A guy i was at uni with is involved with the board of these people. i found out by mistake. They get funding from govt grants as well as benevolent donations. There are apparently a couple of wilderness type things in Australia. i am still looking at it here. It is not really an "industry" in that it is not for profit and is largely aimed at socially or economically disadvantaged kids. From what i have read so far the "progammes" similar to this mostly do not have the kids away from civilisation for more than about a week at a time. As far as i can see or am aware there is no tough love focus. I do not have first hand experience with it but my understanding from talking to my friend and reading the website info is that ;

1. Juevenile offenders or those "at risk"go and it is free
2. The kids are nominated by their social workers or schools and (i think) go voluntarily. The kid is visited at home with their family a few times for a meet and greet with the staff.
3. It is 8 days long and the kids must be over 14 and physically fit.
4. Their campsite has food waiting for them & bush showers.
5. The mission statement (if that is anything to go by of course) puts an emphasis on the kid having fun as well as learning skills.
6. Apparently the "therapudic" element is in the acticvity in itself. the kid does not confess their sins or write in diaries etc.
7. This programme is staffed by volunteers who are mainly ex cops or army guys
8. There is a positive peer culture element. My understanding is that the kid who goes back is selected by a jury of adult staff and works under supervision and direction of the adult staff.

I dont know what i think of it. From what i know of it it seems fairly above board and to have reasonably noble aims. After all i have read about its eq in the US though I would not like to see an industry that looks and feels like the "tough love" industry grow here. Was this what you were looking for or more state run hospitals etc?

Gods Politics: Why the American right gets it wrong and the left doesn't get it[/i]
Lion Hudson Plc 2005

I am not really very religious. I guess you would call me a once a year at christmas catholic. For me having a faith of any sort is really all about nobody playing any undignified Celene Dion songs at my funeral. Lets just mutter the incantations and sing the lord is my shephard and be done with it!

So I read this book because i have been quite interested in the rise of the religious right in American Politics for some time and its effect on civil liberties. I have also long taken note that the Fallwells of the world have often forgotten basic Christian concepts like social justice, forgiveness and equality.
While I did not agree with everything this man had to say, i thought it was about time that in a country where religion has a powerful social and political influence someone spoke on behalf of the religious left. Finally there is someone who is willing to point out that it was never in the bible to scapegoat single mothers or vilify gay people. This guy also attacks the Bushes "with us or against us mentality" when it comes to Iraq. Most importantly he questions how the religious right can be both pro life on abortion and pro the death penalty. This is a must read

So the other day I watched the french documentary. I had seen it before i knew anything about the industry & then forgot about it or the name of the programme it was looking at.
What really surprised me was that the guys who run WWASP are all profoundly undynamic and uncharismatic. I had initially imagined guys like Tony Robbins or Dr Phil or Bill Clinton. Lying smooth operators with a can do attitude and a charm that convinces people to do or believe anything. i figured that this was the only way people would believe that they were saving lives etc.
Instead Litchfield who is afterall the kingpin of this came across as beligerent and antisocial, Randal Hilton piggish and alarmingly stupid and Ken kay a kind of earnest but none too bright chap with a love of bad shirts.
Even allowing for the fact that the production company was French and there is no love lost between the French and America, these guys didnt exactly make it tough for them to protray them badly. only ken Kay came across as the kind of bloke that you would even wish to spend more than 3 minutes with and that is because he came across as harmless and dim.

So my question is What is the appeal? The whole point of being a cult leader is charisma. None of these guys seemed to have this. They all looked like rank amateurs. This seems to be in contrast to other programmes which have the appearance (even if it is appearance alone) of being quite professional. What do people think?

The Troubled Teen Industry / just a thought
« on: August 18, 2006, 05:14:00 AM »
One day the kids who are sent to meanspirited or abusive programmes will be middle aged. This means that their parents will be elderly. I dont know how much the standard of aged care varies in the US but I do wonder if many people have given any thought to the fact that their kids will have an opportunity to pay them back when selecting a "facility" for them in their dotage. Perhaps some entreprenerial member of the y generation will invent a BM facility for senior citizens who act out, refuse to follow the rules, experiment with sherry & arthritis pills, or dress in an inappropriate fashion while listening to billy joel and manilow. Payback can be a bitch.

Can someone explain/weigh in- is ODD:

A) a real disorder

B) a euphemism that is used when a kid is just a little shit

C) a cheap and cynical marketing tool for drug companies and the troubled teen industry to make big bicckies from kids who are having some real issues

D) any or all of the above
Discuss.

Tacitus' Realm / drug use among teens
« on: July 31, 2006, 06:29:37 AM »
i wanted to waste some time at work today so i thought i would look up some stats on bad to the bone american teenagers.
i went to the Drug Free America site hoping to be alarmed and horrified only to be really diappointed. Your kids are not that bad at all!

Last year only 6.2% of 12th graders surveyed had even tried meth. In a class of 30 kids that means only 1.86 kids. And here I thought it was a pandemic. Boy did the good people at Time magazine & Oprah hoodwink me.

As to the heroin abusing high school kids, turns out it was 2.0%. i guess wilderness therapy wont have to trouble itself with complex smack detox programmes so thats good news.

What about good old fashioned stoners? I guessed at least 1/2 of your 12th graders had done that been there. Afterall schools for the naughty & wilderness gulags do a pretty good trade from these kids dont they? Once again it was only 33%
that means in a class of 30 9.9% had gone into the loos for a quick puff!

Where are all these kids who's lives are in danger?

I tried to find the website that deals with kids who are just obnoxious and who give their families way too much lip but there is none. There are also no stats adressing the very serious issue of girls who have slutty myspace accounts. Can you believe there are also none on boys who get report cards saying that they could do better if they applied themselves more! Go figure? Someone really ought to set up some kind of foundation!

The Troubled Teen Industry / drug free america foundation
« on: July 24, 2006, 06:33:05 AM »
on some sights which criticise the staights and it spin off programmes the DRUG FREE AMERICA FOUNDATION is mentioned. Its website, however, did not look like a programme webiste as it mentioned no schools or facilities that i could see & the tips it had for parents largely seemed pretty reasonable. One of the things it emphasised was seeking help & support within the community. It also had useful tips for parents on staying in touch with their kids lives.

Does anyone know anything about this organisation?

The Troubled Teen Industry / A question for programme alumni?
« on: July 12, 2006, 09:07:48 AM »
Do you think that  the owners and senior managers of programmes are 100%cynical about it being a money making exercise? do you think they feel it helps kids, and is morally ok  or is is a little from column a a little from column b.

When I read the Guardian interview with Jay Kay, he did not really seem to hide much. Someone told me agreeed to the interview in a bid to try and capture the British market but it backfired because the angle was that the school is horrid. To be this open about the horrors of it indicates to me that you are either retarded or you feel that the world shares your view that this is a good thing for the youth under your control.

What do those with direct experience or insight think?

The Troubled Teen Industry / Can anyone give some insight?
« on: July 09, 2006, 06:07:00 AM »
While researching this industry I have noticed a couple of places like these:

http://www.2collegebound.com/

http://www.pillarsofhope.com/

What are they all about? They seem to market toward kids who have already been to behavoiural mod schools and are college age. Has anyone been? do they employ the same techniques?
I know pillars of hope is WWASP owned but the other one is owned by people called the family solutions network. These people have another school called turning winds which has one of those box ticking assesments to define how unruly your kid is.

Facility Question and Answers / What about College?
« on: June 18, 2006, 09:41:00 AM »
Many of the TBS school websites I have seen talk about kids with poor academic skills getting into good colleges as a result of the smaller classes etc. I thought that American kids had to apply directly to the university and then got assessed and either taken or declined based on what the uni thought of them.
If this is the way things are done does this mean some uni's may not go by grades alone? wouldnt being at a school designed for "troubled" kids potentially then work against a kid?
