at the whim of the parent.

I never knew if I was an insurance case or not, but it was my understanding that if a kid copped out for longer than 30 days straight without being found, then the parents were required to pay whatever fees upfront all over again, if they wanted to re-admit their kid after that time.  I cant begin to say how I knew or heard of this, but it was my plan when I ran away.  Stay on the street for 30 days so mom couldnt afford to put me back in.  That may have been complete bullshit, but it was a great motivator.

you don't need ANYTHING that ginger, or wesley fager, or mike or of any of these bozos have to offer. if you want some information, it is true that wes does have some. but it's not without searching. if you feel that he or they had not provided what you were looking for, or it is somehow not what you sense to be true...you should look it up.

hundreds of parents were sued by straight for their monthly billing. straight ran alot of people dry when they just wanted a family that was backed by the government, they wanted to be important but couldn't pay the bill. some people are just not content to live a humble life, they want it all and they want permission to want to it all and then they want it all given to them without a fuss. they can't understand when it all goes to shit what happened and so set about placing blame where shit rolls downhill. for example, "you cost me alot of money and I gave you alot of opportunities and you just sat there and rebelled."

finally, you should look up in the court records to see if your parents got sued by straight because alot of parents did and they still lie about that shit because people are petty and they suck until they die, and even then they still suck. if your parents weren't sued, you will doubtlessly find parents who WERE sued and you can find out if you are willing to pay for the doc fees I think it is worth it. Wes seems to have done alot of that work for you but there is something to be said about fresh new research. And wes and ginger; they is like the rest of us, they sucks, too.

Antigen,

Your question about whether W. ever did a program reminded me of a book I read a few years ago called "Fortunate Son".  In it the author(whose name I can't quite recall) claims that G.W. was arrested for possession of coke(like in the 80s I'm thinkin') and became court ordered to participate in some program as a mentor( :silly: ) for inner city youth.   The state of Texas(in the form of a crooked judge) had to issue him a new drivers license in order to cover it up later.  In TX (an' pro'ly a lot of other states) your criminal record is on your drivers license.  The author of the book(was his name Hatfield ?? or somethin') later turned up dead.  Officially a suicide.  ???

Yeah Pirate, that was James Hattfield. I have two copies of the original printing before St. Martins pulled it. I didn't know the dude was gonna die, but I thought the book might be valuable someday. I've had it for sale for $100 (one copy, I'm keeping the other for reference) since it came out, not a single bite, damn it! I'd better keep my day job.

But yeah, that's just exactly the incident I was thinking of.

If we choose to violate the rights of the innocent in order to discover and act against the guilty, then we have transformed our country into a police state and abandoned one of the fundamental tenants of a free society. In order to win the war on drugs, we must not sacrifice the life of the Constitution in the battle.

the price was definatly by the "cost of living"..
this means it was different in different areas...
Atlanta must have been more....virginia by 86 is believable at 7000.....its a very expensive area to live.....geez......back in the day it was for the life of the kid.....i'm sure every parent back then loved that.....thats what made str8 so alluring to the parents....after they got huge, that fell to the way side....inflation made that impossible to do.....somtimes its very hard to believe that what started out with a group of parents that were scared to death about thier kids doing drugs back in the 70's, became a huge money machine with a bunch of branches all over the country......and the end result is a back lash of very messed up adults.....50,000 + went through this place, only a little more or less than 10,000 finished and of the graduates, honestly, how many of us are doing great? how many of us were able to really go on with life and not have residule problems....?
not many.....honestly, only the ones who had easy , "groomed for staff" programs....thats not to say there weren't staff members that didn't have easy programs, cause there were a few...but i think we all know what i mean......if you include the ppl that went through "The Newt's"
KIDS "'grams".....that number grows even greater of very scathed ppl.....of course the rest of the aftermath "we need to change the name" "'grams"
even larger yet.....the sucess rate is extremly low and the numbers of ppl that got the "huuuings"
is unreal and scary......this number compounds even more if you think of all the parents that got "huuued " too.......almost everyone,in fact in my opinion, they all got bent over and huuued...
what sucks for most of us is the denial that most of our parents and siblings carry with them to this day.....none of them were in there and the only thing they saw was results, false results.!!!
they were also "trained" to huuu us too! in my case the huuuings never quit! i've had 26 yrs of
"ok, time to bend over....huuuuuuaaaaaaagggggghhhhhhhhhh...." all of us have!.....to everyone that made str8 what it is today and those who still support it and thing/places like it, Thanks......my ass is still bleeding".......hippie{oh, by the way, around here, ppl call getting screwed over"getting huuued"...lol...its kind of funny because str8 was all about getting huuued...hippie

Whatever they charged at the door was whatever it took to hook them in. Now then, add to that the host home fees, which rarely if ever made it back to the host homes, donations, the fund raisers, the volunteer work... hell, even paid staff,  except for the big wheels, worked for less than minimum wage once you broke it down to hourly pay.

Like junkhead, "Well, what have you got?"

When a well-packaged web of lies
has been sold gradually to the masses
over generations, the truth will seem
utterly preposterous and its speaker
a raving lunatic.
