The Troubled Teen Industry / Re: Diamond Ranch Academy

I find this extremely hard to believe. Are these REAL athletes on DRA's teams or are they just having local teens posing along with the "higher level" students to lie to parents and their children?

They also claim to have a good athletic program with a no-cut policy with the full package of a college prep boarding school.
Their athletic website http://www.diamondranchacademy.com/athletics/ makes this look very real.
IT just makes me sick that they CAN EVEN LIE about enjoyable activities that come to interest many teenagers. ::puke::

Peninsula Village used actors for their pictures and videos.  PV's website used similar photographs of happy, smiling children and parents participating together in what appeared to be therapeutic situations. PV relied heavily on fraudulent advertising and I don't doubt for a minute that Diamond Ranch Academy does as well. Programs lie...they lie right to your face, and it doesn't matter if you are a parent or a patient.

I don't know what is up with UHS, but I don't recall having a high opinion of many of their operations when I dropped out more than a year ago.
See:

So....UHS probably searched for Adam McLain to run one of their programs. I didn't get an exorcism, but I did get a AVMcF*ck style interrogation in a 8X8 room in the PV admin building one August afternoon. Adam turned on the heat, brought about ten ripe staff members into the room and demanded that I "get on board with the program, or ELSE."

Does WATE know or care what actually happens there?

They should certainly know. The WATE forum had a thread on PV and quite a few former patients posted there. I think they did away with the forum recently though.
They might care if they knew the truth...my guess is they get the routine treatment any outsider receives-by invitation and scheduled weeks in advance only. Some people call it a dog and pony show.

Interesting story ... with new statistics.

Looks like the Village is back to their old tricks since they are no longer an embarrassment to locally owned Covenant Health. WATE still seems more than willing to help spin PR for the Village staff.

The  psychiatric facility the shooter was committed to in February has not been named in the local news. Although Parkwest sold Peninsula Village last November they still own Peninsula Hospital across the street. To my knowledge, it is the only local facility he could have been committed to.
Taking a risk here, but after my experience with Peninsula Village, NOTHING that goes on in ANY Covenant Health Concern surprises me. That includes implanting a tracking chip during an appendectomy...

Covenant no longer owns PV, but I got a smirk out of this blurb in the metro rag. The "Empire" loves to boast about acquisitions, but kept mum about the reasons for the sale of Peninsula Village. Locals still have no idea about the atrocities committed at Peninsula Village while it was owned and operated by Covenant Health.
I was not aware Covenant is also known as "the Empire". I have only heard it referred to locally as "the Coven". I was also not aware that Peninsula Behavioral Health had changed it's name to Peninsula Hospital for the mentally ill...

    Convenant Health to Expand?
    Metro Pulse
    Wednesday, March 10, 2010

Covenant Health, aka the Empire, is in a strong position in the Knoxville medical community. The merger of St. Mary’s with Baptist into Mercy will take some time to shake itself out and recover from the financial costs involved. They will be preoccupied for some time with getting on a strong financial footing. Covenant’s latest expansion plan is an attempt to acquire Morristown-Hamblen Healthcare System, a non-profit hospital in Morristown. Covenant is competing with a for-profit company that owns a competing hospital, Lakeway Regional. Covenant is emphasizing its non-profit status with the board of the ailing hospital.

Covenant owns Fort Sanders, Fort Sanders West, Methodist Medical Center, Fort Loudoun, LeConte Medical, Roane Medical Center and Peninsula Hospital for the mentally ill[/i]. They also operate several outpatient clinics.

Sounds all to bizarre to me.. why would anyone want to consult a shrink on the internet? Seems to me half of what a shrink does is reading body language. How can you determine what is up if you can't pull that off?
It is bizarre Che...I am still trying to fathom the world of PV. Three years later bizarre only scratches the surface...the two smiling faces offering cyber therapy impressed me as the "pull it off" first, determine what is up later(or not) types.

Thanks for the input Che...It was late when I posted this. It is not rich at all, it is deeply disturbing. These two former  "family therapists"  seemed perfectly at ease during Adam McLain's Reign of Fear at Peninsula Village (from 2003 fresh out of his internship until his termination in 2007). If Mr. Redfield and Ms. Lohr are not able to determine "reportability" on simple subject matter as required by the law of the state of Tennessee, are they really able to offer virtual solutions for real world problems?

The following was written with Peninsula Village in Blount County TN in mind, however the fundamentals of this post apply to ALL troubled teen programs.

I think there should be a thread for people (parent's and alumni) to speak regarding the dosage and frequency of medications. I recall some VERY shady medication issues when I was a patient. Obscenely high dose, changing meds every week or so, etc. My issue is that rapid change of psychiatric medications, esp in adolescents, can cause real damage....in addition to being non-effective in treating the symptoms that are causing the primary behavioral health concern. In order to accurately report, anyone that has obtained their treatment records from PV can simply look at the medication logs. Recounting of what was seen from parent and client perspective would be useful as well.

I recall hearing someone state that PV had them on 120 mg of Abilify per day, and I seem to recall hearing about 800+ mg of Seroquel. This correlates to the time period in which parents have reported rapid or extreme weight gain in their kids. Both of these meds are known to have significant side effects if over prescribed. Hell, the biggest red flag of anti-psychotic over prescription is weight gain.

As a point of reference for the previously mentioned medications. 800+ mg of seroquel is approved for the treatment of highly psychotic schizophrenic or (in rare cases schizo affective) ADULT patient. I don't think 120 mg Abilify is approved in any population. Adolescents do not metabolize the same way that adults do, and thus have far different needs in regards to therapeutic medication doses.

Anyway, you get the point. Thanks in advance.

P.S. If you are the parent of a child that is being prescribed psych meds, PLEASE do some research on the history and side effects of the med in question. Being an informed parent is the first step in being a responsible parent. Don't take it on faith that "the doctor knows best". It is also a good idea to know what psychiatric terms such as "schizoid, psychotic, disorder, therapeutic, etc" really mean. Many times these terms are used improperly, or for effect. The end result of this is that misinformed parents are frightened or bullied such that they give in to the demands or recommendations of less than ethical "professional" staff. If you want what is best for your child, you need to understand the most basic aspects of adolescent psychiatry.

This is a really good thread, thanks for starting it.

I agree with Che. Thanks for starting this thread. The most logical, coherent and considerate posts on Fornits and on other forums are written by people who didn't work the Peninsula Village program...

Peninsula Village / Re: Getting Records From PV - URGENT
    « on: September 02, 2009, 10:50:29 AM »
My first request for records was denied using the catch all term of "clinical necessity" as the reason. The family therapist told me it was because treatment team was afraid I would "use them against the program in a slanderous way". Hmmm...
When my daughter turned 18 she made another request for the records and was able to get them for just under $200.00.
As xEnderx stated, there are copious notes. Incidents are documented by several different people, and I was startled by the number of conflicting accounts.
