The Troubled Teen Industry / Re: Dateline: Blind Justice

I guess it was probably more of a delayed trigger than the underlying cause. Luckily my parents let my brother come home the day he turned 18, but they were very close of going the court order route.

Watching this episode is when I started looking over the web to find out with of the programs were still operating. My brother went to Tranquility Bay, and came back a completely different person (much for the worse). He cannot speak about the atrocities that went on while he was there.

Anyways, after watching this and the public response, people really don't realize the extent of the horrors that went on at some of these programs. Sutton's actions were completely inexcusable, but when he was on the stand really stuck out to me. My brother is incapable of any emotion except anger, except when his experiences at Tranquility Bay are at the forefront of his mind (instead of being pushed to the far recesses).

I guess my question is, are there groups that are trying to make these "schools" more publicly known for the fraud that they are? The public misconception that this "spoiled adopted baby just wanted his dad's inheritance" is way off base IMO. I really feel the built up hatred and unforgiveness towards his parents for voluntarily putting him through the hell. I hope that this is an isolated incident, but I'm really worried (not just for having a brother with very similar circumstances) that it is a widespread issue that does not get enough attention.

As having an older brother who attended Tranquility Bay, I would search for other solutions that these programs. For one, they are NOT highly regulated at all. Secondly, even though TB was a level 6 program (much harsher) I've heard nothing but horror stories from kids and parents alike, as well as the financial responsibility for these programs. I would look for other options, most importantly seeking out a psychologist. That is no easy task in itself. Many times people have to go through quite a few therapy sessions with different counselors before they can find someone who they can relate to and feel comfortable being honest with themselves and their feelings.

so I think it is important to chose the words wisely...

...

Why would YOU call them survivors? You are conceding abuse went on by your very own choice of words. If it was more like a wholesome treatment program like you said... you would be called alumni and graduates and so forth.

My older brother spent his last 6 months before turning 18 in Tranquility Bay, and how dare you, Whooter, diminish his horrible experiences by your ignorant ramblings. He is not the same person in any shape or form. He's 26 years old now, and he's an alpha-male who's afraid of the dark now. You think my brother doesn't want to point out the people that abused him and make them liable for their actions? Damn right he does, but the ones doing the abuse in Jamaica weren't walking around wearing name tags so he can point them out. I'm not going to go into the abuse that he told me about because you'll just say he's a liar, but I worked with someone else who went there (the son of the bastard mom who bought into the bull shit and recommended TB to my parents) and his mentality is just as messed up from abuse that he told me about also. They must have some great brainstorming sessions in these "schools" (which you aren't allowed to talk in) to all have corroborating stories. The fact that the Kays and others profit off of the destruction of America's youth is mind-blowing, and any congressman who wants to help legislate against it is perceived as having a personal vendetta against the GOP.

On another note, I'm going to start another thread because I think my brother would do well if he was able to talk with others that had similar experiences and I had only came across this forum today. My brother is not very computer literate so he doesn't realize that there are mediums like this out there.

Whooter. Get a life.
