it is?  which one is a dump?

Sorry to be Helena come lately, but Daytop in Florida BECAME Phoenix House sometime back in the late 90's.  I actually knew someone who spent time in Daytop NY as well as FL.

This person was a hardcore alcoholic, but Daytop didn't do much.  Quit the drinking for a while, but  didn't have much of a personality left over.  Throughout the years, this person ran from program to program, diagnosed with everything from ADD to an eating disorder.

Turns out my old pal is addicted to programs!

Public Sector Gulags / Crossroads Wilderness Institute

Looking for more reports - about 9:30 am, I heard a radio report that stated two kids were missing.

Fire destroys Crossroads' cafeteria

The State Fire Marshal's Office is investigating the Tuesday morning blaze. Officials at the facility reported a possible gas leak just prior to the fire.

Crews from three agencies battled a fire at Crossroads Wilderness Institute that destroyed the cafeteria building Tuesday morning.

None of the 28 juveniles staying at the moderate-risk facility for young offenders was injured.

The State Fire Marshal's Office is investigating the blaze, which started shortly after officials at the rural facility reported a possible gas leak.

The juveniles finished breakfast in the cabin-like cafeteria building Tuesday morning without any problems, said Charlotte County Fire Chief Dennis DiDio.

Shortly thereafter, some of the teens complained of burning eyes. No smoke or flames were seen, DiDio said. All staff members and juveniles left the building.

Crossroads officials called the gas company to report a possible gas leak, said Bucky McQueen, chairman of the board of directors at Crossroads, and Deputy Chief Bill Cameron.

A short time later, smoke began pouring out of the small, empty cafeteria building.

Fire crews from Charlotte and DeSoto counties joined Bayshore to battle the fire in a remote area near the Glades County line.

The cause of the fire remained undetermined Tuesday.

"Maybe somebody left something on," DiDio said.

The juveniles, between the ages of 14 and 18, will be able to stay at the 35-bed institute. The American Red Cross, along with the institute's parent company Associated Marine Institute, will build a temporary kitchen until the cafeteria can be rebuilt, McQueen said.

A staff of about 30 works at the 20-acre facility, where the state Department of Juvenile Justice sends young offenders from across South Florida. The 20-year-old Crossroads is located off Bermont Road, four miles east of State Road 31, on the large tract of land recently acquired by the state through the Babcock land deal.

I don't think I would call it bashing?  But, if you only spent a month or two in the program I don't think you were scared.  Yeah, I am fine now.  I have a good job and a 10month old son and a beautiful wife with many friends.  I am kinda of curious aboutt you though?  I see that you are the main poster on this forum and you were the first to reply to my message.  Are you ok with yourself?  I mean it seems to me that you must post on this board everyday?  Couldn't you find something better to do than bring up bad memories from the past?  Don't take this in the wrong way.  I am not trying to be mean or hurtful just curious.  I really was trying to see if I could find any old friends when I went to this fourm, but I guess after reading so much crying about how bad it was I wanted to complain like everyone else.
Later

You don't think I was scared?  Why not?  I was only 14, and if you've read my posts, you read about the nature of my incarceration.  I agree, a 4 year mindfuck is worse then a 3 month mindfuck - but it's still a mindfuck.

And actually, no, I don't post here every day, in fact I can't remember my last post.  I have lots of things to do, but right now, I just happen to be sitting at my computer, on this particular board as someone mentioned to me last evening "You should check out Joe's post"... so I did, and here I am.   I'm also a Firefox user, which means I have about 3 other windows going.  Oh, and I just talked to a friend of mine on the phone.

I also noticed your post was quite quick as well.

And again, if you've read all my posts, there's one in there about how my life has been going, however some things are different: my house is bigger, my job is busier and and my boyfriend is uh... different.  I'm not married anymore, and I consider it a blessing NOT to have children - especially by the loser I married.  Hey, we all make mistakes.

I only asked about your adjustment to the outside world since you had no childhood.  Neither did I, but I made a quick adjustment.  I ran about 10 years behind in the academic milestones department, but I have no regrets - I think I enjoyed college much more than my 18 year old counterparts :D

Mmmkay... you spend your entire adolescence cloistered in that cult, you still have nightmares after 20 years, but you bash those who spent a shorter time, but still have the same nightmares and suffered the same neglect?

You're not making a lotta sense with that one.

So did you finally become a full fledged human after LIFE?  Were you able form friendships, talk outside of group, get a job..etc etc??

The Troubled Teen Industry / More bullshit advice from ST
« on: August 16, 2006, 08:42:58 AM »
Quote from: ""Pls help""
I note a lot of strggling teens parents claim they don't trust the advice of trained local therapists. i think it is because the therapist may often advise that sending a troubled kid into isolation from their comminuty is a BAD idea!
What i dont get is that they will question this but be far more passive about the advice of an Ed con who may be getting kickbacks from a gulag in a largely unregulated industry & who has no provable independence whatsoever.
perhaps in some cases, it is not about helping the kid but letting someone else deal with a child who is a pain in the arse!

Quote from: ""Lon Woodbury's Protoge""
Actually, that's not it.  The problem with most therapists is that they lack adequate competence with the issues being presented ... period.  Certainly that is too often the case.  Session after session of "how do you feel about that", "what did you do about it", and back to "how do you feel about that" without advice doesn't help someone get a grip on today.

Have you even taken Psych 101?   The therapists JOB is to get the client to think[/i] and assess a situation, figure out how they feel about it, figure out WHY they feel a particular way, figure out what they can do about it, and how they can take steps to change it.

You know, much like TBSs claim to do... but without the degradation and prison like atmosphere.

Quote from: ""Then our expert""
It is a minority of therapists who understand the range of alternatives, including different therapeutic approaches they could take.  Those different approaches might start with involving the whole family in communication sessions - although sometimes the therapists themselves have their own communicatioin issues, so would be a poor teacher of others.

Wow, looks like we're dealing with a long time scholar here, folks...

What the hell do you think therapist spend six years studying?

Quote from: ""Expert also""
The other matter is that for a therapist to advise "sending the kid away" is tantamount to admitting they can't get important change to come about - they "failed".  So ego keeps them from recommending what can be very useful things (tho you wouldn't agree; another issue).  Of course, often they know nothing about such schools/programs anyway, so it isn't even a matter of the local therapist thinking something a bad idea so much as not even knowing.

You're not the biggest moron we've seen around here... but if you keep going with your analysis, you could be a finalist.

Sure, why not. Since that's obviously where you go to pick up guys anyway. Would be a kinda outta character for you to actually speak your mind in person though, wouldn't it?

Frod and 01 are right - this has nothing to do with the troubled teen industry, so it should be moved.  As far as you, trying to drag my private life into a public forum goes (Which begs the question, "How Big of an asshole are you?") -  "Baghead", you can stir up all the shit you want, but I'm no longer responding to it.

I know, I know.... just proves I won't stand up to you, doesn't it?

from the comment section of www.cincinnatibeacon.com

Fees at KHK are now an average of $66,000 per program stay. How is $66,000 spent? I mean, the kids come inside the cage in the AM, sit in chairs all day in the warehouse, then leave the cage, go to a stranger?s home at night, then back to the cage and warehouse the next AM. Then, on Sunday, the kids are stuck inside the stranger?s home ALL day. So, please, how is this kind of treatment worth anywhere near $66,000? It breaks down like this:

Phase 1,2 and 3- $325/day for 5 days a week.

Phase 4 and 5- $225/day for 5 days a week.

Then tack on the $50/hr charge for time spent driving clients to and from doctor?s appointments, etc?

So anyway, there you have it, ABUSE FOR PROFIT!

Hey now! What happened to "Hugs not Drugs"?   How many "hugs" does an average of $66K buy?

Well, we're making progress... only rich kids are druggies now!

While you generally have the sense not to drive a huge gas-guzzler, you still don't have what it takes to really help the environment.  You think you're "All that" just because you finished a 4-year degree.  Unwilling to take a stand on pretty much anything, you let the extremists around you decide your fate.  You're too much of a yuppie to drink beer, so you sniff the corks and swish the wine and babble snobbishly about its oakiness.  You think you're above the common man since your shit doesn't stink.

Unwilling to take a stand?  ME?

what's interesting is how someone will go back some 18 or so months to a non-financially related article and think they know it all.

Did I say I know it all?  Show me where I said that.

Yes, it's a "non-financially" related article.  It's the latest article written, aside from the one posted in this thread.  You have something more recent?  Let's have it?

Most "financial" problems come from bad decisions!!!  If you make bad decisions that negatively affect your finances, it's not a problem of not having enough money.

Come on!  Use your program awareness!  What CAUSED the financial trouble??

tell us helena, who have you talked to, when have you been over to GT yourself?  ok now you can continue to talk out the side of your neck.

Actually, I've spoken with several people.  I don't need to sit in group to see that everything adds up.  What's your point?

Oh, and here's a hint from Human Anatomy and Physiology 0001:  It's physically impossible to "talk out the side of your neck".  Even a tracheostomy is placed in the front of the neck, but you cannot "talk" from it.  An opening in the side of the neck would most certainly cause you to bleed out from severing the carotid artery.

As always, amusing to see your rosy retrospection and blind emotion guiding your interpretation of the facts.

At least someone had the balls to give some insight into the real reason GT is having "financial trouble" http://www.newtimesbpb.com/issues/2004- ... ure_1.html
