The Troubled Teen Industry / Calories and hunger
« on: July 31, 2007, 06:25:52 AM »
Interesting topic.  My daughter maintained her normal weight.  But, she did gripe about the food ... alot.  Of course, she is the world's fussiest eater. ::bangin::   The facility where she was employed trained chefs.  So by my standards the food was good ...

Many girls did drop some excess weight in her program but ...  in a lot of instances you saw weight loss because they didn't have access to fast food and junk food.  Junk food was a treat.  Kids today (Americans today) consume WAY too much garbage food.  Our waists certainly reflect this.

One of the very few benefits that my daughter got from being in her program was a new comfort with her own body.  Being removed from the 'hypersexual' high school environment gave her some time to learn to be OK with her healthy ... although not rail thin .... body type.

he was losing his flock to a few wolves who ran around speaking the truth

You hit the proverbial nail on the head Niles.  Scarier yet for Lon was the fact that the sheep were starting to follow the wolf around.  Sheep aren't as stupid as ya might think given exposure to a few shreds of truth.  I know ... I was a sheep.

But parents aren't interested in anything but hurting and punishing their kid in ways they cannot do at home.

Isn't that just a tad over-generalized??

Some parents really do have the best intentions when they place a kid.  We get sold a lie that we believe and then endorse.  Once the dust settles we realize ... but then it's too late.

Not all parents are evil and irresponsible.

Try to remember that.

a therapeutic curriculum designed to expose underlying issues and affect significant change in a short amount of time.

Drug and alcohol abuse
Oppositional and defiant behavior
Negative peer influences
Academic problems
Low motivation/underachieving
Depression
Unresolved trauma
Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder
Bipolar disorder
Low self-esteem
Generalized anxiety
Complicated bereavement
Personality/attachment issues

This is such bullshit.

This is quite an impressive list.  Here's what I don't get about wilderness therapy.  How can 21 days (or 6 weeks for that matter) 'cure' any of these issues?  I could pick the list apart one by one ... but I know I'm just preaching to the choir.

At least when a parent makes a placement in a TBS, there is an adequate amount of time given to perhaps unravel a few of a kids struggles.  But how on earth do parents think that 21 days can cure ADHD?  Or Bipolar Disorder.

This makes no sense to me --

I agree that it is probably a troll.  However, you'd be sadly surprised by how many parents resort to name calling. How sad is that?

The links above are good.  I might also suggest a book called  Bodily Harm:  The Breakthrough Healing Program for Self-Injurers.

The authors run an inpatient treatment facility for cutters.  I went to a symposium of theirs and it was very informative.

Treatment varies widely.  One of the most simple and yet effective methods in stopping the behavior is to place something cold on the area where a person usually cuts.  IE:  a bag of frozen peas or baggy of ice cubes.  But, real cognitive therapy is (usually) required to deal with the thoughts leading up to the actual cutting.  It is not a quick fix.

If you have any more specific questions ... list them.  I'm not an expert, but do have both professional and personal experience with cutting.

He disgusts you?  Well my first suggestion would be to adjust your own attitude.  Even if you don't say so overtly ... trust me he's getting your message loud and clear.

If you are modeling healthy living choices, then there is nothing else you can do but encourage him to do the same.  He's making his own choices and he will have to deal with the outcomes of his choices.

Not everyone has a slim and trim body type.  Deal with it.

George Foreman had 7 children -- 5 boys named George and 2 daughters, Freeda George and Georgetta.

This guy coulda/shoulda hired a name consultant.  He either has the most inflated ego ever .... or a really small pool of names from which to choose.  I'm thinking it's the former.

With schools being so damn boring what motivates kids to actually want to learn

I have thought long and hard about this statement.  I'm not sure I agree with you.  My kids went to the same school district that hubby and I attended.  I'm pretty sure that school has not changed that much.  We sat in desks.  We attended lectures.  We read from text books.  We did our homework and  jumped through the hoops.  And yet it is true that my kids were bored by the whole process.  I don't recall being bored by school.  I can't say that I relished the experience ... but bored was not a part of my vocabulary in reference to school.  In fact ... it was not really a part of my vocabulary in reference to life.

So ... I have to wonder if kids being bored by the 'traditional' educational process is more about the kids.  More specifically I wonder if the electronic era has left our kids bored with most everything.  With work ... with school ... with free time.  My kids grew up in an age where a screen entertained them ... alot.  Whether that was a video ... tv ... or computer screen.  And when it came time for them to sit down and read a text book it was admittedly ... boring.

I know this is a little off subject ... but this topic really interests me.

As far as the zero tolerance policy goes ... I have to agree with it.  The school system has become by and large a day care institution.  They have become a social work agency.  They have become sex educators.  They have become our cultures faux family.  They shouldn't become juvenile detention centers as well.

If kids want to come to school and pursue education ... great.  If they want to carry weapons, deal drugs and disrupt the educational process for others they need to go hang out on the streets.

I could never consume enough of the stuff to get a hangover.  So gross.

Best remedy for a hangover IMO is to flush your system with lots and lots of water.

I have tried emailing Jena several times.  I get no response.  I had been an active member there for over three years.

Guess I'm really banned.  I suppose it would be a waste of time to register under a new name.  I'm sure they'll compare IP addys.  Oh well.  What can ya do?
