I just wonder if the government is going to pull something really big like "The Seed" again. Count me out. If George Bush Sr. endoresed Straight Inc. Only the people in government know where they are going to try to pick up the pieces again. All the Dundedin click is blown away. I've no part in them.

Yes, I do remember him - very kind and very musically talented.  I got married and moved to California in '75 so I lost track of the many I would have liked to stay in touch with.  But now, with the www, we can re-connect, right?  Are you in touch w/ him?

Anybody heard from Chuck H***** or Sue H******?I heard Sue came down with bone marrow cancer and haven't heard a word. I also heard Chuck did a turnaround and went straight. I saw him in a bar and he had a scar vertically on his wrist. When I asked him what had happened he said he'd tell me......but not in  here(the bar). I do think he was the only one from the Dunedin click that I cared for. I just never saw him again and wonder if anybody knows where I can find him? :smokin:

Being sleepy can impair someone's ability to do thier job.  People
can sleep at home and come to the job with sleepiness still in their system. The sleepiness can still be there long after the employee has slept. When someone is found to be sleepy on the job, they can claim that they went to sleep the night before.  The only solution to this problem is to ban employees from sleeping.

Hey Robin -
Chris Lewis, I was 15 yo when I went in, must have been 73' went home in 42 days, graduated the program the following year & stayed active with the program until it closed. For whatever reason I never thought about getting involved with Straight. I knew a number of people who did, I used to run around with Dave Crock some, he married a girl that I knew & grew up with from grade school to high school. I graduated from SPCHS in 75'there were only three seedlings there at the time, me, Dave B*** & Maggie C***d, she left the next year (Lakewood) and Dave & I wound up being the only ones there at the school. Did 2 years at "5 avenue U" & moved on to finish college in Atlanta in 1977. Married a seed graduate that I had dated all through the high school (after graduating the program of course) but we divorced three years later. We both changed alot in our early to mid twenties and she wanted different things. Never really came back to St Pete except to visit the folks or my brothers / nepehws / neices. Lost my Mom in early 2004 & my 4th oldest brother in the fall (he was only 60 yo died of a brain tumor) so other than the people I still stay in somewhat contact with thru the classmates site or when I visit this is one way I can "re-connect" with my past, childhood & some of the most influential things that helped make me the person I am. I managed to stay straight & sober till college, 21 & then I went on to do more "research" on alcohol, drugs & addiction. Fortunately my older brother brought me to an AA meeting, that was almost 14 years ago (this Sept 6th) and by the grace of God, the fellowship of good people & re-working the program (alot harder on your own) I have managed to stay sober, one day at a time. I enjoy everyone's contributions, & I Love You Guys!

Chris

Boy that name sounds familiar, I think back and it amazes me how many people, sweet, warm, funny, honest, grateful real people that I did know! But so many only by their first names!!! In some respects that made it so hard to connect with people after I graduated the program.  Speaking of pictures I have quite a few pictures of a number of Oltimer parties, Birthdays, Anniversaries & the like. Dare I post some of these? I know I don't look much like that young blond haired teen with the avaitor glasses anymore, boy were we young or what!!! Does anyone know what happened to Max H... or Ken...(sp) or Dana ...., At what time they all lived in an apartment right accross the street from Bayfront Medical (hospital) but the last time I came to town I think the house had been torn down & it was a medical office. I have alot of warm memories of those times and alot of gratitude for a program that in all likehood saved my life at that time (with no exageration) I know I was one of those "at risk" kids with an extreme personality trait and based on the experimentation that I had done by the time I was 15 I very well may not have made it into my 20's. After all the initial "crap" I felt when I first went into the program I very distinctly remember feeling relieved.

I am one of the other 2 folks from St. Pete Catholic after Chris, Dave and Maggie, 74-75.  The only other one was a gal named Cynthia and she and spent many months together on the front row.  It was a small high school and amazingly there were only 5 of us.  Never went back though after I finished with the program, ended graduating from Dixie.

Hey Chris how you doing?   Good to see you again.

I traveled w/ several close friends and a few acquaintances during the years I was involved in the Seed and would love to hear from anyone who knew me.

After graduation, I lived w/ four other girls; Julie B (I know she got married to Jeff B), Mary C (I worked w/ her dad at a '5 & Dime' store in St Pete), Rheda (sp) and Jane(?).  We hung out w/ the guys in the St Pete house; brothers Bob and Mike R, Dan H (who is no longer w/ us), Ken H, Dana D, Doug S, and others I can't seem to place at the moment.

I remember those times sitting on the 'guys' St Pete house roof, watching the cops run the red lights and stop signs and thinking what a bunch of trite hypocrites they were. I also remember contemplating our existence.  Remember the movies "Jonathan Livingston Seagull" and
"Siddhartha"? Those were the movies at the time.  Made ALL OF US wonder...and question.

We were growing up and - as adolescense gives way to adulthood - showed interest in a cult of a different color; "The Holy Order of Mans",  conveniently located not far from the 'guys' house. Well, as we went about exploring our adulthood, the interest in that cult diminished and we all moved on.

I remained in contact w/ a few for a while (gave my cat, Sunny, to Dana when I moved to CA) and lost touch w/ others.  I was probably considered an outcast because I had *GASP* a relationship that did not receive the Seeds' blessings.  Nor did I continue to hang around - I needed to explore what I had missed (during my drug use and time served at the Seed). I was growing up and needed to make my own decisions w/o help of the Seed or others.  I felt guilty at first, but not for long.  I stumbled and grew as any other human being might encounter while growing up.

And, to tell you the truth, it hasn't been that bad...I stagger onward, rejoicing!!  It's all good.

Let me hear from you!!

That was the same group of guys I hung with too, I remember Mary C, & I have recently been in touch with Julie B, she is on the Bogie web site. I dropped her an e-mail note an dammned if she remembered who I was! I remember around that time the Van Ausdale(sp) sisters were hanging out & I think one was dating one of the guys in the house. That "cult" was the "Church of the Living God" and I attended a few of the meetings with Dana & Ken. Heavy into "spirituality" and "auras" and "astral planes" as I recall. It was all just the positive energy that surrounded all of us at the time. Dan Hubbel I had not thought of that in years, what a trajedy! At the time I was dating Jan M...... who was getting "tutored" (she was a senior)in school by Ken H..... I used to go shooting with Doug S.... & Chris P.... we were all into guns at the time. I remember Dana D... dated a girl named Karen .... they were very serious for a while. The movie I seem to remember at the time that all the Seed kids were fruit about was "Billy Jack" because of the group- school setting & the supposed paralells to the program, & of course the "fantasy" of having some karate-man who could kick the townie / druggees asses defending us "seedlings"!!!

Sounds like our tracks were similar never moved back to St Pete but visited family several times a year. In July I have a 30 year high school reunion that I am going to & I have been in contact with a few people to visit with while I am there. Do you remember a Max H.... he was into photography & liked to smoke a pipe (I think he thought it made him look "mature")and there was a guy named "Hap" (I think a nick-name) big tall good looking guy who drove a truck and there was a  Jenny B... who was a graduate she had a brother who was a court-order but stayed such a hard-ass they booted him out of the program. They lived out on Madeira beach area. Your right it was great times to be straight & sober and to be "growing up". I see alot of the things that my kids are having to contend with and I can't help feeling that I was really lucky in many ways. Great "Shout Out" right back at you!! Love you guys!

I have been reading at this site for a couple of years, I don't know Greg but went to school with his lovely sister Frieda at Lakewood and my brother and Iwere Seedlings in 74.  I was there for about 8 months because Arthur was constantly on my case and I was terrified of being started over.  Anyone know what happened to him?  He was a scary MF. My brother and I are fine, successful people (as we were before going to the Seed). Thanks for keeping up the site, I lost almost a year of my life and have blocked out alot of it but you are keeping it real...lot's of love

Does anyone remember a girl from St. Pete named Bridgette (sp?)? I met her while she was in Ft Lauderdale, had to be spring or early summer of 1973 because I remember making her acquaintance when we sitting back a few rows. She was from somewhere around the St Pete area  - she referred to it is as "the home of the newly wed and nearly dead."

I think she had dark brown curly hair and freckles, lots of freckles. Real nice girl.  Besides my hometown seed friends, she is probably the only person whose name and face I can recall.  Just wondered what happened to her.

Hey Stripe - thank you for posting the pics and articles in the other forum!  My oldcomer's name was Bridget and seems to fit your profile.  She was a true "southern girl" and a beautiful person. Are you saying she started the program in Ft.L?  I know she worked the program and graduated from St. Pete.  If she's one and the same, she married (a non-seedling) shortly after graduation and I hear, is still happily married to the same guy...

BTW Shelly, you were in the Seed in 73/74.  Do you remember my step sister Shirley...married John L?

Stripe, I do remember a bridgett but I can't place the face right now.

Shelly....part of the ole Lakewood early clan!

What is your opinion of your time there?
I love to here from Lakewood High Kids, especially since my entire life turned upside down and I had to run for it while at lakewood, never to return.

I made a class of 77 reunion a few years back and saw some kids that were in the Seed with us...Rick B...Speedy B....and a few others.

once again...GOOD TO HEAR FROM YOU. I am disapointed you don't remember me. If you have an old annual, look me up.

Don't know what happened to Arthur, but does anyone remember Arthur sometime in 74 / 75 having to use a cane? I never really knew if he injured himself or had phlebitus(sp) but I remember for a good period of time he was really limping around. The visual is almost a dopleganger of Sam Jackson as the "glass man" in M Night Shamylan's movie "Unbreakable". He was quite intimidating with his physical presence, but he was actually one of the nicest staff members there was and he was very sentimental.

Arthur was senior staff in St Pete. One day he disappeared and we heard he was back working in Lauderdale.

several months later he came back for our christmas party and served us food.  That was the last I ever heard of him

One of you longtimers let us know what happened to him please.

Hello Robin,
I have found this sight from our mutual friend. I've been reading some of the posts from different parts, and does it bring back memories. There are still a lot of former "seed" adults living here in St.Pete. I still have the seed t-shirt, believe it or not. One thing I will say about the seed is, I did get off of the dope and drink, yet I had a lot of emotional issues after that. Especially fear. I remember as if it were yesterday, raising my hand to talk, but I always hid behind someone because I really didn't want to talk. Then there was a time an old boyfriend of mine came in just to get me out. He was being "full of sh**", and some girls started pointing to me that I knew him. Arthur made me stand up and "tell him where he was at." I told him, but whispered to him I didn't mean it.
School was another trip. I went to Bogie, and I remember saying " I can't talk to you, and I love you." I got kicked, punched, and things thrown at me everyday in classes and the hallways.
I know when the seed closed and Art ran with a lot of money, the Semblers asked even my parents if they wanted to help them start Straight.Thank God they declined. Rumor was that Art and his wife were confronted by some of the staff, whom he fired. Some parents who gave money also confronted him, and he ran. What would have happened to any of us if we tried to run??? I had a newcommer who tried to run one night as we were heading for the car, and I took off running after her, grabbed her long hair and threw here to the ground. I'd say that was battery today. I'm done for now. I am glad I found this site. I see some people still haven't gotten over their experience of the seed, and are very angry peeps. That time was way in the past. We can't chance the past, yet we can change today, and every day. Take care. J

Hey,
I remember Arthur very well. He hurt his leg in a car accident. I was in that clinic with him when he was on bedrest. I heard a long time ago that Arthur died. A guy I know was staff in 73 told me that. I really liked Arthur. I spent a lot of time with him in the clinic, after I came back from being home for a month when I had mono, the flu, and a kidney infection. Do you remember Mary Chapin? She to died in a severe car accident a few years back. Her memorial service was flowing with people outside the chapel, and very beautiful. It was so sad having to see the family, and give my condolences.

Welcome Jalong!

I was there with you and am happy you are here.

As far as Some people not being over their seed experience..a couple things.

First, some were way over it but are confronting issues they buried. It is not unusual, kind of like self therapy, when you revisit old baggage to feel some emotions...anger, pain, regret.  It doesn't mean these people have been living for 30 years in anger over this.

The anger will pass and with it usually comes more understanding. It is a positive process I believe.

Oters Jalong, believe it or not, were involved until recently. These people have immediate issues...very different than those of us 15 or 16 years old. These people stayed involved until they were 40!

Since you are here, tell us something you remember about your time there.  For instance, were you there when we would get the protesters and we would have to go outside during exercise time in front of them and do the hokey-pokey...just for additional humiliation?

I don't remember Shirley but I certainly remember Frieda.  I remember geting stood up, always by Arthur, and being freaking so scared he could "see: into my head.  It was during the gas shortage and when I was an oldcomer I would have to get up really early, like 5am, to get in line for gas, take my newcomers to the Seed (on the other side of town) and get to Lakewood on time.  I remember getting slammed into my lockers at school because I couldn't talk to my old friends and despartely wanting to hand them a note telling them to leave me alone until I got out of the program but not doing it because I was too scared of starting over.  I remember Frieda having a very hard time.  Arthur was all over my shit and seemed to pick on me relentlessly.  Glad you  guys are here.

Hello Greg,
I was in the seed in 73 for 10 1/2 months. My parents had one of those phoney court orders that judge was handing out like candy. I was considered a "buster", so I got a lot of "buster" newcomers. By the way, I am Julie B. Yes, I was married to Jeff B. I have already mentioned some of the seed kids who have died, but I forgot one very dear friend of mine, Steve Cason. Remember him? He died from a massive heart attack.
As far as the seed was concerned, yes, it saved my life. Almost all of my old friends who I hung with are dead, and who use to gather at the parking lot to the left yelling my name out. It got so bad staff made me stay inside during exercises. I didn't even know who Julie was before I went in there. I came out with a small amount of who I was, but I was so full of fear in there and when I got out, it was too overwhelming. I just stuffed it for years, and hung at the guys house. There I felt I could be myself, and also felt very loved. I hated the seed with a passion for years, yet once I grew up a little more I realized I was no longer a druggie, or a drunk. Now I definatly know who I am, and have for many years. I did have to go to counseling, and thank God she knew all about the seed and the way they tore us all down, and then built back up the same way. I walked around school, and outside like a darn robot, until I finally just stopped going to old timer meetings. Of course I was "screwing up" as far as others thought. But that's one part of me I never lost. I never cared what others thought about me. God and I knew what I was doing. I also never lost my faith and spirituality. I feel very happy with my life now. I have been through a lot in my life, yet I look at them as stepping stones. Each trial I go through makes me stronger and closer to my God. I found it funny that the seed had only 10 steps. The ones that were left out were all about finding a higher power, and living a spiritual life. Well I live my life that way now. I'll continue another time. Take care till then. Greg, remind me who you are OK? Thanks,Julie

Yes, my sister did have a very hard time.

One of the hard things was the wedge that was driven between us.  I hardly saw her during the seed except when they stood her up to humiliate her or vise versa. At home we were scared to talk every word was scrutinized and you didn't even know if you could trust your own family members. At 16 I had to get out of St pete or be thrown back in, and then  It took my sister and I years to recover our relationship.  Our family never really did recover from this fully.

For some reason Shelly I remember details about everybody including you. If I close my eyes I can see a 16 year old Shelly Gillette with a pretty smile and long blonde hair.

Yes, the kids at lakewood were anything but nice to us seed kids. They taunted us, called us names, the girls would teasingly flirt with me just to arise a reaction...the boys would try to fight or as you said, throw you against the locker. All the while I was petrified that Someone would (and often did) go back to staff and tell on me for some percieved anti-seedling action.  It was absolute terror and hell for me. The seedling table in the lunchroom was our only santuary where no one would mess with us.

If you want to talk to me, you can over on the left hit private messages and then leave one for Gregfl, or you can email me at [email protected].

Bennet Beverly died also, killed himself.

Dave leverone, drug overdose.

Julie, welcome!  What school did you go to?

Good morning Greg,
I went to Bogie. I had dropped out in 10th grade, and then during the seed I went back to finish high school. It was amazing how even some teachers hated seed kids. I had a history teacher who kept giving me f's all the time, even though I knew the work. I got A's and B's in all my other classes. A lot of my old friends still were in school, or they would be waiting for me when I drove into the parking lot. I'd get surrounded at times, and man was I scared. I held my ground though, and in time they left me alone. My sister Kathy had to come in or I "wouldn't ever be able to go home." She tried weed 1 time. The seed really messed her up, and also my younger sister. My younger sister lost most of her friends, and of course she felt as if all the attention went to me. She was only 12 at the time.
I remember one time coming home from the seed with 3 newcomers in the car, and my old friends had the road blocked with 3 cars. I went up into peoples yards just to get into our driveway and run into the house. The next morning, my parents whole garage door was full of Seed Sucks stickers. Those were the days of the great seed. Not!! Talk to you soon,
Julie

Julie, do (did?) you have red hair?

My sister remembers you.

Also, you said your parents did not help start straight, Inc.

Recognize their name here? This list includes those on the original and subsequent boards of straight, Inc.

Hello Greg,
I read the list, and I recognize so many names on there. The most surprising one is my ex's father, Ray Bourgholtzer. He has been a thorn in my side for too many years. Mainly because I had my 3rd child in 1990 when I was still Bourgholtzer, and I gave her that last name. He wants me to change it, and I said I would if he's going to pay for it. I'll talk to you soon.
God Bless,
Julie

Julie, some of the court orders were phony...and the judge you are speaking of (there were several that had their own kids in the seed...cavanaugh was one) would sentence kids to the seed for even truancy or shoplifting.  I had a st pete judge LIE about me being in court and admitting to drug use...squelching a Ft Lauderdale judge's order to remove me from the seed. IT NEVER HAPPENED.

Of course we were in the real seed, that post was an erroneous idea from someone who came along when long after the st pete seed closed down.

My sister's name was previously posted here...she may post a response here in the next several days and you can ask her.

All those starters of The Straight Inc...(including my father)  were seed parents and the original staff were seedlings from Lakewood.  All of them were from our time...it is unfortunately our legacy...our seed branch and our parents spawned one of the most abusive rehabs in the history of the industry...all based on The Seed's techniques.

Nice, eh?

Judge Harry Fogle??? He was a bad guy???  Iwas an open heart RN at All Childrens for years and he was one of my patients...and I was just scared cause he was a judge.  Bennett beverly did jump from the Skyway, He was a very shy, sweet, quiet guy. No 3oth reunion from Lakewood this year, kinda weird, "Dude, we forgot our reunion".  I had newcomers when the gas shortage was on and had to get up around4:30am, get in the gas line at the gas station, take them to the Seed (way across town) and then be at school on time.  The earliest Seedlings I knew were from very affluent families in the "pink streets" and it was almost like they were one uping each other by putting their kids in...the Seed Country Club, instead of being an involved parent who took time to help their children, they wanted someone else to do it and besides, everyone else they knew at all their cocktail parties had their kids there and they LOVED it.

Those three judges routinely sentenced kids to the seed.

Shelly, you nailed it on the country club deal. My father was always a wanna be and he always talked about the ¨doctors, lawyers and judges¨who had kids in the seed like that somehow legitimized it. It was so cultish and these parents would visciously attack anyone that questioned the seed. They also turned over all household chores to their little compliant seedlings, and if you didn´t for instance clean the kitchen at home you were in trouble at the seed.

When I went in, my parents were going to put me in for "a bad attitude", which was ok with the seed as long as you put up your money.  My brother had used a lot of drugs but I had only smoked pot.  When I went in for the initial interview (with Arthur)I told him I had smoked pot and viola, I was in.  Arthur scared the crap out of me with his bad ass Samuel L Jackson Pulp Fiction behavior.  He was the only one that stood me up to harrass me but I also had the feeling that he liked me because I was a cute blond girl, it was weird.  I have to admit though, he could be very funny and told the wildest stories of any staff there.  My brother ended getting out in record time and I stayed in for an extra 2 months.  I also remember the 'seedling haircut" for girls that we would do for newcomers--the shag was cool and we would bend over, put al our hair in a ponytail on top of our heads and cut it all off at an angle, instant shag, no more druggie long hair with center part.

I have my own business and travel extensively. I love Medellin ´the city of eternal spring´.  It is also cool being in a country at war...but cool in an interesting way.

Today my girlfriend and I went to the movies, the mall, and maybe now the gym. The weather is 78 degrees and dry, the eleveation 5000 ft situated in a beautiful valley and The food is good, the people nice, and the women beautiful.

Like I said...the good life!
