I can only speak for myself.
I have no problem understanding how people became staff.
From where I was sitting (The Corner) it just looked like the next level up on the dichotomy.
I honestly believe that most of the staff really think they are helping these kids, just like they were helped.
There is a girl who was in the program with me, really kind girl.
She is a Director now, has been for years.
She even sent HER KIDS to Elan.
I would love to pick her brain for sure.
I don't think I would be hostile to her, because she and I were nice to each other.(rare in my lowly position)
However if one of the people who made my life hell while I was there suddenly popped up, I would be quite confrontational to say the least. Still, I can't deny that I watched this whole brainwashing thing happen to many.
I am sure there are people out there who are upset about the way I treated them while they guarded and restrained me.
We all did what we had to do to survive that hellhole.
Many did not.
The real problem that I have is that some people just will not stop playing games and it really makes them look like they are still on the payroll, punchdrunk, or both.
The Q & A is a good idea

E-mails are a bad idea because some wise guy would post them on fornits.  I am  guilty of that.  The same is applicable towards communications on facebook.

People may ask former staff, "What have you got to hide?"  My response would be, "I have done this before, other family members were affected, so no thanks.  You can thank Angela Smith from HEAL for that."  This is something I tried to move on from and it still is difficult.

If people are still persistent about this idea, then send your questions to Antigen.  She could post them on fornits for former staff to answer.   I think it would better if she moderated this discussion.

This is the most rational idea I have heard so far. This would work if we could pick a particular night that this discussion could happen for a set period of time. Just some beginning thoughts.

:timeout: Hold up, am I being drafted?

I publish my contact info liberally, but that's because I'm in the business of hosting websites. I decided a long time ago that it was worth the (sometimes considerable) risks. But I wouldn't recommend anyone else making that decision lightly, especially if you were on staff and/or a particularly hard assed oldcomer/expediter/etc. Shit, even if you weren't. I was never much of a hard ass. Rarely got called on to do a restraint. I think I actually participated in one once and just tacitly refused to actually hurt the girl. I didn't think I had made a lot of enemies but I've run into people in recent years who were really scared of me. But no one has really tried to interfere with my life except for ed-cons and program operators who have sued me or threatened to sue me.

No, I'd suggest ya'll just do what DJ and Che have done (though I think Che would agree that it wouldn't hurt to leave out the donkey fucking references) Just talk about whatever strikes you as worth discussing and try and leave the personal attacks alone.
:shamrock:  :shamrock:
Well of course your being drafted why not....lol...it's a free for all. Seriously I don't know what to say on this topic. I am doing "so so" with Elan folks. I have met many (Elan residents) in AA so the situation has been conducive to working things out, some had been in AA longer then I. I don't take for granted that folks (survivors) will accept me whether there in AA or not. I just try to make it as easy as possible for a understanding to happen.
I made a suggestion concerning staff conversing with the population but to be honest I am good going about it as I have been.

I don't think these discussion boards are the best place to "start" these communications. It probably would be better started as phone calls, e-mails or on FaceBook. One on one discussion without an attack would be a good place to begin.

Why would former staff provide his or her contact information?  This is a terrible idea considering some survivors will do whatever it takes to expose abuse at the expense of other family members.

There was a program survivor who called me in the middle of the night. "Janice" rambled on about Provo Canyon School.  She thought I was a former staff member from PCS and sounded high as a kite.  There are only three people on fornits who knew my telephone number.  She obviously got it from a fornits member.  This is one example why former staff (I worked at EYA) should never release their contact information.

Trying to diagnose myself but I have a problem, to many to choose from. I seem to be able to identify with all. I know I have "CIPD", Collective Integration Personality Disorder. I collect personality disorders and integrate them. Ya know like a goulash, everything left around the kitchen dumped into the pot with some noodles. Looks horrible but tastes great. At least that's what my mom called her Hungarian Goulash.

This sounds like tactics utilized by the NYPD IAB.

Isn't this bizarre. They were made to sit on concrete while all the other kids played. Now you know there is favoritism amongst kids especially and teachers at times. What is this THE SURVIVOR REALITY SHOW played out on a 2nd grade playground, at the end of class they vote off the weakest classmate.

Discipline policy stirs concern in Sulphur
Sulphur school’s punishment policy allowed peers to name ‘bad kids’
BY MICHAEL BAKER | Oklahoman     2 Comments Published: March 13, 2010

SULPHUR — Second-grade students were told to put the names of misbehaving classmates into a bucket. If a child’s name appeared 10 times or more, the child was kept from recess and placed in a roped-off area.

AdvertisementSchool district officials ended the disciplinary practice after parents of students at Sulphur Elementary School complained the tactic turned discipline into a popularity contest and unfairly labeled children as "bad kids.”

"I don’t really know what the school was thinking doing that,” said Amanda Jones, the mother of an 8-year-old girl. "The whole situation is ridiculous.”

The number of times a name appeared was not the only criteria used to determine who would sit out at recess, Sulphur School District Superintendent Paula Crawford said. Observations by the principal and teachers were also used, she said.

"It was just a one-time strategy that was used,” Crawford said. "It’s not going to be used again.”

The discipline strategy was discussed at the school board meeting Monday in this city of about 4,800 in southern Oklahoma. About 425 students attend Sulphur Elementary, a pre-kindergarten through second-grade school.

Jones said her daughter was the only girl to be punished. The children removed from recess had to sit on concrete in a separate area.

Missy Vandever, the mother of an 8-year-old girl in second grade, didn’t like how the method singled out children.

"They’re allowing kids that don’t even need to be in trouble, they’re allowing them to be put out for all to see,” she said.

Elementary Principal Cathryn Harmon said the school tried a different type of punishment in February but wouldn’t elaborate.

"We did try a few things the parents got upset about,” Harmon said. "They don’t have all the facts, but that’s fine.”

Crawford said after hearing the parents’ complaints, she discussed the matter with school board members.

She then put an end to the practice and spoke to several concerned parents.

"I have visited with a number of those parents, and they have been very positive visits,” she said.

"They have indicated that they feel secure that I have taken care of the situation.”

Harmon said the school will "absolutely not” try the same type of punishment again.

"The only thing I’d really like to say is that no one enjoys punishing children, ever,” Harmon said. "We just prefer it when kids make good choices.”

It’s one of the clearest examples. Substance use is strongly related to continued criminal activity in this group, and it makes sense to focus on this behavior for intervention. In fact, the study shows that treatment for substance use can reduce offending.
Levels of substance use and associated problems are very high in these young offenders.

Point 1: Drugs are illegal.  Of course if drug use goes down, crime will go down.  Drug use is a crime in itself and Illegal drug users are criminals by definition.  Does the study bother to mention which crimes?  Are they related to drugs, and how is "drug-related" defined?  Drug related often means "while under the influence of a drug".  Well.  I drink iced tea all day.  If I rob a convenience store, that's not a "caffeine related" crime.  Drugs don't do crimes.  People do crimes.

Point 2: They claim substance use is strongly related to criminal activity.  Point one applies as well, but something else worth considering is the notion that people who already commit crimes might be more likely to use drugs than those who do not break the law (and thus would not be using illegal drugs). If you're robbing convenience stores and stealing cars, you're probably not going to worry about getting busted for smoking pot.  Coincidence is not causation.  Drug use could be blamed on criminal pastimes just as easily as you could blame criminal pastimes on drugs.  I admit it could go the other way, not because of the drugs themselves, but because the action of taking drugs is a crime, and once a person thinks of himself as a criminal he's likely to commit more crimes.

Side note: Either way.  If you legalize drugs, the crime surrounding it disappear.  Drugs by themselves in society don't cause crime.  Drug Prohibition causes crime, just as alcohol prohibition created the mob.  People who smuggle drugs kill and maim and so forth because that is the nature of an illegal business.  People who use drugs regularly are excluded from legitimate jobs they could otherwise do by draconian "drug free" workplace laws.  As a result, some choose to commit crimes to support their habits.  It doesn't justify it, But it does explain it.  Excluding them from jobs on the basis of what they choose to put in their bodies, rather than their performance, is also wrong.  Drug usage, even drug abuse, does not make a person automatically immoral in other areas of their lives.  It's a choice, and like the choice of a religion, it's unjust to be prejudiced against.   Would they be criminals if society didn't treat them like it?  I don't think so.  Were drugs (even heroin) legal, pure (many poisonings are mislabeled "overdoses"), cheap, and freely available to users, I believe the worst harm surrounding drug use could be stopped. Drug use can never be eradicated.  It's a constant, illegal or not.  What we can do is get rid of the worst of the harm surrounding it.

And here's an article about legal heroin in Switzerland you might want to consider:

Psy,
In your two points I agree there is much politicizing (manipulation) going on concerning drugs and crimes. Looking at the big picture as you are I agree. But you are talking about smoking pot really as your example above. I think. Because you can't be talking about a Crack Addict, Meth Addict and other narcotic addicts. Look at your prescription drug addicts and the felonies they commit to get it. As for alcohol, try getting in the way of a Wino trying to find his first drink of the day. He would slice your throat to get it. So drugs and Alcohol do make a person "become" immoral at times.
Drugs and or Alcohol don't do crimes they sure do??? Your under the influence of a drug (lost control of mind and body). Now of course we are talking about a small % of folks who abandon (abuse) themselves with drugs and alcohol. Do you know that there are studies showing that 75% of all felonies that are committed were done by people who had drugs or alcohol in their system. Rapes in this country that are committed by men a large % were done while alcohol was in their system. This is just a fact without passing judgment. (Sorry I did not produce facts(links) to back up what I'm saying but the info is common knowledge not hard to find)

Woof, Rich is pretty cool but he's not the only staffer to hang around w/ all us splits, pull-offs n fuckups. Deprogrammed was on staff for a couple of years, I think. Don Smith too. And he initially came out as a dedicated program defender.

But more commonly, it goes like this:

John Underwood comes along to share his "insights"
viewtopic.php?f=8&t=11132&hilit=john+underwood
(or a light come down on group LOL)

Marnie Sykes posted briefly. She still insisted that the Seed had saved her brother's life, at least till he od on heroin, and then bowed out rather gracefully. Far as I know she's still working for a local print shop somewhere on the Gulf Coast.

Those are just a couple I know of from the Seed/Straight line. I'm sure there are others. Then there's Dysfunction Junction and Che from other programs. Never mind the Elan people! LOL They're too hard to figure out sometimes.
:shamrock:  :shamrock:
Jeesh Ginger if you called Woof as much as you called some Elan people he would also know your a bit skewed....lol. You just leave some of us Elan folks alone, trust me Woof a Doof knows some of us well enough.
Now concerning a conversation with survivors and ex-staff with the conversation being entirely focused on the interactions between them. I have not specifically encountered that with a survivor I staffed. My experience has been with survivors I have met on line here and out in public over the years. Most cases have been ok at first awkward then after some conversation good. In person the encounters have been better then the encounters on line. Which I think makes sense for obvious reasons.
