My personal belief is there is no such thing as responsible drinking for a person that has been diagnosed with a dependence to alcohol.However since Daytop is licensed by the State of NY as an Alcohol and Substance Abuse treatment program, it should be educating its clients on physiological and psychological effects of continued use of alcohol and also teaching them some decisional balancing skills, neither of which were being taught when I left there in 2000. It is ultimately the choice of the individual whether or not to continue using any substance. My statement regarding many of the upper management in Daytop is true and that is why it will be a long time for anything meaningful to change. :wave:

Okay anybody reading most of the rantings in most of these forums come to the conclusion that there are a lot of bad programs out there. But I don't see any solutions for these kids. I'd like to here something about where to send these kids with all the severe mental health issues and severe behavioral problems. And I don't want to hear just send them to a mental institution. There are far more abuses going on at these so called medical facilities then one can possibly imagine. I'd like to see specific places to send some of these kids so that parents that are at their wits end can have a glimmer of hope. It's one thing to get up on your soapbox and proclaim to the world how your opinion is the only one that matters because of how many degrees you have in this specialty area but its a different story to actually bring a solution to the table. So lets hear solutions only in this thread please. :wave:

One of the biggest problems with Daytop throughout it's history has been the one size fits all theory of treatment. While some of the bm techniques used with adults do work, I am a perfect example of it, it must never be applied to some populations, especially adolescents. Also the unwillingness of some of the old timers to own up to the fact that they hurt more people than they helped will continue until they either retire or join the ranks of some of their peers looking for new livers because they have stuck to the belief that they can drink responsibly. These are the people from a time when in order to graduate Daytop you had to go out and have a drink with the director that are in the upper management of Daytop. Unfortunately there are some that blindly followed them and continue to work there in some Director roles. I'd say there has been much growth in many of the staff that truely want to make a difference but they are fighting seemingly unsurmountable odds when dealing with those with tunnel vision. I left Daytop six years ago but keep a watchful eye on the organization. I know their secrets and they know who I am and I don't fear them whatsoever. I know they are a very powerful and influential butI also know that I have become a better person in spite of putting up with some of their antics. :wave:

I guess it gets confusing when you put the T in TBS because that is a term I can only find in the USA. There are lots of boarding schools in Europe, most notably in England.

Daytop Village / Population increase

Daytop has been in financial peril for years. I can remember back in the 90's when they had all the staff scrambling to keep the beds full and had difficulty making their payroll. They used to hold out checks for days and some even had their checks bounce. Its incredible that they are still having problems but it is mostly due to the mismanagement of funds, usually by uneducated program directors with no clue as to how to manage multi million dollar budgets, and egos so sky high as to be unable to admit they need help. Funny but that's what they get on their high horse and preach to the masses to do.

Anybody that knows anything about the facility in question knows if something works that changes even one of these kids...use it. Giddings is a Level 6 Facility. You will not find your snot nosed kids of wealthy parents looking to fix their kids at any cost. There you will find murderers, rapists, arsonists, and yes child molesters. And remember they are all kids. So if something works on them who is anyone on this board to say it shouldn't be done. Do you think they will end up more fucked in the head or something?...sheesh!

It sucks when decent, hardworking people get screwed over like that. Because that means pricks like us don?t stand a chance.
