I just sent that off to Ried.

Fundamentalist zealots
Hi Face,

I read this a few days ago, but haven't gotten a chance to respond. Mostly, I've been hitting the books (and newspapers, and usually ignored tee vee stations, and discussion forums, street-corner bullshit sessions, etc.) and struggling to elucidate the implications of recent events on our issue.

I'm pleased to see that level heads seem to be prevailing in DC for the time being, DEA and other drug law enforcement assets have been pulled off of their normal duties in order to help track down Al Qeda(sp?) cells.

OTOH, there's already rumbling from the far right along the lines of stepping up counter-drug efforts asif, somehow, now that we're under attack, we can now win the War On (people who use certain unpatentable) Drugs through force and coercion where we couldn't before.

My priority right now is to try and interject into the dialog the idea that we can no longer afford to support the purist delusions of a Drug (that they don't sell) Free anything. We MUST reverse the flow of money away from the black market thugs and into the cash registers of hard working business men who will pay taxes on these sales and who will NOT fund terrorists. 70% of adults surveyed will consistently cop to some lifetime illicit drug use. We can no longer afford to marginalize them, far less keep them in prison.

Basically, our bane, these programs and groups, are potentially the Taliban of the fundamentalist conservative factions in this country. We truely know how crazy these people are and where they're likely to lead us if our government takes counsel from them. I think we must get the word out far and wide in an effort to avert the disaster of a full blown holy war between the fundamentalist zealots of the east and our own, home grown fundamentalist zealots of the west.

Sarasota in `84????
Hi, I was in Sarasota from the day it opened in around November or December of `80 till Oct of `82. I was under the impression that the Sarasota branch closed down for good in summer of `83. A of former Straightlings went over to George Ross' LIFE program, that started happeneing at least as early as early `83 as my parents tried to put me there after I turned 18.

There are a bunch of news items in the news archive at http://fornits.com/anonanon/'>fornits.com/anonanon/ But I don't know anything about what was actually going on there after I left. I never kept in touch with anyone. My mother stayed involved, as I understand it, but I was a split so she wouldn't really associate with me or tell me the truth if she even knew it.

There are so many subtle variations of definition of these words. I know that the Canadian Supreme Court issued a ruling (or maybe an opinion?) to the effect that the Canadian constitution does not support arresting citizens for mere posession. Doesn't mean it's legal, they could still get a ticket, fine, court date, etc. Just not be arrested.

I saw a piece on one of the news magazines awhile back where they were busting grow houses in Vancouver but not prosecuting the growers. They do the same thing here sometimes, only in the US they also confiscate the property of the person who was never even accused, far less convicted, of any crime.

As de dawg chases his tail.

Not only that, but he looked like an easy target. Several major latin language newspapers had the story (that's where he got it) but they could easily defend against a suit. He can't do it as easily. It's a baseless suit, but it still takes some money to prove that it's baseless.

Regardless, they can't sue us all.

Anyone up for some newspeak and jaberwockey? See
California DARE Days, 2001

I don't know about ya'll, but this sort of thing really burns me up. DARE is  NOT effective! (unless, by effective, you mean profitable) They most certainly do  NOT provide accurate information about alcohol and other drugs (can't even acknowledge in plain terms that alcohol is a drug, forchristsake!) And it does not improve self esteem. The only study that I know of that even examined that last question found a slight incidence of  lowered self esteem among DARE graduates!

Recently, some diplomat or other, I forget which one, declared the US as the Taliban of international drug policy. That is so true. I don't know if any of ya'll are aware of it or not, but Canada has decriminalized MJ, whether for medical or recreational use. And So. American state governors as well as national leaders, who haven't been able to come together on  anything for the past 50 - 100 years, have come together on one point; we  must end the drug war. You won't read or hear about in in the US media unless a lot more people start pressuring our own local papers and broadcast stations to cover the damned story.

If you want to know anything about what's going on down there, see Narco News Al Giordano, a rather well respected international journalist, has been translating selected news items from Mexican, Colombian and other latin language newspapers for about 2 years now. Seems to be working. He's now being sued by BANAMEX Bank for translating spanish news items into English and sending them to US journalists and his regular readership base.

72 Hour Law - Implimentation
In 1980 or `81, I had a completely different experience with a very similar kind of law. I'd landed up in Youngstown, Ohio. Someone who'd given me a ride had talked me into going to a timeout house to try and get some help getting established somewhere instead of just wandering aimlessly as I had been.

At the time, Ohio had a 48 hour law, but it was enforced a little differently. A runaway kid could stay any place they were welcome for up to 48 hours before any adult in charge had to rat them out. A lot of the kids in this timeout house made a lifestyle of just packing up their kits and moving from one house to another every other night.

The counselors there gave me a short interview, determined that I probably wasn't dangerous, invited me to stay and get some sleep and good food and asked that I volunteer for something on the chore list. They also let me call long distance to talk to my sister. The doors were not locked, there was no kind of coercion at all. I didn't care much for sharing sleeping quarters with half a dozen strangers. But that was the worst of it.

Also, I'd like to add that in all the time I spent hitchhiking around the country, mostly with interstate truck drivers, probably 4 or 5 months alltogether, not once did any pimp try to get control of me. Oh sure, I got the put out or get out ultimatum a few times. And it really did suck having to get out and walk in the freezing rain. But that was about the worst of that.

That's why I really don't give much credence to all these wild stories about 13 year old crack-whores. I know they exist, but I don't think the problem is widespread. I spent a good deal of time with habitual runaways and never saw any of that kind of thing. Mostly, they're just kids trying to find some fun and a dry place to sleep while they wait out their time till they're allowed to walk around free and hold jobs and apartments like real live humans.

Anyone who really wants to help runaway kids need only secure a commisary license and a building suitable for a rooming house. Lots of churches and private philanthropy organizations support youth hostiles like this. In the old days, they weren't even all that stigmatic, as teenaged kids and young adults used to go traveling 'just because', not as runaways.

Now, I haven't seen how this 72 hour law written. But if it's already on the books and if it's anything like some of the laws here, maybe the best strategy is to promote proper, beneficial implimentation while exposing and dunning AARC-style abuses?

Brainwashing
You ask "Anyone who has an opinion that doesn't agree with yours is brain washed ?"

For the benefit of those who enjoy the art of debate, our new friend here has employed what is known as a the 'post hoc' fallacy.

1. A occurs before B.

2. Therefore A is the cause of B.

Yes, a lot of us seem to view our common experience radically different than you do. And a lot of us have come to the conclusion that you're quite brainwashed.

But, personally, I don't think that everyone who disagrees with me about anything is brainwashed. Just people who come along spewing the same nonsensical pablum, learned from the very same wackos where I started hearing it 30 years ago and half a continent away.

And please don't take offence. I used to be brainwashed too. My dad, who was probably my biggest hero, was also brainwashed for a time. In fact, I've become friends with people in these forums who were still quite brainwashed when I met them. It does wear off if you let it.

Here's a word to the wise; because I truely care. Before you go posting as fact all over the net that you were a teenaged crack whore, if I were you I'd go and look up some friends, teachers and others who are not associated with the cult and who knew you when. You might find that your memory of events is a tad off from the recollections of others who were there. Maybe not, but most of the time those 'druggiepast' confessions are grossly exagerated or made up out of whole cloth.

Threats? What threats?
No one's made any threats to you. Ken stated that we'll be looking into this new law, it's sponsors, backers and, most importantly, it's financiers. You see, we have similar laws here in the US and on the state levels in several states. They go under the title "The Marchman Act" and "The Baker Act" I know of several families who've fought long and hard to get their kids out of one of your 'sister' programs (check the TOUGHLOVE referal brochures, their words, not mine) But the Program lawyers keep invoking the Marchman act. And, as it turns out, the primary authors, sponsors and lobbyists behind this and other coercive-gulag-friendly legislation were, indeed, Program parent group cult members. Big surprise, eh?

My question to you is this. If a 13 year old girl is in a bad situation, whether it be at the hands of a manipulative, abusive pimp, a passive aggressive mind f***ing parent or of a manipulative, abusive cult, why would you want to prevent her from getting away and possibly finding a better situation? And where do you see a need to invoke force of law against a helpless 13 year old little girl? Go pick on someone your own size for a change!
