To bring our stories into the public eye is to invite ridicule and scorn.  I think most of us here believe that to be worthwhile if it can prevent this from happening to more children.  Many of our fellow survivors may not think so, or they may have more to lose.  Or they might be dead, insane or in jail, which can be a self fulfilling prophecy after the program has convinced your parents that you are a lost cause (speaking from experience).  I only very recently got my shit together enough to have a computer and only then did I find this community of survivors.  Of course, I was a "cop-out", I ran as soon as they moved me to phase 2, after 5 months on phase 1.  I got all of the "breaking down" and none of the "building up".  I will never believe that that was healthy for anyone.  Motivating?  Beltlooping?  All those kids carving their arms?  Those goddamned songs?  Nope, we are not the crazy ones, even if it does sometimes seem that way.  Incidentally, I am not even one of those 50,000, I was in LIFE.

That sounds about right, there were alot of kids at Life from the Lakeland/Winterhaven area.  I think I even remember them talking about opening a program up there, not sure though, memory is fuzzy.

I was in life I think from 83-86.  My brother was also, for a short time, I believe in 1986.  They kicked him out for going to church, knowing it would violate his probation.  He took his own life in 1991.

I can't say I remember much about the program, I guess some of the steps, a few songs, belt loops, sleeping by the door, RSAs, Ms. Peggy (I think she was a grad of LIFE).

Why did it shut down?

I am sorry for the loss of your brother, did his name begin with S or C?  I was in Life for 5 months in '85 - '86 and I can only remember two brother/sister pairs.  Of course, most of us survivors have holes in our memories and I am no exception.  I am glad you found this site, welcome to fornits.  I was a fifteen year old boy from up north, in case you're wondering, red/blonde hair.

Not sure why they shut down, but I can guess.  Many things they were doing were illegal under florida law, like holding kids against their will until they sign the intake papers.  Or allowing teenagers to put other teens in restraints.  Or Mrs. Pete's habit of dragging kids across the floor by their hair, take your pick.

I think it is nice to see someone fighting back for a change, instead of just continuing to bend over and get screwed.  Wall Street made a killing off of the misfortune they brought onto all of us.  Nobody went to jail, bonuses were still collected.  Corporate profits soared.  Ajax is right, the financial elite started this fight and have mostly won it, at least for now.  BK, you must be one of the lucky ones who still has something to lose.  If they protest or demonstrate in my city, I'll be there.  Too bad I don't have a mortgage to not pay.

Good luck Stack,
If I wasn't an atheist I'd be praying for you.  And thank you for posting your story, I was in LIFE, not the seed, but your description was eerily accurate, minus Art Barker.  We had George Ross (who was almost never there) and Helen Peterman (who was almost always there).  Please keep yourself safe.

This girls parents have failed her, allowed her to be abused “emotionally, verbally, physically and sexually”.  What does her mother propose to rectify that failure?  Punishment for the abused girl.  Of course.  It almost sounds like her mother really just wishes that she was allowed to just kill her.  I spent over an hour yesterday perusing that forum, it was like being back in the program.  What a vile collection of self righteous hypocrites.

“Hello, notoriously abusive residential treatment center?  I have a daughter who has been horribly abused and now I view her as broken.  No matter how much I punish her she absolutely refuses to pretend to be happy and problem-free.  Also, as her mother I should tell you that I think my daughter is a murderer who will probably try to kill you in your sleep.  She is also a master manipulator and con artist so you should not take anything she says seriously.  Keep her as long as you have to, I don’t want to have to be bothered with her problems at all.”

Hyde Schools / Re: PLEASE HELP!!! Should I send my son to Hyde???

If you want your son to be completely demoralized and have his self respect brutally ripped from him, then yes, by all means, send him away.  Those people do not care about him, they only care about your money.  They can ruthlessly bully and intimidate him into conformity for you, but that will cause psychological damage which will follow him throughout his life.  My mother did it to me, you do not want to do that to your son.  There is a whole forum full of Hyde School threads here, here is one of them;

I found Whooter to be a useful tool, a stand-in for my mother as I formulated and rehearsed the conversation with her that was 25 years overdue.  He was also a shining example of the kind of people who work in and champion this industry; sadistic, self-righteous, cold-hearted opportunists who have nothing but contempt for the people they claim to want to "help".  On the other hand, he caused many people here a great deal of emotional distress and tarnished the credibility of everyone who posts here, ESPECIALLY with all that disgusting porn, which he consistently blamed on one of us.  Fuck him, good riddance.

I noticed that study is posted only on Aspen Ed marketing sites.  It doesn't appear in any reputable publications anywhere on the 'net.  It was never peer reviewed or published either.  It's a marketing tool.  And some of the programs in it were charged with abuse and shut down.

See the truth for yourself.

Just Google it for the truth is all I'm saying.

I think we agree here.  The readers should look at all the information the can get and view both sides of the issue.  Here is the original study as presented to the APA:

Residential Treatment Outcome-Study

I had to force quit my browser just to get off of the site that Whooter's link takes you to.  After several minutes it had loaded one paragraph, so I gave up.  I don't know why I bother, I keep thinking that he might finally come up with a valid point one day.

I CANNOT believe Kris Kennedy's "testimonial" is still up there! Her son, Patrick, went to HLA (not Ridge Creek School) and HE COMMITTED SUICIDE AFTER HE LEFT!!! What kind of success story is that?????

It seems that he did well at HLA, he graduated and went on to college after HLA and was involved in his community.

Actually it was not suicide he died a couple of years after he left HLA peacefully at home:

KENNEDY,, PATRICK WAYNE Passed away peacefully at his home on October 16, 2006. Patrick was born July 8, 1987 in Tulsa, Oklahoma and brought much joy and happiness to all who were blessed to know him. He is survived by his parents Michael and Kristi Kennedy and sisters Alex and Erin all of Dallas, Texas. Maternal grandparents are Bob and Marg McElroy of Comanche, Texas. He is also survived by his aunt, Mitzi Patin, precious cousins Jake and Luke, his nanny of 19 years Ester Rich, all of Dallas, Texas, and many other aunts, uncles and cousins from Dublin, Texas. He was predeceased by his paternal grandparents, Joe and Pat Kennedy of Dublin, Texas. Patrick loved life and always had a huge smile for those around him. He truly loved his family and friends to the fullest and was loved by the many people he touched in return. He was so kind to all and his compassion for those he met each day was unsurpassed. Patrick had a zest for life and a passion for music. When he sang, his voice produced such a celebration of life and today we rejoice that he is singing with the angels at the throne of God. Patrick was active in the Boy Scouts and a member of the Order of the Arrow. He was involved in choir and received several awards during high school. Patrick graduated from Hidden Lake Academy in Georgia and was attending Collin County Community College. He was a member of The Heights Baptist Church. Services will be held Thursday, October 19, 2006 at 1:00 pm at The Heights Baptist Church, Richardson, Texas. Graveside services and burial will be at the Gardens of Memories in Comanche, Texas at 1:00 pm on Friday, October 20, 2006.

That obit was probably written by the same parents who sent him to HLA.  I couldn't help but notice that there is no cause of death mentioned at all.  No "heroic struggle against cancer or MS or whatever".  So what was the cause of death Whooter?  And where is the link to that obit?

Because brainwashing is such an invasive form of influence, it requires the complete isolation and dependency of the subject, which is why you mostly hear of brainwashing occurring in prison camps or totalist cults. The agent (the brainwasher) must have complete control over the target (the brainwashee) so that sleep patterns, eating, using the bathroom and the fulfillment of other basic human needs depend on the will of the agent. In the brainwashing process, the agent systematically breaks down the target's identity to the point that it doesn't work anymore. The agent then replaces it with another set of behaviors, attitudes and beliefs that work in the target's current environment.

...

That is from Lifton's book, which is 50 years old.  I daresay that today they have refined and perfected it to the point that total control may be accomplished while still presenting the appearance of freedom.  The main target is always the parents anyway, once they brainwash them, then they have the child's entire world under their control.  And of course the parents came to these places looking for help because they were desperate, which made them perfect potential cult recruits.  The parents are the child's only recourse from an abusive or insane program, if they are program fanatics too, then it doesn't matter how many "date nights" they are allowed to EARN (and how do they earn them, I wonder?), you are still controlling their whole world and they have no escape from their tormentors.

Then state it as your opinion instead of stating it as fact. "They tend to use drugs and alcohol more often to cope and have higher incidences of suicide and suicide attempts."  requires a citation to support the claim if you're gonna state it  like that.

Well, it isnt really my opinion.  Its based on reading I have done on the subject.

The Democrats are particularly hypocritical when it comes to this. they almost uniformly promote policies that raise the cost of labor in the US - higher taxes, onerous regulations, card check, and the like. Yet they seem to be flummoxed by the fact that jobs are then being outsourced. Since they can't seem to recognize their fault in it, they blame Republicans - without proof.

Projection if I ever saw it.

Yes, forget about the eight years Bush II was in office.  Forget about what he did with a SURPLUS that we had.  Forget about the ridiculous wars he got us into (which, incidentally, the GOP wasn't concerned AT ALL about the national debt then).  Forget about the ruins that he left for other people to clean up.  And while we're at it....Damn Obama to hell for not fixing it all RIGHT NOW!

Although I am pissed that, yet again, the Dems & Obama have NO BALLS!  They should have stood up to this tax bullshit and forced the GOP to either filibuster it or go back to their bankers, oops - I mean backers and explain to the top 2% that they're gonna have to suck it up a little longer.  I'm sure that 2% of the highest earners are really hurting right now!  ::)

I think if democrats could start supporting their local businesses more and not viewing profits as a dirty word the businesses may start to stick around and put more Americans to work.

I do see your point Anne,  but lets move onto the gay issue.  Do you think there is any validity in the comment that Gays are costing the taxpayers more money than heterosexuals?

...

It seems to me that gay people have less children, and therefore claim less deductions on their taxes, they also use the public school system less than heterosexuals.  How do you think they cost us money?

Business Experts Have Explained That Barbara Boxer’s and the Democrat Party’s Job-Killing Policies Are To Blame For Jobs Leaving America:
Job-Killing Policies, Including Higher Corporate Tax Rates And More Regulation, Are To Blame For Companies Outsourcing Labor To Other Countries.
The list of companies who have given up on the United States as a viable place to successfully run their business’ both small, medium and large is mind numbing.

Additional reasons U.S. companies outsource is that our own government pursues policies that drive investment and job creation offshore: excessive taxes, needless regulations, lengthy permit processes, a decreasing supply of U.S. citizens with technical and engineering degrees, and a general governmental misunderstanding of how to support private-sector jobs.

Neither Obama or his current administration have a clue on how to create jobs in the private sector and equally important driving them out of the country.

You can give birth at home in your bathtub instead of going to a hospital, it is much cheaper, but is it wiser?  For that matter, is it morally acceptable to profit from the lack of human rights in less developed nations?  Many companies have moved to China because the common people there are basically slaves who work for pennies an hour and have no rights.  We have taxes and regulation and permit procedures for a reason.  Maybe there would be more U.S. citizens with technical and engineering degrees if the government had the money to provide grants for them to people who otherwise could not afford college.  But of course the government does not have money to do much of anything because the super rich corporations DO NOT PAY TAXES.
