The Troubled Teen Industry / Binge drinking
« on: March 07, 2006, 01:39:00 AM »
"one drink" is equal to one ounce of hard liquor, or 12 ounces of beer, or 6 ounces of wine.

If you open a large container of beer and don't want to finish the whole thing, don't despair, there are many household uses for superfluous alcohol.

Mix beer into a beef and vegetable stew or a cheese fondue, or use it to steam mussels.  Or share some with your dog.

Champagne can be used to poach or saute fish (best with white, light fish).

My boyfriend has recently started marinating EVEYRTHING in Grey Goose vodka (beef, pork, ect...), and the meat turns out really delicious.  Especially when served with a dirty Grey Goose martini.

Bonus- stuff a Xanax into the olive of that martini, it's called a Xantini.  Your friends will marvel at your ingenuity.

I have faith that your daughter will be returned safely to you.

Although she may be witnessing or experiencing horrible things there, at least she will know that you, her mother, did not inflict this on her, purposely or not, nor did you pay someone to inflict this on her, and that you indeed want her out of this situation.

What has had the worst, and longest-lasting effect on me was knowing that my mother sent me to Provo Canyon School, ignored all "red-flags" and other signs of abuse, and left me there nearly as long as she could, hoping that I would eventually behave like a lobatomized child.

Thats really more hurtful than any of the horrible things I experienced at the hands of unqualified, incompetent, and many times, sadistic caretakers.

I am not faulting the actual missionaries who visited Provo Canyon School (well, not for the most part).

I AM faulting Provo Canyon School, for misrepresenting themselves (my parents expressely wanted to send me to a facility of no religious teachings or persuasion, which PCS assured them of).

I am also faulting PCS for permitting their under-age charges to convert and get baptized, without any sort of parental notification.  I mean, this was a place where you could not even go from one room to another without asking a staff member for permission.

This is how many of the girls started out attending Mormon services-  during the day, the girls who were being punished were made to stand for 25 minutes at a time, staring straight ahead.

I believe this is called a "stress position".

Well, these girls were told that if they agreed to attend the Mormon service, they would not only be excused from that hour or two of standing, they would also receive "credit" for that time, same as if they had actually "worked it off" in the stress position.

Plus, the Mormon missionaries were actually kind and loving, (just the opposite of PCS staff), so OF COURSE the girls were going to choose to attend services!

Just another way that PCS manipulates parents and children.

The Troubled Teen Industry / Revenge is a dish best served cold...

In most cases, I would say the absolute best revenge (on your parents) is to cut all ties with them.  Forever.  Just leave Asap (18th birthday or whenever), and exclude them entirely from your life.

Do not spend holidays with them, do not call them or tell them anything, do not even let them see their grandkids.

This can be very difficult, I mean, I certainly wasn't able to pull that off.  But it would be the best revenge.

A few things that always make me feel good are exercise (a good jog on the treadmill with my Ipod, and also swimming- particuarly in a natural body of water), as well as yoga and meditation.

When I exercise reguarly, I can really feel the endorphines (or whatever chemical) throughout the day, which feels like the opposite of depression.

Yoga seems to release negativity from my body, and meditation helps me to be calm and grounded.

If I do get really, really upset about something (animal cruelty and fur farms), I might take a small dose of xanax to relax.  (If you are having panic attacks, or become hysterical sometimes, tell your doctor about it).

I did have some depression as a teenager, before going to Provo Canyon School.  I believe this was mostly due to my situation at home, as I had a lot of issues with my mother.

This was nothing compared to the PTSD-like symptoms I experienced upon leaving PCS.

The first few years I was out, I experienced severe anxiety and crying spells.  I was "shell-shocked".

A few years later, I realized that PCS was in fact a harmful, detrimental place.  I saw that there was a reason for all the nightmares, crying, and general feelings of confusion.  After that, I did feel better.  I also felt like a HUGE weight had been lifted from me, and that was great.

A few years after that, I began studying psychology and sociology at college.  I saw how incompetent the PCS "daily living" unit staff are.  (they are not required to have any college education).

Then I went to nursing school,  where I learned about these things on a "professional" level, and then I just became angry.

I was particuarly irate at my parents, for not doing their homework before sending me there (to their credit, there was no internet back then, and they are not medical professionals.  Also, my mother has apologized profusely).  I just think they should have investigated more thoroughly, before commiting me there, and also that they should have been more keen to the signs of abuse and all the "red flags" and the dysfunction of the program.

While I have (generally) found Mormons to be nice people, there is something which makes me question there ethics:

I was at Provo Canyon School in the 90's.  The Mormons came every Sunday and held services.  Mostly none of the girls there were Mormon, but we were encouraged (by PCS staff) to attend services (never mind the fact that my parents had been assured that PCS had NO religious affiliation).

Anyway, many girls ended up going to their services.  The Mormons would also come in on other days to meet with girls (individually).

What I found most disturbing was the number of girls who actually CONVERTED and got BAPTIZED while at PCS.  Jewish girls, Catholic girls...

These girls' parents had no idea this was going on!  These parents entrusted their children to PCS, and PCS allowed these minor children to be converted and baptized and did not even notify nor obtain permission from their parents!   All this while insisting that PCS has no religious affiliations!

I do make fun of Christians.

But these Muslim protesters are behaving just as ridiculously as our Christians here.

I don't think that my ethnic group is superior, have never thought that (at least, not in comparison with those in other countries)...oh, until I saw these groups of people on the news, burning buildings in response to A CARTOON!

It actually restored some of my faith in our way of life.

I mean, half of America (the red parts) may living in the Dark Ages, but nobody would start violent riots over a cartoon.

Again, I ask...who thinks these people are ready for democracy??  Only an ethno-centric idiot would think so.

Look how these people react to a free press!  As for "free elections"-  look at that nut who runs Iran!

Saddam doesn't look so bad now, does he...

I don't know...there are some pretty crazy Christian fundamentalists out there... Anyone saw that show "Wife Swap" the other night?

Those people who home school their 8 children because they don't want them taking sex ed at school.  20% of their kids $2 allowance goes to "God".

And they apparantely are living in such poverty that people leave bags of used clothing outside their van at church, to which the father proclaims "God has provided again!"

Their 15 y.o. son stated that he's glad he doesn't go to real school, because he doesn't "have to deal with the drugs and the alcohol and the cigarettes".

I wonder, where are these kids going to go once they are 18?  Or 25?

Or perhaps you have seen that family who was profiled on the Discovery Channel- the Dugger family, I think.  They have 17 KIDS!!   And they are living in a house with 2 bathrooms!

The father was offered a position in the Arkansas state Congress, or something like that, even though he has no college education whatsoever!  Purely to promote the Christian-fundamentalist agenda.   Their kids are home-schooled, also.

Their daughters are not allowed to wear pants, they wear only long skirts.  Check out their website, even their bathing suits involve long sleeves and skirts.

It also seems they are feeding their kids slop!  Their website lists "favorite recipes", all of which involve tater tots and lots of processed foods, lacking nutritional value.  Seems they don't eat much fresh fruit and veggies.

I guess none of their "moral values" include teaching children about healthy eating habits, nor do they "value" responsible family and social planning and only having as many children as you can adequetly provide for.

Online NY Times used to be free to all.  Now you have to pay for most articles, but it's cool cause if you are a subscriber, you can search for and access any old articles from their paper- up to 100 per month!

Frank Rich is my favorite op-ed writer.  But he's on an extended break now, to write a book.
