Re: Dallas Based Straights
I just emailed Wes about this thread. Here's what he's got in his page now.

"Texas: Straight-Dallas.

In 1987 the Texas Commission on Alcohol and Drug Abuse (TCADA) forced Straight to stop strapping sanitary pads and towels on kids who were "acting out." In 1989, David Tatum, a TCADA administrator, says he started receiving complaints for allegations like: staff member choked and kicked a client, a host-home father tied up a client with an automobile towing strap; a client received a broken nose but was not given medical treatment. During an investigation ending in Oct 1989 he received 15 complaints including: 5 incidents of kids restrained for trivial reasons like 'failure to sit up properly' and 'failure to move.' One staff member allegedly tied a client with a nylon rope to prevent him from escaping; another did nothing while kids scratched themselves with pieces of metal. A parent reported that a staffer hit client Chad Barnes in the face. As a result of the investigation Straight fired one paraprofessional counselor and signed an agreement order in December 1989 that only trained staffers would be allowed to restrain clients, that time-out rooms would be banned, and that host homes would be required to provide better living arrangements. In return Straight would not have to admit to any of the allegations of abuse. But in January a reporter witnessed a client being restrained. There were 2 adults and 3 kids watching 100 clients. In August 1991 TCADA informed Straight that its license would not be renewed for consistently violating the law and for failure to abide by the 1989 agreement order. Among the citations cited in the order were the unsupervised dispensing of medications, treating clients who did not meet Straight's criteria of being chemically dependent, forcing clients to sleep in beds with other clients, failing to provide medical care to injured clients, and restraining clients with nylon rope. One finding was for a foster home which gave the kids only a container to urinate in the evening. Straight announced that it was closing for economic reasons."

Re: i thought they closed all straights
Hi Chad,

  Welcome.

Well, they did close the last Straight, Incorporated operating under that name in `93. But most of the rehabs just changed their names. Straight Foundation, the education, public policy branch of Straight, Inc., changed their name to Drug Free America Foundation. Betty Sembler, cofounder of the original hell hole (after The Seed) in St. Pete, is founder and still on the BOD. She's also president of DARE, International. (I thought I had just been imagining DARE was the Program light....)

Glad you found us. Tell all your friends and enemies.

No you're not
Hey Colleen, I'm going to try and get the tape of James Lloyd's speech to you. Just to make light of things, he had then make up two name plates; one with his real name and one with the alias under which he registered because he thought we might be setting some kind of trap. And he's a middle aged white Republican man!

It was a great conference and we would have loved to have seen you there, but it's not the end of anything. We'll be having another in Orlando in December. Mean time, if you're ever in So. Florida, look me up. If you need a place to stay, we have a single in a spare room and double hide-a-bed with a decent mattress. Or lets just do lunch or something.

Funny you should say that
That's exactly the sort of thing I need for the archive! It's going in. I was wondering if ya'll would help me out with a little research on another article?

The following story, and photo-op for block monitoring that it tels about, both look like a minor rework of any of a number of such media stunts put together by a tightly knit, unimaginably well funded, carefully camaflaged conspiracy to normalize fascism; the DFAF.

I'm looking for anything, past or present, hard print or vague memory, relating to every individual, organization and project mentioned in this article. I'm going to stuff them into a database and add a search box to the search results. That way, we can wander through the x-references just by copying and pasting words from the article to see what we've got.

If this flies, I think I might do the same for different geographic locations. So please forward this out to anyone who might be interested no matter where they are?

Thanks,

Ginger

Re: Augusta, Gone
There are two kinds of people in this world; people whos lives have been somehow shaped by harsh tragedy and those you don't know very well.

I don't think kids today are any more troubled or troubling than kids any other day. I think we've just been fed on a whole lot of fear mongering and hate mongering and far too many people are falling for it.

I do have a 17 year old daughter. And it's a white knuckle ride sometimes watching her make some of the same mistakes I did. She's got our help and support if she wants it. She doesn't want it. There's simply nothing that I can do to help her without putting her at more risk than she's doing by herself. But I also know what she's made of and what it was like to be 17. I think she'll pull it out. Why, with any luck at all and go on to make new and interesting mistakes thereby impriving on my work as I try to improve on my own parents'.

Re: DARE
I contend that it never was JUST a money making scheme, though money is a big part of it. DARE is primarily a scheme to normalize and promote the snitch culture.

The announced changes make it even more like the Program than it was to begin with. Now THAT's scary!

Re: Taking over the world
Yeah, we had those raps. You didn't? DARE was THE main reason why I started looking into homeschooling 4 years ago. Turns out there are a lot of good reasons to do it, but that was the impetus... I saw what the whole zero tollerance, zero respect, zero thought mentality was doing to my older daughter and most of her friends.

Web forum hosting / Invitation and terms of use
« on: December 17, 2001, 07:42:00 PM »
Just wanted to thank you for dropping in and sort of lay out what I'm planning here.

I'm inviting anyone who's currently admining a web forum that I hang out in to set up camp over here. The main reason is that I'm just tired of waiting so long for each page load and of those pop-up javascript ads that sometimes crash my browser or freeze my system.

There will never be any charge for hosting or using these forums! I may put a 'sponsored by' ad in a footer or header or custom theme or something. But I promise no animations and no annoying pop-ups.

The other benefit is that I have access to the raw data. So, in the event that we ever have to shut this down, it'll be very easy to recover the data.

Register a username and let me know wich one so that I can upgrade your access and you can play with the admin features. Leme know what you think. If there's something you need that this gizmo doesn't do already, there's a good chance I can make it work.
