Facility Question and Answers / Children Made To Order
« on: September 28, 2007, 12:19:26 AM »
Same applies to programs. Just plug in program for drugs.

Forward, from a co heart
It is parents who are a major force behind drugging kids. We live in a society where any deviation from the norm is defined as a symptom of a
brain-disorder that can be corrected by the RIGHT cocktail of drugs. In fact virtually any signs of autonomy are now derfined as mental illnesses

All parents find it difficult to adjust to the natural vicissitudes of
dependence and independence of their children--from the "terrible twos" to adolescence. But now parents do not have to adjust. Children can be made to order.

Soon they will be tailored to expectations in a testtube. Now the process
begins at age 2 or 3 where babies who cry too much, or perhaps show too much initiative can be drugged into submission.

In the Soviet Union political dissidents were a nuisance to the government
and thus locked up in psych wards and drugged. Today in America asimilar process happens to kids who are a nuisance to their busy parents Parents are collaborating with psych industry and government. Chilldren who do not show sufficient docility will be drugged into submission. But you see it's all done out of love.

In the absence of resistance among parents to drugging their children I
don't see how drugging can be stopped. In most cases drugging today is voluntary and it grows astronomically. If parents were not buying it it would not be happening.

From the Nugget

Children should not be humiliated

I want to comment on an incident that I observed at Wal-Mart on Sept. 10 shortly after 5 p.m. Standing next to the parking lot was a young boy (about age 9) holding a sign stating: "I have been rude and disrespectful to my mother. I called my teacher 'stupid'."

His mother was holding a sign: "Fed-up."

When we went to speak with the mother, she was eager to talk regarding her difficulties with her son, that his behavior was out of control, that she had to frequently leave her job to pick him up from school due to his disruptive behavior, that he was on the verge of being kicked out of school.

My impression, as a retired psychiatric social worker and concerned citizen, is that this mother was crying out for help.

I called DFACs (the Department of Family and Children's Services) to get their advice on such a situation. I was NOT going to make a specific report with the mother's name, as I did not want to escalate the immediate situation. The call was made shortly after 5 p.m. I let the phone ring 11 times with no answer nor even a recorded message.

Is there no coverage after 5 p.m. or on weekends re: possible child abuse?

Next I called the sheriff's department who told me that the incident had been reported and that no officer would investigate because the woman was not doing anything "wrong." When I asked her about DFACs, she said that they are not there after 5 p.m.

Even more shocking was when I consulted the Welfare Information Gateway on the internet for the definition of child abuse in the state of Georgia. Out of the 50 states, Georgia is one of two states that does NOT include in our state laws that emotional abuse is considered child abuse.

The maltreatment of children is a wider issue than this isolated incident.

Many parents are frustrated with behavior problems of their children.

As we were talking with this mother, other people honked car horns and shouted: "Way to go! Good!" and other expressions condoning this action.

However public humiliation of children does not resolve their anger and acting-out behavior.

Long ago in colonial America, the troublemakers were punished in the center of town for the entire public to see. Locked in wooden frameworks in the town square, the town people scoffed at them.

Colonial Americans looked on themselves as moral and religious people, just as many of our contemporary American citizens do.

But is public humiliation a part of God's moral code?

What would Jesus do?

Sincerely,
Holly Brannon

The Troubled Teen Industry / Miller Collaborates with NATSAP etal
« on: September 18, 2007, 08:13:13 AM »
September 17, 2007

From Sharon Laney, President of NATSAP…

In February 2007, I became the President of National Association of Therapeutic Schools and Programs. If you attended the 2007 Conference in La Jolla, you heard a lot about the Miller Bill. If not then I will highlight some of the points and issues of this bill.

Last year Representative Miller, California, who was a member of the Education committee, introduced a bill to "Stop Abuse of Children in Programs." Several advocacy groups have jumped onto the topic and bill. For us in Therapeutic programs and schools, we also want to stop abuse that has occurred with a very few programs within the Industry.

Representative Miller is now the Chair of the committee and the bill is currently with his Investigative Counsel. What is currently occurring is NATSAP, NAPHS, and OBHIC are working with Representative Miller on the language of the bill. He has been very receptive in allowing feedback. We are doing a lot of work behind the scenes to offer revisions to the bill that will deal with Abuse yet not hurt the Industry. As the current bill is written, it wants to move the Investigative Process from a State level to a Federal level. In our opinion, this is a state responsibility and should remain so. It also addresses Interstate Compact. If passed it could prevent a referral from Utah going to an out of state placement without going through Utah interstate compact then through the compact of the state where the program is located, prior to admissions. This will slow the admissions process completely and impact our Industry negatively.

In light of these challenges to our industry, I have requested and been granted, a flexible schedule that will allow me time to focus on NATSAP and the issues at hand. In order to fulfill my responsibilities as NATSAP's President, I will not concurrently maintain my duties as COO of Three Springs. I will continue my work on some Three Springs special assignments between my NATSAP duties. My day to day responsibilities have been delegated to very capable members of the executive management team.

I am not sure how long the critical NATSAP work will take. We are now thinking that these hearings may start sometime after the first of the year. In the meantime, we are starting to meet with other committee members as well as solicit help from the Independent Education Consultant organization and others.

I am grateful to be allowed time to work more closely with NATSAP in order to play an integral role in activities which focus on addressing the serious implications of the Miller Bill.

September 10, 2007

Please join the students, staff and families of Excel Academy in welcoming Liz Beach as the new Program Director. Liz comes to Excel from central Massachusetts where she worked with the state justice system. She is a licensed chemical dependency counselor, has a master's in justice administration, and is working on her Ph.D. on the correlation between PTSD and substance abuse within the Massachusetts State Parole system. Liz has over 20 years of working with resistant clientele and the at-risk population, and brings a tremendous amount of experience, substance abuse recovery knowledge, and energy to Excel Academy.

As a member of the Excel Academy senior leadership team, Liz will oversee the program department including front line and supervisory staff, substance abuse programming, behavior management plans, staff training, residential life and student activities. Liz will work in conjunction with Excel's director of counseling, Scott Spaw, in formulating an internal counseling services component as well as implementing evidence-based practices to serve the unique needs of the Excel Academy student population. Adding group counseling, on and off-site AA/NA meetings, individual counseling, and other industry-standard therapeutic elements will be a focus in the coming months. We also will continue to emphasize our AA/NA-based 12 step approach, rigorous college preparatory academics, a structured environment to help our students make the right choices, the development of healthy relationships, and life-long recovery.

"I am so honored to be a part of Excel Academy and Aspen Education Group and feel privileged to work with these bright and dedicated students and staff," said Liz. "My focus will be to give our students and families a supportive and healthy experience during their 12-24 months with us so that they are able to make use of community-based resources    and enjoy positive outlets to support their recovery and life after Excel."

Dear Friends,

It has now been ten months since the merger of Aspen Education Group with CRC Health Group. The integration has gone very well and I am personally very pleased with the support that CRC has given us to date. I believe as much today as I did when we completed the merger in November 2006 that CRC is the right "fit" for Aspen and its 1,700 employees. I am quite excited about the combination of Aspen with CRC, as the larger company provides even greater resources for innovation of new programs and ways to assist more families, as well as provide for our staff even greater career path opportunities.

With the integration now completed, I have decided to announce my retirement as President of Aspen Education Group, effective September 30. I have spent the last 18 years taking the initial idea of providing alternatives to troubled youth and their families, which began with Mount Bachelor Academy, and led the growth of Aspen to what it is today with the help of many, many talented people along the way. It is the right time for me to retire.   I also strongly believe that the right leadership is in place to lead Aspen forward, as Jim Dredge will be replacing me as President of Aspen Education Group. Jim has worked closely with me and our senior management team for the past 3+ years as Chief Operating Officer. Other key senior managers will continue to report to Jim as they do currently. Jim's leadership style and integrity will give Aspen strong leadership moving forward.

But I am not totally going away! I will remain on the Board of Directors of CRC Health Group as Vice-Chairman of the Board, and will continue to have a strong voice advocating for services for troubled youth and their families.

In that role, I will be working part time in several important areas that will hopefully have a positive impact on the future success of Aspen/CRC and the families that we serve. I also have plans to work on some other non-profit and corporate Boards where I can make a positive contribution. So you will likely continue to see me at some of the national conferences like IECA and NATSAP in this new role. I know I will miss the regular interaction with the highly dedicated and passionate staff of Aspen, as well as the interaction I have had over the years with many of you. But looking to the future I feel very comfortable in knowing that Aspen is in very good hands with its leadership team and the stewardship of CRC. I believe strongly in Aspen's mission and will continue to vigorously support, although in a more time-limited way, all that we do for kids and their families, as we have already done so for over 27,000 families since we first began the first Aspen program. I look forward to your continued support of the work that we do for your families so that we can continue to provide Help for Today and Hope for Tomorrow.

Tacitus' Realm / Bush has bad day at Sydney Opera House
« on: September 09, 2007, 11:13:08 PM »
By TOM RAUM, Associated Press Writer
Fri Sep 7, 6:49 AM ET

SYDNEY, Australia - President Bush had a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day at the Sydney Opera House.

He'd only reached the third sentence of Friday's speech to business leaders, on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum, when he committed his first gaffe.

"Thank you for being such a fine host for the OPEC summit," Bush said to Australian Prime Minister John Howard. :silly:

Oops. That would be APEC, the annual meeting of leaders from 21 Pacific Rim nations, not OPEC, the cartel of 12 major oil producers.

Bush quickly corrected himself. "APEC summit," he said forcefully, joking that Howard had invited him to the OPEC summit next year (for the record, an impossibility, since neither Australia nor the U.S. are OPEC members). :silly:

The president's next goof went uncorrected — by him anyway. Talking about Howard's visit to Iraq last year to thank his country's soldiers serving there, Bush called them "Austrian troops." :silly:

That one was fixed for him. Though tapes of the speech clearly show Bush saying "Austrian," the official text released by the White House switched it to "Australian."

Then, speech done, Bush confidently headed out — the wrong way. :silly:

He strode away from the lectern on a path that would have sent him over a steep drop. Howard and others redirected the president to center stage, where there were steps leading down to the floor of the theater.

The event had inauspicious beginnings. Bush started 10 minutes late, so that APEC workers could hustle people out of the theater's balcony seating to fill the many empty portions of the main orchestra section below — which is most visible on camera.

Even resettled, the audience remained quiet throughout the president's remarks, applauding only when he was finished.

A logistical glitch added to the woes.

APEC security workers would not allow the members of the media who travel in Bush's motorcade to enter the Opera House along with him. This even though the journalists allowed into the president's entourage are extensively screened and guarded by the Secret Service, which has more stringent security standards than about any operation in the world. And even though they always accompany him into public events.

As a result, while Bush spoke, the traveling media cooled its heels outside the landmark Opera House, shooting pictures and watching boats in the harbor.

Cops: Dad Arrested After Son Found Living Outside
(CBS 11 News) JOHNSON COUNTY Johnson County sheriff's deputies found a 12-year-old boy living in squalor conditions just outside his parent's home.

Officers say on September 2, they went to the 2900 block of E. FM 916 near Cleburne to conduct a welfare check. Reports indicate witnesses had seen the boy outside the residence for at least four days and nights.

According to police, the boy had been living outside under a dilapidated travel trailer.

When he was found, police say he had insect bites all over his body and was covered with fleas.

The boy told police that during that time, he had been fed peanut butter sandwiches and drank from a water hose. He said the sandwiches made him sick.

"We wouldn't do our dogs that way," said neighbor Rojean Granthan.

The child was taken from the home by Child Protective Services and placed under the care of family members.

Paul Schmidtke, the boy's father, was arrested and charged with injury to a child. He posted his $100,000 bond and returned home.

Injury to a child? Peanut butter and jelly. Potable water. Kid doesn't know how lucky he was. Damned ironic and a double standard that a program can subject kids to worse, even kill them, and walk scott free.

Schmidtke told police the incident was not abuse. He said that his son couldn't live under the rules of his household, so he put him outside.

Mr. Schmidtke, if you believe your son would benefit from that kind of abuse and punishment.. err BM, you must follow the proper procedure and pay tens of thousands of dollars to a wilderness program or TBS. Only under the guise of therapy can one subject a child to such 'treatment'. You screwed up by labeling it 'discipline'... remember next time.... it's 'therapy'.

The sheriff's office also plans to press charges on the child's step mother.

The travel trailer. Bet there's a bunch of kids that would've loved to have such luxurious accomodations.

Wilderness Therapy Programs for Troubled Teens
http://tinyurl.com/283jug

Short-term wilderness Therapy programs have a high influence on behavior and also can help teenagers get back on right track. These programs normally last between 30 and 60 days. These outdoor wilderness programs include long-established therapeutic modalities into a wilderness journey experience. Student’s camps in the desert, mountains, or other natural areas, learn how to make their food, how to gather water, and how to burn fire without matches. The natural surroundings dictate teamwork among participants, which helps to build positive peer relationships. Wilderness therapy program is established on the basic principle that nature serves as the vital teacher, unable to be manipulated by defiant teenagers. When stressed teenagers are detached from the home and find themselves among their peers in the wilderness program, they quickly learn that collaboration and liability for their behaviors will make the wilderness experience a satisfying one. The presence of therapists gives teenagers the chance to discuss their anxiety and problems, not only with a qualified adult, but with their fellow adolescents who area struggling with similar issues. A wide variety of teens and adolescents attend these Wilderness therapy program. The characteristics most commonly reported by parents who choose to send their kids are: Disobedient Unmanageable Unmotivated Rebellious Oppositional Defiant Willful Hostile Lying If you are irresolute that your teenager needs a therapeutic program, please contact an Admissions Counselor at the program you are interested in.
